Texas Shootings

It is indeed a terrible terrible act and I obviously feel for the poor families involved.

However, am I the only one who is not as sensitive to this sort of thing in the US anymore, as it seems/does happen all the time?

- I tend to think "that they will just never learn and oh it has happened again."

At least the bstrd is dead, but then again having him suffer continually for fifty plus years would also be appropriate.

RIP.

The current generation won’t learn. It’s ingrained in their psyche that gun ownership is necessary. They also have a very unhealthy relationship with the fear of violence that encourages the view that it’s important to be armed to protect yourself.

It’s not so long ago that Texas voted for ‘open carry’ - that is the right to openly carry a legal gun in public places.

I also worked with a colleague from Houston, who was a fervent gun owner and pro-gun. I asked him about open carry and he said he would never do it because he felt it made him more likely to be targeted by a lone wolf type shooter. I had started to think that was at least ‘sensible’ before he added ‘but I’ll always carry a knife’. This is not someone from a deprived neighbourhood or involved in gangs etc. but a university educated professional worker in a well paid job.

It’s endemic in the country and when you combine easy access to weapons with social structure that highly polarises ‘winners and losers’ these things will keep happening.

How on earth does an 18 year old afford to buy an assault rifle and afford to drive a truck which he crashed before the shooting. A shocking event which should change things in the USA, but of course it won’t.

Terrible tragic news yet again from a country that has had more mass shootings this year than days so far! This problem will never be resolved even if the American Constitution is changed, it is far too ingrained in their society with far too many firearms held by millions of citizens.

Yep, especially when the Texan Governor thinks that the problem isn't guns but 'hearts without God'.

4300 children died in 2020 from gunshot injuries - the highest cause of death (i.e. your child is more likely to be shot and killed than any other cause of child death). That is crazy.
43000 adults died from gunshot injuries in the same year.
And yet as a few Americans have said, tears will be shed, kind words will be spoken and then they will not change a single thing.

I was about to type something similar. I saw a kid in 2015 go into what is pretty much a big Asda in New Hampshire. Buy an automatic gun and over 300 rounds. He couldn't have fit the stereotypical mould better if he tried.

What does he even need an automatic gun for? Let alone 300 rounds.

Zero checks and he had no idea how to use it, pretty obvious from watching on.

Those figures are incredible, and not in a good way!!!!!

I'm sorry to ask, but when will the next mass shooting be? It seems to be in the psyche of the population. I don't think they will ever learn.

When you consider that there are places in Europe, Switzerland for example, where people carry guns, but little of the same thing happens, it makes one wonder where the USA have gone wrong.

May all the victims Rest in Peace!!!.

There's a whole culture around 'Everyday Carry' in the US, it's bizarre, they load up like they're frontiersman as they drive to McDonalds in the Suburban.

I'm guessing there's a lot of polo shirts tucked in to casual slacks.

This fellas gone for the combat pants and shiny shoes as he takes the dangerous lift ride from the car park to his office.

They bang on about their rights to bear arms but never a whimper about their responsibilities. The two should never be separated. Without accepting your responsibilities you should have no rights and that should apply throughout society.

They went wrong partly by not being Swiss.

Biden is right to point out that this doesn't happen with the same regularity anywhere else. Think we all know the answer and it's about time someone stood up to the gun lobby.

Like I keep saying, the Americans are insane, how the hell have they achieved such an influence over other people?

Obama really tried didn't he. I remember watching him make a very emotional speech about it and he was clearly very moved but also very frustrated. How can the gun lobby be so powerful? It's one awful tragedy after another 😢

They're not that expensive really, about $1,000 for the rifle, less for a used or really basic one.

It's in the constitution.

A gun has only 1 purpose…how a supposed civilised society accept them as an everyday item is beyond me..
The yanks will bang on about how terrible and tragic it is…then change nothing and it will happen again and again…

I have debated this with people in the US previously and it has gone like this many times …..

USA - we have the right to bare arms!
ME - Why?
USA - the constitution allows for it!
Me - change it then?
USA - we cannot change the constitution!
ME - which bit allows you to bare arms?
USA - the second amendment!
Me - so you can amend the constitution?
USA - no we cannot!
Me - well you have previously?
USA - no we haven’t?
Me - so why is it called the second amendment?
USA - eeeerrrrrrrrrr

😳 it will never change!

The Second Amendment was based on the right to keep and bear arms in English common law and was influenced by the English Bill of Rights of 1689. Sir William Blackstone described this right as an auxiliary right, supporting the natural rights of self-defense and resistance to oppression, and the civic duty to act in concert in defense of the state.[12] Any labels of rights as auxiliary must be viewed in the context of the inherent purpose of a Bill of Rights, which is to empower a group with the ability to achieve a mutually desired outcome, and not to necessarily enumerate or rank the importance of rights. While both James Monroe and John Adams supported the Constitution being ratified, its most influential framer was James Madison. In Federalist No. 46, Madison wrote how a federal army could be kept in check by state militias, "a standing army ... would be opposed [by] a militia."

Self defence and as part of a militia.

Surely to God that the Americans will mass protest to get the law about firearms changed

I mean a big protest way bigger then the ones for Flyod, 19 little innocent children in Heaven & 19 families devastated for the rest of their lives

The problem is that it takes 3/4 of states to ratify the amendment for it to take effect, and that's never going to happen.

Are you seriously trying to compare the Americans attitudes between these two incidents?

Shocked, saddened but not surprised. Imagine kissing your 8 year old goodbye at their school with the thought that they may be next. What sort of society is that.

What the US needs is a Martin Luther King, a charismatic leader who can galvanise the majority to take on the vested interests represented by the NRA. My Twitter feed is full of Biden, Harris, Obama, Clinton, and many, many decent Democrats and a few out of step Republicans, some of the speeches make you well up. The GOP just opposes anything, even a mental health check before being allowed to purchase a firearm. Their murder rate by gunshot is something like 120X the UK, it beats any developed country by a street, and yet guns are more important than Kiddies lives. How dare they call themselves a civilised country? I f a country does not put its kids lives above all else, what hope is there?

No you didn't. Commercial sale of automatic weapons has been federally banned since 1986.

New Hampshire has just about the laxest gun laws in the US, yet hasn't had a mass shooting since 1984 and has one of the lowest murder rates in the US.

Its almost like there might be other factors involved in crime than access to legal firearms...

300 rounds is a reasonable afternoon at the range. Not sure why you think that is in any way sensational. My FAC allows me to buy 1,000 rounds of .22LR here in the UK. It is about 20% cheaper to buy 1 box of 1,000 rather than 10 boxes of 100.

No. They see gun ownership as some twisted aspect of freedom, thinking they're frontiersmen shooting pesky injuns.

People like Martin Luther King, black or white, are very few and far between I'm afraid and I can't see one crop up any time soon.

👏👏

Can you imagine guns being as prevalent in the UK? It makes me shudder, I recall my drinking days in the late 80s and 90s at chucking out when everyone went for a taxi at the same time, scraps galore. If guns were everywhere it would have been carnage. Nothing good comes from guns, too any Americans see arming teachers as a solution, warped sense of values.
