Shayne Lavery

To be fair to Lavers, he's had some tricky injuries during the last 12 months and I don't think he's really got back to his old self yet.

CJ took ages to get back to normal after his hammy went and Lavers looks to be on a similar journey?

There were a lot on here touting him (pre-season) as the potential divisions top scorer, so give the guy a few more matches to see if his form returns I say..

I like Lavery but I was disappointed with him throwing himself to the ground whenever a Barnsley player came near him.

The ref, who I thought had a good game, wasn't taken in by it.

The ref was brilliant. Looked like they should have had one pen at least.

I think he was fully fit at the start of the season but has already been injured twice and it showed today, my concern is that he is always going to be susceptible to the hamstring injury and that is always going to mean he is never fully fit/ Kouassi was far more of a handful and takes the pressure off Rhodes, once he is fully match fit he is going to be difficult to shift from the team.

Lavery will play his part but it will be off the bench.

Guy is a goddamn great player.

Pretty sure all the bright sparks on here who say all the negative stuff have never kicked a ball ..or even played. He brings something very different to a team other than a big lad up front, which can also be nrcessary at times. Really annoys me how shallow and short memories some people have. Was voted by almost every member of our squad at the start of the season to be our top scorer. Support our team, and our players.

Lavs was fantastic for the first few months after we got him and until injuries hit. He was on a roll from pre-season into the start of this season. I think it's quite simple for him in thay he needs to stay fit which means he'll get games and then he'll go on a run. I suspect he's one of those strikers that always scores in clusters when he gets his confidence up.

He’s shyte 😂

He is miles better than Kouassi (who was poor today) but because he is new he will get the support.
😂
It was immediately apparent that Kouassi had a huge impact on that game today, the minute that Lavery came on.

We lost the ability to retain possession in their half and found ourselves pinned back as a result.

Kouassi has been the primary difference in both our recent games for me.

Ha. Huge impact on the game. He barely touched the ball.

Not knocking him but he is a developmental player and you can tell that a mile off.

Don't forget he also lost his Dad recently along with recent injuries.
Hopefully he will produce soon, but probably from the bench.
Hope Dembele gets a chance soon.

We need to see that player who burst onto the scene at Bristol.

He is competing with Rhodes imo . Replacing Kouassi doesn’t work.

Problem is Rhodes on current form is undroppable .

Can't believe people think the game turned because Kouassi went off. Barnsley would have put pressure on us regardless. The reason we were under pressure was the inability to keep the ball in the middle of the park.

Lavery wasn't great but completely get why Kouassi was subbed and don't blame Critchley for that.

If you could ask the Barnsley and Reading defenders who’d they rather be up against, they’d laugh at the question. The difference in all round impact on our team performance is night & day.

Rhodes is obviously a nailed on starter, hope he stays fit! It's then a matter of who fits best with him, Kouassi at the moment seems to be the preferred option as he brings something different. We've got Joseph to come back, sometime this season, hopefully! And it will be interesting to see how and where he fits in.

Lavery is coming back from injury, but does he fit with Rhodes? Then there's Beesley, who for me is nothing more than a squad player, unfortunately, I'm not sure he's quite good enough. At least we've got some options, but we could be very exposed if we start picking up injuries to certain players. Please wrap Rhodes in cotton wool 😉

He was subbed, because we’re playing on Tuesday and he’s still gaining match fitness.

Kouassi is a completely different player to Lavery. Lavery will run the back 4 and chase balls down and create chances for himself similar to what Yates use to do. He already scored this season from that very same thing and nearly got another yesterday from it. Kouassi literally jogged the back line apart from a handful of times but we never put there back line under any pressure which is something we relied on Yates to do alot. It was effectively defending from the front and stopped teams playing out.

Lavery will come good, but every striker we have all offer completely different options for different games bar Beesley. I'm not convinced with him but time will tell considering he also had a very long spell injured.

Judging a player from 1 performance is wrong, some players start off like a house on fire then fizzle out and some take time to blend in. I'm not a fan of Critchleys new formation which ultimately got him sacked from QPR but unless we start turning on the team (please don't) then we have to deal with it.

Remember everyone waxing lyrical about him after pre season and the Burton game. The amount of comments about lumping on him to be league ones top scorer this season.
Only in football within the space of a month can hero go to zero.
For what it's worth I think he'll easily get into the high teens this season. UTMP.

I just can't see him ever getting any better and at the moment he is terrible. I get it he's a nice lad and you want him to be better but that dummy where he tried to flick it past his defender and run onto it sums him up. It was hilarious how slow he is. He can't beat a man, he gets pushed over far too easily. If he's in a race to get to the ball he loses every time. His finishing has gone to shit too. I get it he's injury prone, not up to fitness etc. Still I think he's not going to make it even at L1.

In fairness I think it was quite a tough game to come in to on Saturday. Never easy away from home hanging on to a lead and I do wonder if he was the right man for the job having only just come back from injury. We need him to come on when we have a decent lead so he can play without pressure.

There were several of us at the game and he was ranked as one of our best players by all. He won a lot in the air; held the ball up well and put in a very hard shift. Did you actually go to the game?

No but watched on the telly. I dispute the fact he held the ball up well but agree that he put in a shift. Just thought he looked ineffective but at the same time acknowledge he had a hand in the penalty.

He seems to have lost the pace that he had when he first played for us, whether that is through injury, weight gain or
because he appeared fast because he was making runs in the box, and the defenders were not going with him.
Maybe he has always been average with pace and just looked quick alongside Madine.
There have been a couple of occasions this season where he pushed the ball in front of himself to run onto and the
defender has won the foot race quite easily. In fact both times he gave up when he realised that he didn't have the
speed.

He isn't that old and I doubt if it is the usual over 30's footballer's condition of the legs going. But he obviously
is not pushing his hamstring for fear of it going again.

He'll be a good player again if he can stay fit, it's as simple as that IMO. Some people seem to think footballers are machines - they're not, and a small drop in confidence or in fitness or sharpness, or any small aspect of their game can be the difference between them doing great and looking completely off the pace.

100% agree...

Constructive criticism is fair enough but people are killing him.
Just as they do with any player who is out of form, then when like CJ or Hubby (last season) or whoever the whipping boy is, Beesley recently play well or get a goal or two then it's a 180° turn.
As you say, support our team.

It seems to me that the squad are very much together, pulling as one.....It's about time ALL our supporters got behind EVERY player, not just this week's favourite.

The more games Kouassi gets the better he’ll become. I’m afraid I would choose him over Lavery for the team. When Joseph is fit it will be harder for Lavery.
