If Appleton were to go, thoughts of poaching Richie from Leyton Orient?

Doing very well there. Would he leave?

I know he had an interview with us when Grayson got the job back in 2019.

We couldn’t tempt a couple of notable players from league one clubs in the summer so I’d guess it would be the same for managers currently in employment. 😫

Absolutely flying down there. Took over last season when they looked like relegation was a real prospect, kept them up and now they’re flying. Top of the league, top scorers and best defence. He certainly knows what he’s doing in League 2. I’d definitely give him a chance at BR. Not sure how popular he’d be though. Was a bit of a pantomime villain for a while after leaving us but when you consider it he was far far too good for us and the no doubt shite wages we offered.

In a heartbeat..Apparently it was Richie who mentioned Keshi & Jerry Yates to the board during his interview (from his spell at Swindon) before Critchley got the job.

Not sure

He s at his fifth club in 5 years.
Tbf to Wellens he jumped in the deep end with his first job at Oldham (a job that’s been cursed for the last decade it seems) and acknowledged he made mistakes. He the joined Swindon and did brilliantly (league title), jumped ship for mega money and to work for his friends at Salford where he again did pretty well but was ousted due to internal politics (despite winning the EFL trophy) and then joined Doncaster who were also seemingly a sinking ship similar to Oldham. He’s definitely bounced back at Leyton Orient.

Wherever he’s had a modicum of support and hasn’t been watching his team dismantled as per an ongoing fire sale he’s done excellently. Plays good football and the fans all seem to like him.

Leyton Orient must be a decent club to be at but you’ve got to imagine a move to Blackpool would interest him.

Behave yourself, he won the final as it was delayed a year. Alexander got them there and on the cusp of promotion and then inexplicably got binned.

The final was an absolute pig of a game - but yeh they still won. He kept saying he didn’t want the game to be when it was as it was a distraction.

Can’t see Wellen’s being an upgrade on Appleton at all.

We need to see what we do this Jan and then let Appleton fly with it for a few months.

Got a sneaky feeling we’re going to sign a fair few players this Jan.

Thought he was a great player for us. Know he's not popular with a good few of our fans but I never really got all that hatred of him.

I'd agree with all that.

I'd have reservations because although he'd soon turn fans round if successful, they might not be very patient if he didn't start too well but I'll worry about all that if Appleton gets the nine, ten, jack and Wellens replaces him.

Doesn’t matter who we go for does it. They may be the messiah or a total waste of space (delete as appropriate). Give them half a season and f**k em off down the road if results are sh*t (no excuses). Simples. Eventually we’ll hit the jackpot.

Always liked Wellens and never got the hate from some of our lot although may have just been banter hate as he was far too good for us at the time he was here. Plays an attractive style which I like and has a pretty good CV. I'm surprised he didn't get it last time actually but we went a different route with Critchley but I'd be very happy with Wellens.

Thanks . I didn’t know this .

Likewise never understood the hate . Was a cracking player imo .

Great idea ,Lets get a bloke in that has publicly stated he hates the club and he would have rather played for Morcambe [when non league]. He has been booed every time he has set foot in Bloomfield Rd and the chant" Wellens is a wanker "will still be ringing in his ears. I see posts like this and think that Appleton should stay for the full length of his contract just to shut up the so called serious posts we get on here . I have heard that its easy to get hold of drugs in Blackpool.

Yes, he was a pantomime villain after he left. But during his time with us, he was one of my favourite players. Always had that bit of quality about him.

However, I do agree with the post above. There would be sections of the crowd who would never accept him.

There's a massive difference between a player playing for the opposition and how he reacts to the abuse he gets to how a manager is. We as fans have given loads of players as well as Wellens abuse. Wellens has now become a manager. Whether he's a good one or not is all about different opinions. But imo we shouldn't judge his ability to be a good manager for us based on how he was as an opposition player. As I said above for me, he was a fantastic player for us.

Can never understand the dislike of Wellens. Good player for us in a bad time and pushed out by Hendry hoofball.

If Appleton gets potted which is looking likely, then the board know there is no margin for any errors this time they have to get it right with an appointment that will unite our fanbase and bring folk through the turnstiles , string rumours that Stevie Gerrard is waiting in the wings.

Well Gerrard wouldnt bring the fans together. Hardly a great CV either, doing well in Scotland with Rangers before massively crashing and burning at Villa after spending loads and nicking our manager.

There is one common denominator in Gerards success as a manager, and he is now in charge of Rangers

I really can't buy into this Gerrard as manager for so many reasons. I really don't think he'd be even interested in the job.

For anybody wanting to know his management style he features in one or two (from memory) episodes of the Salford City documentary. Comes across well in it and got the team playing well. I think he was sacked either with the team just outside the playoffs or failing to gain promotion and I recall watching it thinking it was harsh.

Decent watch for anyone interested.

Would reckon Gerrard would bring fans together, but doubt he would be interested to be honest. We would also end up on sky sports a lot more with him in charge.

Absolutely no chance

I think Richie divided a lot of fans as a player (both when he played for us and when he didn't!) and if there's one thing we need post Appleton it's a manager who can unite us.

Well said, Wellens was a brilliant player for us but some will never acknowledge that because he did a going down sign whilst at Oldham, no doubt he got pelters all game from some of our fan base and when a player dares to respond they are absolutely out of order.

If I had fans goading me all game and giving me stick if I got a chance to wind them up then bloody right I would, regardless if I played for them or not.

Some fans seem to think “banter” can only work one way at games.

He has done fantastic at Orient that can’t be denied but not sure he’s the answer for us and as someone else has pointed out the Salford documentary didn’t do him many favours.

Wellens still lives in Worsley. He had his house up for sale about 12/18 months ago but it is now off the market
So compared to Orient, Blackpool is on his doorstep.
Regardless of how well a manager is doing at any particular club it is human nature that they want to better themselves so a move to a Championship club would be a step up for Wellens, however, it is only names being suggested as a replacement for Appleton by members of this forum so highly unlikely not to happen.
I disagree with those who say certain managers would divide the fans or wouldn’t be welcome.
If a new manager did come and won their first 5 matches then they would be treated like messiah.
And for all this to happen the board have got to get rid of Appleton.

its the same with Mickey Mellon, people were clamouring for him to get the job a while back totally forgetting him running the full length of the pitch at Turd Moor to goad the away fans when he scored for the dingles. Its not different to wellens, love a bit of shithousery and always liked him as a player.

It means we will have to find 7 years of compensation.
Yes of course but it still doesn’t mean it stops managers getting sacked or moving on.
Didn’t we get £1.5m compo for Critchley for the exact same reason? Had 2 years left of his contract?

I’d be happy if Richie became our manager “one day”.
I really rated him as a player, I rated Steve McMahon as a manager, never really understood though why he gave Richie so much shit.🚌🧡
