R.I.P. Scrooges

Just seen on social media that Scrooges has closed it's doors forever due to the Council buying all the buildings in that block.

Had some wonderful nights in there back in the day. Not been in for a while but still sad to see it go

🤯The rumours are true...🤯😢

It is with a VERY heavy heart 💔 that we have to announce, that the award winning Scrooges Bar will not open its friendly doors again 😔.

The council have been wanting Scrooges Bar, Reform Health Club and several other land & properties we own in the town centre for redevelopment for some time now.... and a deal has finally been done 🖊.

It is always hard to walk away from a hugely successful business, but even harder to walk away from a way of life and probably losing contact with some of THE SOUNDEST CUSTOMERS any bar could ask for ❤️. Scrooges will miss you all loads. Xxx

The worst thing for us is that due to Covid, we don’t get to have one last party. You don’t get to have one last mental sesh with all your mates 🍺🍷🍻🍹🍷🥂. There will be no photographs on socials of an amazing sending off party... and that is always gonna be sad for us 😢...

BUT LETS REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES 🤩😬.... because there were LOADS of them. Let’s remember all the AMAZING parties we had and hopefully if we can find a new building.... THEN LETS OPEN UP AGAIN SOMEWHERE ELSE??? Who is up for Scrooges 2? We are game if you are??? (Anyone know of a good building get in touch) 😎🍺🍻🍹

Thanks to all our absolutely amazingly loyal customers and staff who came to see us week after week. We will sincerely miss you all xx

Love always,

Owen & Maria Pouncy xxx

What a shame. As a youth used to love going there. The lady was really friendly and always remembered your face. Curtains shut and the lock in commenced and getting smashed on fruit flavoured wines. Happy times.

I think nearly everyone will have been in there at some point for at least one non beer beverage!

Ah, they're turning into a car park then. That's the Council's speciality.
My thoughts too. Knock everything down, build a car park while they decide what to do and years later they still have a car park.

I can’t blame Scrooge’s for selling in the current climate though and it’s good to see the council have plenty of money in such uncertain times.

The high street is going to take an absolute battering so I’ll be interested to see the demand for car parks over the next couple of years too.

The council keep borrowing money to fund, well not that much.

Anyone know what's happening with central carpark and the new white elephant they were building😂

Sounds like my experiences too. Is that the Geordie woman who owned and ran it in the late 80s/early 90s? She was a great landlady, really friendly but took no messing.

Very sad, I have had some great nights in there over the years! The strawberry wine got us very drunk a couple of times.

Cmon, let’s have some Positivity ffs. Not everything in Blackpool is a white Elephant. For all you know it may turn out to be a huge success in a very run down part of town. Bugs me the constant negativity on this board.

I like your positive attitude but the council have been shite too many times for me, wasting our money in the process.

Very sad. Have had great times in there, especially during the Tommyfest era.
You didn’t have to go far for a good night back in the day - Bluey, Scrooge’s, Gillies, the Hop and the Tash.
🥳

Only went in a couple of times when it first opened late 70's or early 80's. It was coming up to Christmas and they didn't have any Christmas songs so me and the first wife put a cassette together of them which they could play. If I remember rightly they bought us a couple of drinks but to be honest it wasn't my sort of place.

In 1964 the Council overturned Beeching and got Central station closed because it gave them a wonderful development opportunity. Just think, 2076 will see the announcement of plans to redevelop Scrooges if we're lucky.

They will have demolished the tower and winter gardens for car parks in the meantime and tarmacked over Stanley Park

Is it the same block that houses the Hop in ? If so can they demolish it or is it listed. I thought it had been earmarked for flats so if that the case then maybe it might end up as a car park.

No its not in the same block as the Hop. Looks like the Council are buying up properties in that run down area of Cookson St for demolition which is a good idea as its a right dump, the brothels will need to relocate elsewhere. Looks like Owen and Maria have gotten out a the right time so good luck to them as they're a lovely couple and good business people.

Hopefully there will be a new one opening elsewhere though it can never be the same. Look at the tache as an example (though I do still like going there when I'm in town).
