Just trying to get some opinions about local golf courses. Probably more with next year in mind now but what are people’s opinions on the best local courses besides the 3 great courses in Lytham which are all ridiculously expensive and one is virtually a closed shop anyway !!!

Best of the rest ???....

All depends whether you like to play links or parkland courses.
Parkland....
For the money they've spent on it Green Drive its very expensive seeing as it's only oper 7/8 months of the year.
Staining is a farmers field with some golf holes on it, as it matures it may get better.
Blackpool park (Stanley park) the only municipal golf course on the fylde that gives starters and casual golfer the chance to play at an affordable price.
Only problem, the clowncil are hell bent on taking it away from the Blackpool public 🤷‍♂️
Fairhaven, cost brewsters and long waiting list. Lovely course.
Poulton, 9 holer. Not played it for 30 years so don't really know what it's like nowadays.

Links......

Royal, great if you are a business man with loads of cash who is not interested in playing competition golf. If you join never leave as you'll never be able to rejoin!!
St Anne's Old links, (royal lytham wannabees) big fees long waiting list, far too penal for your average club golfer (quote members)
Fleetwood, for some reason very difficult for long standing members to book times. If you're a junior or new member though it's not a problem. Decent course.
North Shore, the only true links in Blackpool as they like to advertise themselves. The most pointless course on the fylde and have had somewhat of an exodus of players recently. Big open field where you can blast it anywhere.

Links/parkland

Knott end. Lovely course but out at the back of beyond, have heard they're experiencing financial difficulties at moment.

American holiday type.

Herons reach (de vere) Great if you want to talk about how big your house is, how fast and expensive your car is or how well your business is doing. No clubhouse and you'll have to fit in around the hotel guests if you want to play at the weekend.

That’s a comprehensive round up !!!!
Pretty much tally’s up with my research too.
I’m puzzled as to why long standing members would find it more difficult than others to book at Fleetwood??? Is it not just one system for all ???
My absolute preference would be Old Links and apparently vacancies always open up after Christmas but at £1800 joining fee it’s probably not happening. Herons Reach might be the realistic option.

As Wizzer says the biggest tragedy of local golf is what’s potentially going to happen to Blackpool Park, disgraceful really👎

Suggest you get your facts right before spouting on , Knott End golf club are most definately NOT experiencing financial difficulties , Fact .

When you weigh it up, all golf clubs pander to the season ticket holders, and the casual, pay on the day player is left behind. Small club mentality...

I'm ever so sorry but talking to the handicap team (the night France beat Germany in the euro's) they were saying they had.
Apologies if you've been offended

Calm down... he only said he’d heard that they were struggling.. I heard North Shore was struggling big time and they were close to being in trouble. ??? The pro left and members have left en masse.

Fleetwood is the best course around here and value for money, that's why there's a waiting list to get in and just to add, members don't have any problems getting a game easy as pye
3 years ago a mate of mine just turned up and joined on the spot. I reckon the pandemic has caused a spike in interest which is great. I’m on the waiting list there as it happens !!!

Again, talking to several Fleetwood members they were saying when the times become live they were having difficulty getting a time and it seemed like new members were getting the time as well as the 20 yo to 30 yo age group.

Again sorry, don't shoot the messenger I'm only trying to help 🤦‍♂️

I see what he did there but it doesn't work in the changing times.

Many courses don't have the massive waiting lists they previously had and are unable to enjoy the benefits and are actually struggling.
Four Fylde Coast courses have waiting lists currently. Two of those at least didn’t two years ago. It surprised me tbf.

I used to enjoy Garstang. Been years since I've played any, but now I'm middle aged and play more, I'll be thinking about the odd pay & play when i'm in the Gold Coast.

Critch

I have no reason to doubt that's the case.

Generally speaking, courses are struggling and many that used to have waiting lists and required £1,000 down and asked for £1,000 a year and for you to be proposed and seconded and have 37 references after you'd passed their interview now just require you to have a set of clubs and pay your annual fees and you can tee it up the next day.

I ran the chap aboves description of all the local courses past my brother who plays at all courses and he agrees with them but thinks Fairhaven is more a Royal Lytham wannabees than the Old Links.

Staining, Poulton (9 holes), Blackpool Park and Garstang are our favourite local courses.

Green Park was nice when we played there a couple of years ago.

I have not played at Fleetwood for years but I plan on going there soon.

If you want to travel further afield Kirkby Lonsdale are doing a decent autumn/winter deal
I’ve heard a rumour the plan to build on it has been ditched as they’ve no money to go ahead
I suggest you do your research before spouting off!! (See what I did there🤣)
The situation is up in the air at the moment CCW.
The clowncil have pretty much backed themselves into a corner over it and the company who want to develop the course from holes 3 through 9 haven't got a pot to piss in!!

As has been said elsewhere, golf is having a bit of a resurgence and with the Park being the only municipal weve seen more people playing than in the last three seasons.
I personally dont think that the park could generate the profits that the course made in the late 70's and 80's but run properly it would give a chance to beginners or others that are thinking of getting back into the game an affordable option and would still make money for the town.

The most worrying thing for me is if they give planning to this company, the development falls through and it ends up as yet ANOTHER carpark in the town.
There seems very little thought to any process that the council make, which I believe is very concerning for the Blackpool public.

Old Links and Fairhaven still want a ridiculous fee up front. They haven’t backed down on it and they’re full right now. Fairhaven is as snooty a club as I’ve ever been to !!!! I agree with you though, at most places it’s pay and straight in. I live half a mile from Old Links but the price is ridiculous. I’ll probably hold out for Fleetwood and be prepared for the trek up the prom. In the meantime you can get a points based membership at Herons Reach which will do until next year.

I hate Staining, it’s a farmers field not a golf course. Green Drive just feels very small somehow and a bit boring. I do like Garstang and Blackpool Park it it was looked after by people who cared would be fantastic.

It’s very concerning. People need to fight for it

Yes, sorry Critch, I was just generalising and don't doubt what you were saying about waiting lists at certain courses.

No. I get that... The biggest issue I have is how bad some golf clubs are at communicating. It took a month to get a reply from one club, 2 weeks for another. 1 didn’t even bother!!!
Fleetwood to be fair, replied in 10 minutes!!!

I think the lockdown has led to a resurgence, plus with Golf England now doing a £40 nomad full handicap online, with insurance included, it's possible to get a CDH number and be able to compete in comps without being attached to a club. For those of us who have a season ticket and want to go to all Saturday games, it makes playing different courses regularly a far more attractive proposition.

I didn’t realise that tbf !!

Apart from the 3rd, 4th, 8th, 9th, 12th, 13th, and 16th. A pretty disingenuous summary of a track which is a pretty good test of golf and invariably in good condition.

Your assessment of Staining is also completely unfair and is a fun 18 holes for casual golfers.

The rest fair enough.

Poulton, 9 holer. Not played it for 30 years so don't really know what it's like nowadays.
Last time I had the misfortune to play it, fairways were atrocious, greens were good though, bitten crazy by horseflies, loudmouth overweight baldies giving it big time outside shop. Vowed 'never again'.

I don’t like it either. 9 holes is Mickey Mouse tbf. Unless it’s top quality.. which it isn’t

People make me laugh when they say North Shore is just a big field and too easy. Most of them haven't ever played it 🤣

It's a very challenging golf course and in top condition for most of the year.

With the new handicap system. I get an additional 2 shots when playing North Shore. It can't be that easy.

You're right, I've never played it🤦‍♂️
Edit to add, apologies to all north shore golfers, it's the best and hardest course on the fylde.
CCW that's the one 👍🏻

Can't add much to the above, some very good summaries.

I haven't played enough golf in the last 10 years to really add more. My favourite course is always Knott End, because that's where I was a member. A fair test, not too hard for medium handicapper like me, but always superb condition. I learned at Poulton, in the Brendan Ward/council track days, that seems to vary in condition from year to year, but it's always interesting to see how the course has grown up since I played it as a kid, with the big trees that were just a few feet tied to a stake back then.

The only private course I play now is Blackburn GC, off Revidge Road as that's where my playing partner's a member. That's a good course, quite hard and a good walk.

Garstang's an enjoyable place to play, as public courses go.

Heard the same for 30 years mate. It's not an easy track.

What I want to know is are there still hares on Fleetwood GC or have the local scrotes killed them all off? Was a junior member there back in the Stone Age, spent as long watching the wildlife as I did hitting the ball with my golf sticks.

1983 was a bad year for that....

If there’s no wind. North Shore becomes very straightforward. You can aim down the wrong fairway and get away with it but... it’s in good nick usually and deserves respect. Fleetwood is a better course in my opinion but it’s been good to measure opinions on here.

All depends whether you like to play links or parkland courses.

Not being funny Wizz, but reading that review you've not made any local courses sound appealing ! 😄
