Rotherham v Blackpool Official Matchnight Thread 14.09.22

U
that was Grayson Mk 2 level bad. it s as though the players were playing together for the first time. All over the place positionally. Two of the goals just really sloppy the third we were left short handed. I want to say bad day at the office, learn from it and go again, but im just not sure as a team they know what they are supposed to be doing.

We're not really pressing but we kind of are, we're letting a very poor team in Rotherham keep possession in front of our back three / four and just inviting pressure. no width, no movement.

i dont think we have a bad player in the squad, we know what they can do, at the very least there is usually the fight in the team but its like everyone had had their evening Horlicks and was ready for bed.
Unfair to call Rotherham a very poor team, theyre no mugs, i expected a hard game tonight but i didnt expect us to be so shit

Totally clueless,Dougall and Connolly would struggle to pick their nose ,never mind a forward pass.relegation is on the cards if things don’t change.why oh why do we stand off and let the opposition play.

For me Rotherham looked a league above us. We were lightweight throughout the team and sadly I can't honestly see that the likes of Carey and Patino changing that in any way. I don't particularly rate Connolly or Dougall but things got even worse when they went off. I'm convinced now that this season is going to be a struggle to survive. I would be amazed if we are not in the bottom six at the end of the season. Just praying that we can avoid the bottom three.

Williams is proving to be to slow when he is turned. We've got 3 spaces in the squad. We must bring a good Centre back in, lad from Fulham. A sriker is desparately needed. I know people will shout me down but someone like Izzy Brown could make a difference up front if we can get him fit.
The midfield is a problem.

Maybe unfair, they were prepared to work and fight.
We are supposed to be setting up to play a high intensity game, and yet we are pedestrian in possession and tonight we weren't even good at closing down in defence.

That is the first time this season I have to question Appleton. Wrong formation and failed to change it. We were very poor against Huddersfield too and we are desperately short of a couple of experienced leaders on the pitch. Vey poor transfer window, worst I can remember and that's saying something so there can only be one person you can point the finger at for that.

We missed Josh tonight and he is going to be a massive miss because we haven't got anyone anywhere near as good as he is. We have some decent loan players, apart from Williams but we just lack cohesion, we haven't got the players we need to play the system MA wants so it is square pegs in round holes and players who aren't good enough.

The squad should be improving season after season, but it isn't. A few poor results and we'll be looking for a new manager, a few decent results and we will all be wondering what we were worrying about. A 4 year contract for a manager could be a costly thing though, who the fuck thought that one up?

I'd have them in training tomorrow morning. I'm not joking
I don’t think that would make any difference, we train regularly but don’t get any better. Perhaps if the opposition start playing games by jogging in circles round an empty pitch we would win. In the ‘training’ videos I’ve seen that’s all they appear to do.

I’m not that worried yet as I’ve seen us play badly on far to many occasions & with the odd tweak usually in midfield we’ve looked a different team. Only thing is who’s going to provide that spark.

Exactly.

We showboated against Burnley and we looked like Lg 1 at best tonight. Ups and downs, learning curves, bad days, good days.

Give it time ffs we aren‘t even 2 months in to the season.

I’ve just got back now. What a load of shite that was. I feel sorry for Jerry Yates. Works his bollocks off and gets left on his own up front with no service.

Clueless management to not spot that Rhys Williams is potentially the worst player in the history of Blackpool FC. I’d be happy if I never saw him play football again, let alone wear a tangerine shirt.

My patience train has hit the buffers. 💥 🚂

Back to shredding that pile of old letters. Seems somewhat therapeutic after that.
Or maybe ripping a load by hand.
Or setting it on fire in a bucket. Yes. 🤪😵‍💫 🔥

The inability to play a straightforward pass both with accuracy and to weight it correctly is something we've suffered from for over two years now, and is why we're still relying on a winger to take on the entire defence to provide our dangerous moments. It's quite pitiful to witness actually.

Five at the back has never, and will never, work as well as a back four. Please ditch it Michael, and never think of it again. I'd rather see us playing players out of position than playing that formation. It's a particularly useless formation when you don't play any midfielders that are capable of retaining possession, because the full backs are constantly caught out of position when you continually lose the ball so easily.
Enough! We have midfielders available now, please use them.

I think our failure to land proven experienced players during the transfer window and instead having to bring in young kids on loan is now starting to tell.

Clearly Appleton has not been supported by Mansford in getting several players over the line that he clearly wanted.

Williams shouldn’t play again this season, 5 at the back is hopeless… I really don’t understand what Appleton was watching tonight - I can’t remember the last time I saw us play that poorly, pathetic performance

When you say clearly, you mean 'quite possibly'.

We couldn't pass to a blue shirt
Our trouble is that when a team plays a high pressing game against us, and are in our faces, we can't cope as we haven't got anyone who can pass the ball accurately when under pressure apart from young Patino, but today he came on too late to affect the game, we are high energy and sometimes that may be enough, to get us through, but not often enough. now that Josh has gone, I like many others fear for us this season

Should have changed the system at halftime, unfortunately playing 3 center-halves doesn't work unless one is really comfortable with the ball
and can bring it out from defense. Not sure why he didn't change at halftime unless the midfielders on the bench are not fully fit.
It was obvious that we needed in the transfer window to buy a championship-quality striker, an experienced championship-quality attacking midfielder to play alongside Dougall, and a championship-quality left-footed center-half that was taller and quicker than Thorniley, plus a replacement for Bowler if he got sold. All we got in were young inexperienced players, hopefully, it will improve when they get fitter and play together.
