Salford v Blackpool Official Matchnight Thread 19.07.22

What does he do well?

He is absolutely atrocious and doesn’t bring anything to the team. Not a thing.
He's taken the ball well out wide, passed it well, beaten his marker but a few crosses in, so much better than Lavery who really was shit tonight. Anderson doesn't do I for me either, CJ is a decent player, wait and see as the season progresses, we shall reconvene! 😉

I’ve watched him for 2 seasons and he isn’t good enough for this level.

He hasn’t put any good crosses in. He has made a few basic 5 yard passes. He’s got no ability, he’s a one trick pony who seems to have lost his trick. He had pace and that’s vanished. I’d take any Blackpool player over him. It’s a ruthless business but I’d be very shocked if he did anything to change my mind. He won’t play much if we land a winger and keep Bowler.

Far from convincing from what I saw - Looked like Ekpiteta took a knock right at the end (not actually sure it was him). Had the tube on but no sound

From what my kids let me watch 🤨 thought Fiorini does look good and thought virtue while obviously not a right back had good moments going forward then showed the class I think he really has when in centre mid. I still really rate him tbh.

Hope Apter makes it at Blackpool, I do like the look of him too, plays with no fear, which is what I think Lavery looks to have lost atm. Hope he can turn it around too though.

He made the first goal and scored the second or don't those count in your world?
Did you not read where I said one game? Against atrocious opposition. He did nothing tonight. Nothing against Rangers. He’s anonymous 99% of the time.

Genuinely tell me what he does well?

Just an opinion on what I saw tonight. I only saw the Southport game previous to this. Lubala Dale and Lavery not championship players on what I saw tonight. Very sad to see Grant Ward run out of steam after 15 minutes he has been brilliant for us but I fear that this is the end of the road with us. Very impressed with Tharm Apter and Moore and yet again Thorniley didn't put a foot wrong. With the projected signings coming into the club I think we could loose Lubala Dale Ward and Lavery without too many worries.

Looks like his confidence has been completely shot, had two great chances for headers and wiffed them both then was played in on goal and just froze.

Maybe Critchley's system suited him better because he didn't need to be on the ball as much?
Got to say I don’t think he looked anywhere near fit enough. Looked a stone (not sure what that is in American fake weights🤪)

He seemed to not have the fitness to push the ball past someone and keep going.

Was fooked after one track back.

Very disappointing

Positives.

Virtue in midfield looked good.
Tharme didn’t look out of place and looked solid.
Apter had a good cameo.
Yates got a goal with limited service.
Foirrini looks the nuts.
If we keep Bowler we stay up.

We are still lacking a creative edge.
I thought Carey looked good when he came on, if only we could have a fit Stewart to play in the holding role. If Huddersfield want to buy Anderson I'd drive him there myself!! 🤣

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Hamilton needs to go. He simply does not have a clue. Agree Apter should be in the squad, and Virtue was much better when he played in his correct position.

That was miles better than the first half. We looked to be more positive, our movement off the ball was better, we retained possession better.
It's hard to tell against league 2 opponents, but I thought the two main plus points were Apter and Tharme. Tharme looks a unit but he also showed a few glimpses of good awareness and positional sense. I've only seen him in this one game but there's something there that makes me get why we signed him.
Apter showed he has pace, and he times his runs well when getting forward. I'm not convinced he's a full back, but clearly has some quality.
For me, we still often lack end product from wide areas, and I'm not convinced how our full backs will cope defensively against championship wingers. Gabriel the possible exception. If we can get the guy from Ireland, and someone like Morgan Rogers, then I think that's a long way towards a competitive championship squad. If Colby Bishop can add something different too, then all the better.

Anderson didn’t look remotely arsed when he came on tbf
I have the same opinion about him as you do about CJ, I'd fuck off Lavery too, Yates was miles better than him tonight. Sad to see Ward run out of steam so quickly, he had a good first 20 minutes but was shagged after that. Dale has never been and will never be good enough and I like Bez but he needs to be playing in league 1 or 2.

Exciting to see who's coming in and I still have a sneaky feeling we will get Bowler tied down to a new contract with a clause in his favour for release.

Nor does Lavery and Dale , not sure why CJ is always the one picked out.
Lavery was awful tonight, and poor on Sat too. CJ is consistent if nothing else, consistently very poor, that's why he's always mentioned - a blind man could see it. As said earlier, I think Dale could be good, many won't agree. Bowler showed what an offensive player should be doing, so pleased he's still with us.

And half the posters on here wanted Tharme sent out on loan before they had even seen him play.

Tharme looks decent to me, I didn’t understand people automatically thinking he needs to go out on loan.

He’s 23 next month we need to see what he can do this season.

It was only a Lg 2 side but he was outstanding, pace was unreal as well.

Lavery hasn't been the same since his injury, he doesn't seem quick enough to get half a yard in front of the defenders, to shoot. Anderson I really thought would be a massive miss last season when he got injured & I was really pleased to see him return, perhaps he just needs game time, tonight he was too slow & ultimately lost momentum. I'm not writing anyone off yet as I don't think Critchley managed to get the right balance very often during his reign, so Appleton probably needs a little more time. I'd guess the team selection on Saturday will be close to our starting line up for the Reading game. I'd still like to see the wide men swapping sides now & again, a Holloway legacy, but it keeps the defenders guessing.

One game? Against a dire team. He can’t pass. Can’t shoot. Can’t cross. Can’t head. Has no technique at all.
He's a bit one-dimensional and too inconsistent. But he works hard, has pace and (albeit not often enough) he can go past a man and actually pick someone out.

You get yourself terribly over-excited criticising him for some reason. Ideally he won't be a starter and we'll have better options but not sure we're there yet, though Apter is interesting.

I think MA gently reminded them that they are playing for places at 1/2 time. Came out more on the front foot and pushed up.

Better 2nd half and as the quality and experience came on for us. I think Apter is shaping up well - though it is a big jump from where he was last season to first team championship, but I think he’s definitely going to be in the squad.

For the most part I think we have a ‘solid’ squad - always room for more quality - and they are still getting to grips with MA system.

I think my worry beads are:

Lavery looked totally off - let’s hope it’s only temporary

CJ - I’m afraid you can’t build a whole career based on his performance vs Brum. Yes he’s fast, but so is a whippet and at least one of they might actually challenge for the ball.

Keshi looked disinterested?

Dale is quite hit and miss - too many unforced errors but some good touches and willing to have a go at goal.

Maxi vs Grimmy?? I prefer Grimmy on last season’s showing.

Hopefully we’ll get a better feel for what’s what vs Everton.

If he’s happy being outside the squad and developing then fine. Issue is he is behind Marv MUR, Williams, Thorniley, Hubby and maybe even Connolly for CB.
We might still need the CB depth as the season goes on (injuries) so it depends whether he’s happy to bide his time until then, or wants week in week out football - then it’s loan time

You could well be right

Tbh I think someone’s leaving out of those lot, I could be wrong and Tharme’s out on loan.

Think Connolly should be on no other position other than defensive mid. There should be enough at CB for him jot not be needed.

I get the feeling Crazy King Rich is here as a squad presence now, nurturing the young lads. Think he’ll have limited game time but will still add value.

Marv, Thorniley, Williams and Tharme will be the 4 as I see it for the 2 CB positions. Also gives us the room to manoeuvre to to a 3 at the back.

Thorneily could go tomorrow though and that might change it all, The Williams signing suggest someone is going. I’m waffling now 🤪 I blame the heat.

Ultimately I think Tharme might have a good shot at the first team this year.

See Grayth's response.

Lavery has done jack since his hamstring injury, he looks nowhere near the player he was.
Dale, words fail me. He was crap, got injured, we signed him and he's still crap.

The first half was awful. We didn't play any joined up flowing football going forward, Jerry was isolated and our passing was way off.
The 2nd half was an improvement, but we are shot shy - what do we do on the training ground to rectify this. "When your running towards the opposition box and you can see their goal, stop fannying about and shoot".
I do wonder how some players were fortunate enough to become professional, let alone with a Championship club.
