Sports teachers at school

i was having a drink with Stu Robinson only last week, i played at Fleetwood in those days
I played for Fleetwood U18's when I was a lad and Stu was our coach. He certainly coached us in drinking as much as playing but we loved it and he made us train so hard. Just running and running till you were sick.

Happy Days indeed, I had David Evans for maths too. By the way following on from this I googled Walter and he did indeed make one first team appearance for United in 1955 but was sold to Chesterfield the following season. What years were you at St Aidans mate?
76-81....

And I still work at the same place in FY6 as where you met your Missus! 😜

Yes i do , Mr Smith was a top guy , he was looking after the under 15's Town team in the years 1965/66 , good team we had then . Also knew his family very well , was bestman at one of his daughters wedding .
Didn’t he also become a scout for the nobbers , he sent a couple of lads from Palatine there, also I know one of his daughters was called Wendy .

During my time at St. George’s - 1964-1969.
Keith Foster (later Head at St. Wilfrid's), David Gregson, David Wraith and Max Denham (later Head at Montgomery)

At Palatine we had Dave Durie - proof that good players do not necessarily make good managers. We also had Tony New for cricket who played for Great Ecclestone, top coach and lovely fella.
Our younger element won’t recognise that Dave Durie was in the 53 team and played lots of first team games. Always came to palatine on his bike, obviously not the same money being payed to players back then. He flagged me twice for a foul throw when he was running the line in a school game, he said to me “think we need some practice on that”.
Tony New as you say was a great teacher, also took me for maths

My sports teacher at school in Harrogate was called Mike Knowles and he really fancied himself with his motor bike and leathers capped off with a bangers and mash. I did not like him much and about 5 years after leaving school i was playing for a team of rozzers in west yorkshire not long after the miners strike against Pontefract labour club and he happened to be playing for them. Now as you can imagine that there was not much love between the two sides and Mr Knowles thought he could intimidate me as my former teacher but i had somewhat bulked up after school and could take care of myself. Early in the first half he tried to knobble me but i evaded him but a few minutes later there was a 50/50 ball and i went through him and sent him flying, as i got up i laughed as he was moaning and groaning on the deck and having a team of rozzers behind you does help but Mr Knowles never came near me again.
Ah yes the miners' strike. Good overtime was it? Did you get someone to sow your ID numbers back on to your uniform or did you do it yourself?

Yeah. St Mary's. Did he play Rugby Union for Blackpool. He wasn't really a football fan but was by no means the worst of the PE Teachers there, when I started in 1981 it was Rugby first and Football came a poor second. There was a couple of old St Joe's PE Teachers still hanging in there, who had no interest at all in football, thankfully they retired a year or so later.
Remember him too, I started St Joe's in the 70s and remember some very dodgy Christian Brothers too before him

Anyone remember Norman Smith & Mr Grice from Palatine ?
Mr Smith was a great sports teacher and his daughters weren’t too bad either!
My mate Russ Perkins was good at most sports and Norman lent him a school javelin so he could practise with it in the park!
Cant imagine that happening these days!
Reg Moore at Palatine was good too

The older element will recognise that Dave Durie wasn't in the 53 team

Arthur was a great bloke and along with John Edwards were the 2 teachers I most respected.
Yes, Arthur was a great bloke. Really helped my rehabilitation after I dislocated my knee in a collision with Boris Bradley during a football match.
The complete opposite was the useless Frank Hessey, who I recall was once caught canoodling with a dinner lady in the cricket pavilion

Well, we had Tony Green at Hodgson, though he was never involved in the football or PE, he taught maths.

It's funny looking back but people had no idea how good he was, it was just "oh yeah, Mr Green used to play for Blackpool". I think kids assumed that cause he was a teacher now and Blackpool had been a lower league team for about 30 years that he was a lower league journeyman type. Since nobody supported Blackpool and there was no internet then they had no idea that he was one of the most talented players of his generation.

If he hadn't been injured it's likely he'd have been a legend of the game, yet there he was screaming about algebra in a thick Scottish accent. Maths was divided into groups based on students abilities and he always got assigned set 5 or 6 - the kids that had no interest in learning, so there was always a lot of shouting coming from his classroom.

Boris was great footballer

At St Georges 80 - 85 we had Bob Saunders and Jim Clayton. Both apparently very good Semi pro (?) players for Morecambe I believe.
Saunders had been there a while and left in 85 to go and work for the Army in Germany.
Clayton was still there when my daughter started in 2010 !!!
Saunders was most pupils favourite and just one of the people in life that everyone liked. He also managed our footy teams in similar fashion and just let us play, which worked as we won the league 3 times, Harry Johnston Cup (84) and Lancs semis twice.

Andy Middlemass at Collegiate 1974-79. Played hockey with him a few times for Blackpool and it was always awkward whether to call him Sir or Andy. Good guy.
He was at St Mary's as well. Used to tell the Head if he saw you smoking. Middlegrass we called him. Another PE teacher non too keen on football 🤨

Not naming names because I don't think the poor lad is with us any more, I went to Highfield and the person in question would set us off ie football then hop it off sharpish to the Highfield pub coming back 45mins later red faced and stinking of booze.
I know who you mean & he’s not with us. After my time but I met him in the Mere Park. Couldn’t believe he actually was a teacher 😳

Did not Hessey get locked up for misappropriation funds!

Collegiate in the 1980’s.
There was Mr Rhodes who was ok if your were good at sport or in his opinion tried your best, otherwise he would make your like hell! Fortunately for me I was in his opinion a trier and got off lightly
And Mr Bashford, all I remember about him was bad skin and him monitoring the showers!!
