Shrewsbury v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 02.03.24

Replace 'generally' with the word 'utterly', and I think you've pretty much hit the nail on the head there ...
It's a shame as I really like him as a character, but I'd much rather he kept it simple if he's going to keep pumping balls into touch.

Three points is three points regardless of how many times we gave the ball away and played backpass

Dembele is a class above, and after today's performance, I have no doubt Critch will start him on the bench against Portsmouth

Critchley will be furious with the second goal. He loves a 1-0 almost as much as a 0-0.
Does Dembele want to be selected for the next game - or not!?!?

If he carries on at this rate - he can expect to find his luggage ready and packed for an immediate return to France first thing tomorrow morning, with a reminder to shut the door on his way out ...

OK, so let's start with the negatives. CJ and Lavery were awful, Norburn not much better.

Other than that it was a controlled performance, a deserved win and with other results being fairly kind, the last 7 days have meant we're still in the mix. Dembele was my MOTM but I also thought Coulson and Byers did well.

Next week will be a big ask but we have proven we can match the better teams. Having Rhodes back is a major plus. My wine will taste a little sweeter tonight and I hope that goes for the 800+ Seasiders who made the trip, I'm delighted you got to celebrate 3pts on the road.

I think you're being a little harsh. Critch has gone back to the team that started against Bolton except CJ for Gabriel.
We were poor on Tuesday with the a couple of enforced changes which have now been reversed.
Lets be honest you'd probably still moan if he picked Messi. 😉
What did I tell you. We need to swap Gabriel for CJ, then it's 2 from 3 out of Rhodes/Beesley/Joseph.
I accept that Norburn is "back pass Ollie" but everyone needs/has one. Coulson is improving every match and Byers would be a good addition. So today's starting line-up isn't far off our currently best eleven.
As for Kaddy, break the bank for him.

In seven days, we’ve beaten a good team, a crap team and lost to a top half one.

We did well today and the result really means alot. It’s certainly made this pleasant Saturday even better!

I think Byers should warm into the team at the right time. Marv and Pennington had a good game. Think we could’ve got one more.

Norburn has had a shocker as has CJ be good to see Gabriel and Rhodes on
So whipping boy (Norburn) stats were
Accurate passes 41/50 82%
Touches 56
Ground duels won 2/3
Aerial duels won 2/2
Dispossessed 0
Golden boy Byers
Accurate passes 48/58 83%
Touches 73
Ground duels won 7/9
Aerial duels won 1/2
Dispossessed 1

Just for comparison purposes and obviously no "effectiveness" stats.
I'm not looking at CJs stats except he only had 33 touches in 68 mins.

I saw what I saw

At the risk of maybe lowering the tone a little, I think the great Alex Ferguson (who originally coined the phrase) opted for the rather more prosaic option of "bum", rather than "backside".

Still, each to their own, I guess ...
I like to keep it a little different from time to time.

I saw what I saw
I'm not a big Norburn fan but the Byers/Norburn partnership is developing. I had a bit of Shrews commentary on and they were (possibly biased as an ex-player) but nevertheless complimentary about him (and very complimentary about us overall).
With the greatest respect when you take against someone you lose a bit of objectivity (Critchley/Sadler/***). I think you should reinvent yourself as "curmudgeonlyseasider".

What I will say for Norburn is that he played better than he did on Tuesday. Still miles off being good enough, he's just too slow.

Unfortunately I think we are still a, 'we should be beating teams like..' sort of fanbase. Not sure where this comes from. (Maybe it's the reverse effect of the 'we shouldn't be putting four past Bolton/Pompey' mindset.)

Norburn played well. I have no idea what people on this forum are watching.

Coulson and Ekpiteta fight for MOTM. Definitely Coulsens best game for us.

Those stats for Norburn don't tell anything like the whole story, and I'm not convinced they are accurate. He was dispossessed at least three times. He frequently pulled out of challenges, and his forward passes were generally astray. A defensive midfielder who only attempts three challenges over 101 minutes, he gets on the ball every two minutes. It's plnot just his performance being not very good, he brings the whole team down to his level. Please Mr critchley leave him out of the team and put Morgan in with Byers.

If Norburn played bad, CJ was embarrassing and should never ever play for us again.

Just got back, parked behind the stand, straight out and on the road, brilliant.
Shrewsbury were bloody awful, fair play to fans who want to turn up and watch that every week.
Ekpiteta and Coulson top performances, Dembele scored one made one magic little fella. Mentions for Byers and Pennington.
Negatives, what does CJ bring to the party ? Stands on the halfway line not showing for anything, not making runs behind the full back. Lavery unable to hold the ball up and bring other players into it.
Critch applauded but no fist pump, maybe not happy with the " we've had a shot " and " how shit must you be we're winning away " chants.

Those chants are pathetic btw. Worst chants in football.

Morgan is injured.
We had a Norburn/Byers combo against P'boro (a), Bolton and Shrewsbury. Hmm? 🤔

I'm glad he heard them, they travel all around England and they were right to let him know.

its quite obvious the byers is now that central pivot, so why Norburn is playing is an absolute mystery to me. morgan, carey virtue, all all better. we are literally playing a man down when Norburn is on the pitch.
and what your beloved CJ? Does that make us two down on the pitch?

Perhaps it's the player mentioned at the end of the above post who should select the team-mate he'd like playing alongside him? Unless, that is, management step in and decide otherwise, by announcing: "Sorry, everyone, Byers can't be choosers ..."

Usual long winded shite with a very welcome twist - I went away and we won!!!
Good read and spot on about CJ, he looks utterly lost and we almost played a man short for the time he was on the pitch. Not showing for the ball, not making runs in behind and unable to keep possession when he got it. Standing on the half way line like a lost soul with no idea of what was expected of him, I felt sorry for him and wanted him to be put out of his misery.
