Southport v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread

20th century or not, I'm not a fan of the keeper and defenders pissing about with the ball from a goal kick. It just invites pressure and the ball is invariably hoofed up the pitch within 10 seconds anyway (if the defending team still has possession for that long).
O
I only watched the second half, which was him. Wasn’t aware the keepers were different each half
Flatters played the whole game

Been busy all day so only watching it now after 20 mins observations 3-4-3 formation is what I see but susceptible for ball over the top.

Wasn't 343 from what I could see
I remember a quote from Sean Dyce the other week why he persists with 4-4-2 and not other so called the In formations and his reply was you can freeze 'Any' game and look where the players are stood and it's basically they are in a 4-4-2.

In the second half I thought that Kaikai, Anderson, and Yates linked up together very well.
I think that on paper is probably our best 3 in forward positions, all 3 can finish, just important to stay fit. Kaikai is a very very good player let's hope his injury is behind him, Larry played him for 8 weeks with the injury which proves stupid as he missed a big part of the season. the break although awful will have done him good. Utmp !!

Watched it tonight & initially thought I was going to turn it off as we couldn't tell who most of the players were or even see the ball half of the time. But in spite of all that the passing & movement was noticeable & we did actually enjoy it. Whilst it was only Southport what we saw was encouraging.

Sounds like it was to do with software problems according to Scrafters twitter... sure I remember reading a few issues on the Fleetwood stream one year!
Always going to have some issues. Just thought they might have a Scoreboard, a clock running and maybe some commentary.
I’d love to help out if I could on the live streams as I ran the FTFC ones for their FA Youth Cup matches against Watford & Millwall, and the streams during pre-season.
For me the overlays and commentary / audio makes the stream 10x better.

I thought Nottingham looked good. Unfortunately Nottingham and Ekpeteta both right side centre back. I prefer Husband at LB so think we need a classy CB for the left side.

Hmmm? Could only cope with about 10 minutes of what was probably the start of the second half as the camera wasn’t moving, and it looked a bit of a car crash to be honest.
Passing it around at the back and lost it or hoofed it eventually every time. Some hospital balls all over the pitch and it looked more like pinball than the beautiful game.
It probably got better? It is just the start of the journey and this is hopefully anyway not the finished article.
Do I really want to be watching that in a howling gale, of which there are plenty, at Bloomfield Road? Well I don’t think my ticker would take it.
I know this puts me in the 20th Century at best, and it could perhaps end up being a very special season if it comes off, but I am not sold on it yet. I hope we don’t end up learning the hard way that this is a difficult trick to pull off with League One players.

Thorniley should be the classy LCB if Massive fans are to believe?
We’ve certainly got options up front. Maybe, just maybe this is when Joelinho finally proves he’s a footballer?

Not sure some were watching the same stream as me because I thought the passing and movement was pretty good throughout, especially considering it’s the first game in 5 months and the first time most of these have played together (even in training they’ve largely been playing in groups of 5 and not as a full squad).
A clear and obvious tactic was at play in each half - the first being possession based and the second being to hit quickly on a counter attack. High pressing was used throughout and it’s worked well.
I don’t think the players had as much impact on how we played in either half - I think it was very much a tactical choice. Critchley doesn’t need ‘results’ against Southport - he did however need to get the team playing in certain scenarios and I think that’s what we saw.
I think the Goalkeeper and defence looking to play out from the back and inviting pressure on to them was very much deliberate and also necessary as its a part of the modern game a lot of players at this level just haven’t experienced - they didn’t look 100% comfortable with it just yet but that’s why they need to do it in friendlies.

Today was never about going to Southport and winning the game. It was a training exercise and as for the forwards those we needed to maybe learn to play a new way did so in the first half and those who needed to learn to play together did so in the second.

I think we’ll see this over the next 2/3 friendlies and then later in pre-season we may see more of the game plans.

Agree it looked to be running two game plan scenarios in either half. Put the front three from the second half into the first half team and we could play either scenario to great effect though.

Agree about the playing out from the back. We struggled badly with it at times and a good side would have punished us. Lots of work to do on that, including some in the transfer market.

Not done Liverpool any harm playing that way, English European and World champions in the same year.

Tbf to Liverpool, I think their keeper and defenders might be better on the ball than our league one lads. 😉

Imo, it just invites unnecessary pressure from a goal kick. You're right about it being our first friendly etc, but I feel the same when I see teams in the Champions League do it.

I think the opposition we will face will be a little shy of the ability of Barcelona

They only need to chase us down, so it doesn't matter if they have the ability of the Dog and Duck if we willingly give them possession in our area from a goal kick

Just for the record the u/18 teams I have watched over the last few seasons nearly always play it out from the back so it is starting to be ingrained in players that that's the way to play.

So hoof it and give them possession whole game? Much rather us play the beautiful game we will get better at it as time moves on.
