Pilley gets 13 years

Per BBC Lancs:

‘His Honour Judge Knowles KC, said Pilley, who had been jailed for conspiracy to steal from the post office in 1998, presented a "sordid tale of squalid lies, greed and fraud." He continued: "You are a hypocrite who will not tolerate criticism."’
He was a crook - end of - took advantage of others and felt he was above reproach.
Fair play to the guy for his investment in the town and club but increasingly to me it now looks like a cover up for what he was really doing behind the scenes.

Trouble is he was investing in the town with blood money

13 effing years??? We live in one twisted society that's outrageous, poor bugger will have to serve 2/3rds IIRC. Stupid sentence for a non violent crime.
Always someone siding with the criminal. It might be non violent but with financial crime the sentence needs to be big if the money is big. How many people would do a 4 stretch if they were coming out to millions in the bank.

You also need to remember he was given a much shorter sentence for a much smaller fraud years back and that taught him nothing.

I’ll save my sympathy for his victims.

Fleetwood Town Football Club acknowledges the sentencing in the court case involving former club chairman, Andy Pilley.

The club would like to reiterate convictions are against individuals and not Fleetwood Town FC, or any of the businesses associated with them, and will continue to operate as normal.

Fleetwood Town remain in communication with the EFL and will be making no further comment at this time.

Perhaps he invested in the town because it was cheap, and he could get cheap, desperate workers who wouldn’t ask questions or make waves because they needed the work?

Feel sorry for the guy if I’m honest. At the end of the day he’s been a Pool fan for decades and even when at the Cods went to most of our big games. It’s only financial crime, you could beat someone to within an inch of their life and get a suspended sentence and he gets 13 years. Whatever your opinion of him the Fylde Coast has lost a major investor and people kicking him when he’s down need to remember that.

That statement is almost word for word same as Waterford.
The fact is Fleetwood cannot possibly sustain a league presence without a major backer and I think they will have to resign from the league.
Waterford is interesting, maybe Sadler can offer to take them over as well given we are actively looking at the Irish market for players and we can loan out promising dev players to a competitive league

'Only financial crime'? People's livelihoods were ruined, people's businesses closed down because they couldn't afford the energy contracts they were scammed into, the suffering his company has caused people will have been massive.

Amazing how some people still don't think of white collar crime as a real crime. They don't see the victims. Ripping off and defrauding small businesses, with the state of the economy right now, some of those will have gone out of business. He targeted charities children's charities and companies providing support for disabled people. He's the lowest of the low. And yet I can't help but think if he was wearing trackie bottoms and nicking cans from a supermarket some people would think worse of him.

"it's only financial crime",

Nevermind the small business owners who had spent years building their livelihoods destroyed because of him.

It’s not acceptable I accept that and he should be sentenced but the basic fact is you’d get a lesser sentence if you’d drunk 15 pints and ran someone over killing them. So compared to the ridiculous sentences I see daily for outrageous acts of violence and rape I think he has been harshly treated.

This in no way excuses Pilley’s and his co-defendants‘ crimes but unlike a domestic energy contract from what I understand there is no cooling off period when signing an energy contract for a business and this provided the loophole for them to exploit. I don’t know why business is treated differently but if the regulator extended the cooling of period to business it would at least reduce the potential for frauds like this.

Only financial crime? The whole of our capitalist society's way of life depends on people honestly following the rules of our financial systems. If everyone ignored that and robbed each other, we'd be in absolute anarchy.

The law was changed last year to allow life imprisonment for death by dangerous driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Why should he get any sympathy just because he's a 'Pool fan? He's a criminal, a conman, a fraudster & I have no sympathy for anyone that profits at the expense of others...he has literally destroyed people's livelihoods just so he can live the high life. fcuk him.
I'm sure Steve Smith will get a very sympathetic response when he gets sentenced because he's a pool fan

What I find amazing is how multi multi millionairs with a lifestyle most of us can only dream about where money is no object are so greedy that they would risk their reputation and liberty to try to grab more. The Oystons lost everything because they got greedy as well

That was only a small reason why Andy bought Waterford, there would be a lot more bonuses to anyone buying them now if they are for sale

What's made up? A 100% shareholding with the shareholder in jail causes huge problems. If you can't see that, that's your lookout.
There isn't a cat in hells chance he could have bought our club as he already owned another one

That's what is made up

You may as well be saying Abramovich nearly bought it and parked his tank on Spen corner firing £50 notes towards south shore

Changed the debate there. So he couldn't have offloaded the Cods to take over Pool, which some on here were advocating?

Ditto Dogfood Dave.

On the radio, they were reporting that suspicions were raised when his companies grew from about 10 million a year to almost 100 million overnight. For most people owning a company producing a few million a year would give them a tremendous lifestyle, however, to have real
success with a football club you need investment to run into the 10's of millions especially when you have hardly any income through supporters.
Perhaps the desire or maybe downright greed to have success with Fleetwood was his downfall.

The trouble with Fleetwood FC is that the only way you could possibly get any money invested back or return a profit would be to sell it in
the premier league, to a foreign owner. It has no heritage of supporters. It was a gamble that he was prepared to take, and unfortunately for him, he lost, along with all the small businesses he defrauded along the way.
