Southport v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 02.07.22

Southport wouldn't have scored if they had played from now till doomsday. Whether that's because they are utter rubbish and doomed to failure from whatever division they are in. Or because our defence looked competent and ready to repel all boarders as the new season approaches. I like to think the latter.

I think it's naive to try to construe much if anything from the first pre season game. Apart from finding out who is injured. Avoiding injury seemed the prime objective.

Apter standing out for instance. Southport are at the level Apter was playing at last season. He's git an opportunity to impress, which he did, but I can't see him being near the first XI. The Championship is like a different sport altogether.
Equate that with Bowlers performance.

Keshi and Carey impressed me most. Look like things can happen when they get the ball. Apter did well and good he is under 21. Bez and CJ did well and Keogh class. Non of our central strikers looked good. James looks favorite to miss the 25man squad.

Agree with all of that
Who would have thought last season that our best midfield selection may be
Connolly, Virtue, Carey
P. S I still do not think Connolly is a CB.
If Virtue is in a best midfield 3 this season then we are in a world of bother...he was barely good enough for league 1 and looks slow and off the pace every game he plays for us ...get him out on loan ...Connolly has a great attitude and does a job but I think he should get a shot at his strongest position of centre half (possibly in a back 3) Carey is absolute quality and will be a star this season if not injured. I honestly think he could be our most valuable player this time next year

Agree to differ on Virtue he is still finding his feet in the team.
Connolly would struggle to shift current cb's and I like his tenacity as defensive mid plus he is a goal threat and he is definitely growing in that role, given straight choice I would now prefer him to Wintle who many were clamouring to sign
Totally agree on Carey, he is one of the two attacking midfielders we need.
