Reflections on last night

The bottom line is that Tranmere just about deserved a win because they physically bossed the game, particularly in the first half.
Their front two put themselves about and created the two goals by outmuscling our defenders. While a number of players weren’t up to the physical challenge that Tranmere presented. Delfonso, Feeney, Nutall and Ronan all lacked the desire to compete. In fact a couple seemed intimidated into backing off.
Our defence was under pressure and we badly lack a dominant centre half. The front players were toothless and, on the whole, lacked the ability to hold on to the ball to relieve the pressure on the defence. It is also obvious we lack a single player with the pace to get behind an opposition who are Up for it.

Our best playe look like those lads on loan so there is much for Neil Critchley to sort by the start of next season

Ref played his part giving them every free kick going down at the drop of a hat and the ref bought it every time. Just like when he reffed the game against Shrewsbury. Sunday league ref at best that one
We were great second half and certainly deserved a point

Why did we deserve a point?
We scored one wonder goal and had one shot saved by the keeper, apart from that we had lots of possessions but their keeper was only troubled to take goal kicks

The strength was a factor but the key is that they were streetwise. Monthe, Vaughan, Ferrier et al waited for our boys to push back and threw themselves to the ground. The referee bought it every time...but that's no great surprise at this level. I guess the take away thought is you need to mix youth (for energy, willingness) and experience (to avoid being bullied).

Mr Critchley summed it up best - it was exactly the sort of game Tranmere wanted.

However if Ronan's shot goes in for 2-2 with the momentum we had - we might have been talking about a glorious comeback victory this morning.

Also have to disagree with the comment about Ronan's physicality - have you seen his stature? He'll never be that sort of player. That's like bemoaning Wes Hoolahan in his pomp because he didn't get stuck in.

Never good to lose at home but better Critchley sees our weaknesses now and can therefore coach the players to be better or draw up a list of players who need to move on and a list of targets who can play the way he wants. I'm as guilty as any of over reacting during a game, we need to show patience, the reason NC has been appointed is to turn us around, I have every confidence he will do that given time and backing.

Exactly what I said to my brother in law at half time.
We certainly lacked the physicality of their front two.

Our problem isn't physical strength, it's mental strength. We have some big lads too, they just aren't determined or aggressive enough to dictate what happens. Too many of the individual battles in matches are being lost by us. They need to be far tougher mentally.

We don't seem to have many players who have a footballing brain. Too many of them don't seem capable of making intelligent runs or playing balls in to the correct positions to allow team mates to get forward. More often than not balls are played behind them so any momentum is killed.
Feeney and Spearing, ironically the two most experienced players in the squad, are guilty of this.
Critchley has got his work cut out coaching this lot.

I don't recall our keeper being troubled so if you're basing it on how much work the keepers had to do of course we deserved a point.
