Reading Football Club has been charged with multiple breaches of EFL Regulations.

The charges relate to the Club failing to meet their obligations to pay its players’ wages on time and in full on or around 31 October 2022, 30 November 2022 and 28 April 2023.

Yongge Dai, the Club’s owner, has also been charged with causing the Club to be in breach of EFL Regulations despite his commitment to fund the cash requirements of the Club.

The Club and Mr Dai have until 4pm on Thursday 29 June 2023 to respond to the charges.

But surely the EFL did due diligence on Mr Dai and consider him fit and proper to run a football club

I think there'll be a few more as well - imagine if the O's were still in charge! We'd be on -20!

If those scumbags still owned the club when COVID hit I doubt we'd have a club anymore, absolutely no way they would have put the money in that Simon Sadler did to keep us afloat.
He's not perfect, but we should thank our lucky stars he came along and saved us when he did. He's got more class and pride in his little finger than that family have combined.

I expect the vetting process goes something like:

EFL: er, are you a fit and proper person to own a football club?
Prospective owner: yes
EFL: well that’s all right then….

I have little time for the EFL, but I am going to defend them a bit here.

Historically, there have been two main problems with them :

1) their culture. Under Mr. Harvey, they didn't want to regulate their member clubs, or exert any meaningful control over their behaviour. Exposing this, and creating a wider sense of outrage about it, was THE big political win that BST helped secure during the period from 2015-19.

2) their powers. There are a lot of them, but they are narrowly framed and not very flexible, nor do they afford the EFL discretion, or the right to real-time information about club performance and / or financial data on key individuals.

Under Mr. Birch they have made some real progress on (1), albeit until he has completely purged his senior team of Harvey's people there will always be a worry about them in my eyes.

They are still fighting with one hand behind their back on (2), albeit the pressure of impending independent regulation has forced some progressive change. But they still are finding all this a struggle. and the system still involves clubs marking their own homework to an unacceptable degree, when you consider how irresponsibly some of them behave. **

** Our current owner is one of the more responsible ones ; we lose money, but we do so in a measured and fairly controlled way, with a medium term financial / investment plan in place that is flexible enough to be adapted to changing circumstances (like a change of Division).

The same can't be said for a lot of clubs in the Championship, where costs control seems to be an alien concept. This is what has tripped up Reading and Wigan, hamstrung clubs like Cardiff and Birmingham and limited the scope for advancement for clubs like us and Rotherham. The more I think about it, the more of an anomaly clubs like Luton seem.

Really good article on their predicament and definitely no threat next season.

Last week was quite a week for Reading Football Club. The club finally broke the silence with an official statement from the CEO, that appeared to match something AI might have generated, only for the next day to see the EFL issue a statement with far more bite. The Royals will certainly be punished further for financial irregularities that also include failing to pay players, but we still don't know how far future punishments will go. There will be a transfer embargo, which can't come at a worse time with the transfer window open and Reading's first team squad ridiculously thin. There could also be a substantial points deduction. Since then there has been more silence, only broken today by the club getting excited about the release of the League One fixture this week.

There have been a few mild grumblings from fans and a few calls of "Dai Out", but that could lead to further trouble, with the owner recently putting six million pounds into the club to keep it afloat. The club are in huge debt so we would need someone willing to take that on. Sure, any protest may accelerate his departure, and he is probably tired of putting his money into the club, but we might just need someone else lined up first? It would be good news if our owner sold up but what if he walks? The future of Reading Football Club hangs in the balance.

It is rumoured that the club will appeal anything handed out by the Football League, but the problem is that we probably won't have much grounds for appeal. Guilty as charged. It would be helpful it the EFL could do something more to help their members work out of these problems than simply trying to inflict a further relegation, and therefore more financial chaos.

With all the issues behind the scenes it is almost a side issue that the Royals still have no manager and Chris Wilder will not be coming to the club. Wilder was firm favourite for so long and it was alleged to be a done deal, so Reading drifted along waiting for that. And it never happened. Instead the new rumour is former Southampton manager Ruben Selles. To say that Selles failed at Southampton is an understatement after he picked up just 2 wins in 17 games on the way to getting Southampton relegated before he left the club. He is not like the man for the job.

Meanwhile, Reading will be forced to turn to young players coming up through the academy and put them straight into League One fixtures. That may be incentive to stay and get first team football, but the club can not compete when it comes to competitive contracts for professional footballers. We can only expect further departures before the new season gets underway.

Ince is going to Watford apparently, having activated a £50,000 release clause in his contract.

According to something I just read on Twitter that leaves them with nine players under contract, two of whom have long-term injuries. I'm not sure how true that is, but they are clearly up against it.

Think it’s about that. And that includes Andy Carroll, who will probably be fit for two games (against us, home and away)

Being a few minutes from Heathrow Airport probably guarantees that another overseas owner will fancy them. Then again there’s no reason to believe they’ll be any better than the last three … maybe they can merge with Oxford United 🤫

I vaguely remember talk in the 80s about a possible merger of reading and oxford with a name something like Thames Valley Royals. Hope Ive not dreamt this.

Ruben Selles appointed Reading manager. 40 year old Spaniard who was briefly Southampton boss.

When do they decide if they will have a points deduction? Notice on the League One table Wigan are on -8 but no deductions for Reading?

Reading haven’t been given a points deduction as yet. Somehow don’t think they will. Ya know what the efl are like takes them months to sort things out
