Southport v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 02.07.22

Poor 2nd half tbh, Tharme did well although against players he will know well, see what he is like against a step up in opponent, Apter and Carey definitely the 2 stand outs of the match, good run out for the lads though

2nd half was pretty flat and non eventful, but plenty of good stuff to see in the first half. Liked the look of Carey & Apter. Thought Dale had some good touches here and there too. Nice to see a win and a decent run out.

First half looked good. Good movement, everyone keen to accept the ball and to use it well. If that half was cheese then the second half was chalk: passes going astray, crosses to no-one, fumbling in defence. And that was from what I would expect to be largely the first team.

Still, these are friendlies so roll on the next one.

If the first half team played the second half team it would be one way traffic.
Owen Dale worked hard I thought. Reece James awful passing ability-maybe because of a dry slow running pitch. Bowler could have slaughtered them on form. Pity he wasn’t on form. Big Marv faultless. No right back choice out there. Apter was impressive but only uses his right foot to piss on. Tharme not championship quality.
That said, it was only the first pre season game after 2 weeks training.
Need a right back signing wearing the new kit Monday.

Tharme was playing out of position !

first half looked very good, lots of movement pulling the southport defence and midfield all over the place, Yates looks up for it, bez had a decent 45, Cj was a bit off the boil but given a bit of freedom to roam still created some problems. Stand outs were Carey and Apter, Apters really an attacker so getting a run out at right back and doing well is something, particularly being left footed. Connolly had a good 45 in the middle.

second half much more static, played a lot more long balls, Tharme looks decent, thorniley didnt disapoint.

interesting start my guess would be the first 45 was more how we are going to play, and if it is we could be in for something quite good this season. I know its only southport lets see how it is next game.

Don't take too much from this game.

All about fitness. Hard to take individual positives just because it's a non league team who are at the same prep level of fitness. Even if it's Leeds you shouldn't take too much from it.

A day out for fans, not much more.

All our creative players,Carey, Keshi and Apter played 1st half. No service at all to the front men 2nd half. I still believe we need at least one more absolute quality midfield creator.

The first half was excellent, whenever we get the ball, we always try to get it forwards and scored two good goals and the second half was dire with too many misplaced passes but it was a good day out and I would like to give a big shout out to the Southport FC tannoy that has been spot on and put the troublemakers in their place, with most tannoys at clubs way higher than Southport being very robot-like but today she certainly hasn’t minced any words today, fair play to the tannoy today, roll on Leeds UTMP! 🍊

First half, Keogh was excellent – his reading of the game is top drawer. Sonny Carey deserves praise too- very composed and some great attacking play from him. Casey looked assured at CB and Callum Connolly controlled midfield from deep. Connelly is looking more and more a very astute signing.

Rob Apter looks a good player – great first touch and always looking to go on the attack. Some of his early decision making was off but he’ll improve and looks an exciting prospect. Played out of position today.

Thought Owen Dale looked good when he came on, as did Marvin.Too early to judge Doug Thame, though his throw-ins were good.

Gary Madine played well – always has when I’ve seen him. Good football brain – rarely see him lose the ball and his thoughts are usually a few seconds ahead of the defenders marking him.

Jordan Thorniley played well apart from one hooked crossfield ball. In the main, his positioning was excellent and most of his distribution was on the money.

Josh and Keshi looked out of sorts – don’t know why – hopefully they‘ll both be with us this season.

Good to see Matty Virtue back – some of his touches were brilliant and he’s a player that has both vision to create scoring opportunities and score a few himself – really hope he avoids injury this season as he has the attributes to be a top player for us.

Good analysis MrJ.

A few thoughts...
* First half formation 4-3-3 worked, second half formation 4-4-2 didn't
* Carey could be a real gem for us and provides the quality in the final third that we have been severely lacking
* Impressed with Apter who didn't put a foot wrong, even though he was playing out of position

Agree with all of that
Who would have thought last season that our best midfield selection may be
Connolly, Virtue, Carey
P. S I still do not think Connolly is a CB.

Good first half, Crap second half . Reece James did nothing to make me think he is good enough for the championship. On to Thursday now and see what team he puts out against what should be a decent Leeds side .
I actually think the game ended as a spectacle after the 10 minute break. Although in the scheme of football crowd violence is was pretty low down the pecking order it was still painful to watch and the whole atmosphere within the stadium seemed to change after the restart.

Well am back now and the first half was decent.

I even said there's no way now this will end the same as last season. 😔

But the 2nd half was utter dog shite, friendly or not. No quality. Lavery the usual headless chicken hes become recently. Reece James passing was dire a good few times. Bowler looked way off it. Very poor finishing from all shooters. Really poor to not really trouble Southport too much 2nd half.

That incident was quite funny with the lads breaking through the barrier.

The Southport 'Ultras' aka some young whipersnapers had moved from the stand behind the goal to taunt pool fans all the way round and up close giving it the wanker signs etc, they soon got a shock when a few burst through the barriers and they ran away. A little lesson for them there. Looked like a full beer was thrown too. They shouldn't have gone through, it's a freindly and some youngsters giving it large doesn't warrant that. But I must admit I did find it funny, they specifically moved all that way to go and give pool fans shit and got the shock of their lives.

Mansford went over to calm things down.

Not sure why some people kept holding onto the ball when it went into the stand, weird behaviour from grown men imo when it was the ball for the game and players were waiting.

Stockport are a league 2 team, not non league.

I think it's naive to try to construe much if anything from the first pre season game. Apart from finding out who is injured. Avoiding injury seemed the prime objective.

Apter standing out for instance. Southport are at the level Apter was playing at last season. He's git an opportunity to impress, which he did, but I can't see him being near the first XI. The Championship is like a different sport altogether.
