The Summer Transfer thread - Part 1.

Apparently we look into a players background to see if they are the right " fit " for the squad and club.
Here's a thought, let's sign some spiteful, horrible bastards who can play a bit and have a winning mentality. We have too many nice people in and around the squad and I include manager/coaches in that.
For right fit read nodding dogs like the 2 assts.

If we're also looking at new faces at this time, I would be tempted to bid for Fankaty Dabo at Forest green, he seemed to be handy last season at Coventry, and is worth a punt in league one, and since everyone seems to want a new defensive mid instead of Connolly, I would try and get Michael Rosiak in on loan from Arsenal as he's meant to be highly rated there.
Would that be the Fankaty Dabo that Troy Deeney said this about?

"Dabo was awful again and I've told him. He won't be playing on Tuesday.
"He's not been good enough for five, six, seven, eight, nine weeks now. Why do you think he was dropped at the start? I've told him in front of everyone that six months ago he had a kick to go to the Premier League, now he wouldn't get a game in the National League.

"He's faster than anybody and on pure ability but he gets ran every game, he never makes a tackle, and every time the ball comes to him he looks like he kicks it with his shin pads."

Wintle anyone?
Not sure if he's been involved much at Cardiff of late, don't know how old he is or whether he'd accept dropping down, but thought he was an unsung hero for us in the engine room
Very good player in his time here wasn’t he.very slim chance of us signing him though

Good call. He was a decent player here (Sky Blues). His confidence suffered when his penalty went over Luton’s bar at Wembley but a good player at Third Division level

Could be talking about Hamilton.🤣

9/10 should go IMO. Critchley has to improve on this squad and he will be under pressure to achieve this. How much money we spend will determine the quality we get in. Should be interesting.
We got some cracking loan players in last season, some may sign, who probably were relatively cheap as percentage of wages. We also have Apter and hopefully one or two more youth prospects. So we should be aiming for the best we can afford to fill the gaps.

Looking at the non loan players in our squad makes depressing reading. Every position needs freshening up imo. Who of them regularly puts an 8 out of 10 performance in every week? The only one who gets near is Grimshaw. Ekpiteta has not reached his 1st season championship heights. Let him go. Is Husband going to be better next season? No he’s not. So I’d release. Casey squad player. Hamilton nowhere near good enough. Connolly gone backwards in form. Needs to move on. Lyon’s gone backwards but I’d probably keep. Lavery I’d move on. Joseph not good enough for top league 1 or championship. Carey I would have said move on earlier in the season but he finished on an upward curve so I’d give him another year. Morgan squad player. Norburn added nothing in midfield. Probably stuck with him but I’d see if we could cut our losses and move him on. Virtue squad player. Beesley works so hard but is not good enough to start. Need better quality all over but especially up front. Pennington ok..but not great. I'd keep him though. Trouble is our supercoach believes the deadest of deadwood Hamilton deserved a new long term contract so what hope have we got of moving on the lesser deadwood?

I’ve seen some analysis that says we only scored 3 goals from corners (directly or within 15 seconds) and at 5% of non penalty goals that is bottom in the division. A set piece specialist for the transfer list please
Without wishing to put a burden on young shoulders, Jack Moore was always the set piece specialist for the Youth team. He scored a few direct from free kicks.

According to Wikipedia he is out of contract this summer. Is he likely to be offered a new one do you think?

A couple of names who are on free’s come to mind, Sean Ragget 31yrs 6’5” could be what we want experienced CB. Also Michael Smith 31yrs 6’3” CF always scored goals this division at Sheff Wed at moment. We need some experience if 8/9 players are to come in.
Blimey Charlie. Going for the cultured approach? If that’s the style you may as well play Kouassi. Lost faith totally in Critch when he persevered with utter nonsense like Connolly and Lyons as left wing backs. Truly bizarre

We don’t sign players like Wintle or Dembele on a permanent anymore - as we once did with, say, Hills or Hoolahan - rather we allow our own prospects to languish on the fringe, then simply leave like Lambert, Thomason and Charles, etc. Will Jack Moore be one of the next to be released in that manner? What’s going to change?

The third division has always required big, dominant defenders to act as a rock against opponents while the forward players do their work. When Marv leaves we’ll be challenged in that regard. I’m thinking back to the likes of Sean Dyche and Nicky Law at Cheaterfield who often frustrated us, or our own diamonds Barker and Evatt. You just know already, that under Cheesley we’ll be struggling in this department once again.

Husband should be retained on a 1+1 contract as club captain and reserve left back/sub. All the others like Virtue, Connolly, Lavery, et al, released. We should be more concerned with shrewd permanent signings than loanees, while giving our own young prospects a fair chance. Apter and Moore for starters.

Our priority must be another rapid player on the wing who can't tackle, cross a ball or trip over his own feet when passing, thus would be to have balance on either side.
Then you move to talented youngsters who would either be farmed out to the dog and duck in the northern 8th division to complete his apprenticeship or put in the development squad never to be seen again despite already showing what a good player he is in the 1st place .
Defenders, we need players who can pass 10 yards SIDEWAYS before lumping it up to a player no bigger than a leprechaun being marked by a giant.
Midfield, we need great passers who can spot a pass either backwards or sideways.
Forwards, will be asked what to do with a banjo and cow's arse and in the eventuality they can actually hit it will be discarded.

I think we're in for a great closed season👍🏻
Good morning Neil!

Absolutely you need them types in League 1. Against decent opposition we competed very well. Against the alehouse cloggers and anti football spoilers that make up 90% of L1 we struggled.

Just that I think we can’t throw the bathwater out with the baby etc. I would settle for that again next season
Which? If you mean the 18 clean sheets, I agree. If you mean the 8th place then no. Clean sheets are always welcome of course, but they don’t win games unless we score.

Our current squad now the loans have gone back is:

Goalkeepers:

Grimshaw
O'Donnell
Chapman

Defenders:

Connolly
Husband
Gabriel
Thompson
Pennington
Ekpiteta
Casey
Lyons
Sassi

Midfielders:

Norburn
Carey
Virtue
Apter
Morgan
Hamilton
Finnigan

Forwards:

Lavery
Beesley
Kouassi
Joseph

That's 20 outfield players plus 3 keepers. I would say for certain the following will leave or not offered a new contract

Grimmy (sold)
Connolly (Released)
Gabriel (sold)
Thompson (Released)
Ekpiteta (Refuses new contract)
Sassi (Loan)

Virtue (Released)
Finnigan (Loan)

Lavery (Released)

That's 9 players gone so 9 places to fill, Rhodes & Coulson would be a good start and Byers would be a great bit of business, add 3 loan players and we would need 3 more players.

Squad then:

Keepers:

O'Donnell
Chapman

Defenders:

Husband
Pennington
Casey
Lyons
(Coulson)

Midfielders:

Norburn
Carey
Apter
Morgan
Hamilton
(Byers)

Forwards:

Beesley
Kouassi
Joseph
(Rhodes)

Lyons could be out for some time still so defence will be a priority, if we can somehow keep Grimmy then that would be a real coup otherwise a number 1 keeper will be essential

We have no wingers other than Apter and I would see him playing in the Dembele role as we won't play with wingers. It is likely to be CJ and Coulson as wingbacks and a midfield 3 of Norburn, Carey and Apter, I have left Byers out as I don't think we will sign him, just hope we do, If we can then I would try and sell Norburn and look to get 2 more midfielders. Up top Rhodes and Beesley, If we don't get Rhodes then we will need at least one decent goalscorer, I don't see Joseph getting much game time so he may want to leave. Kouassi could feature more next season.

It's going to be down to the recruitment team to come up with the players that will fit Critchley's tactic. He isn't going anywhere, more's the pity, so we have to hope that he gets the players and we improve on this season. I think we will know by November where we are heading.

Do you know what ! I would agree with that ,when in competition. Save the nicey nicey for the community and PR stuff.
We are far too soft.

I'm comfortable with all of those out of contract going. Only Carey, Husband and Ekpiteta would be a loss given their involvements during 23/24 season. I fully expect Carey's option to be taken and possibly even a new extended deal. Husband is the other player I'd ideally like to keep and hopefully the club can reach an agreement. Marv is 50/50, he's been a good servant to the club and after an iffy start has been his usual reliable self. I do think we can replace him though, so I wouldn't break the bank to agree a deal as I get the feeling he's ready for a new challenge, I suspect he already has a got irons in the fire and wouldn't be shocked to see him sign for Charlton/Peterborough. The sooner BFC know who really wants to be at the club, the better, then the extent of our summer rebuild will be known and we can start to piece together a squad that can push on from a disappointing 8th position.

Would that be the Fankaty Dabo that Troy Deeney said this about?

"Dabo was awful again and I've told him. He won't be playing on Tuesday.

Sounds like a perfect fit. Remember what Leeds said about Crainey?

Just been on transfermarkt and this is the list of expiring contracts, ignore Dembele and Coulson as those are only the loans here expiring, Byers and Rhodes interestingly are available on a free this summer. I would activate the year on Husband and Connolly's contracts, release Chapman and O'Donnell, offer Ekpiteta and Lavery new contracts, and offer Rhodes and Byers permanents, not sure about Virtue
Connolly??? Are you mad?

We need to put some serious quality into the backbone of our squad. There are a number of players available, Does Critchley have a problem with players who are not “Yes Men” he needs to grow some balls he’s far to nice for me and likes players who “fit in” You’ve got Ronan Curtis who could be an out an out winger on a free. Surely he would be an asset to a match day squad of 18 players who you could influence a game changing decision. THIS IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE. It’s a game of football. Michael Smith a serious No9 been there a done it. Wake up smell the ** coffee. Sean Raggett 6’5” CB 31 years cryin out for some serious investment. There are other players we know who every man an his dog are after.. Portsmouth went out and spent their money and found their match winners. Those 3 players and 2 more would make a massive statement and could put some bums on seats. Many many more players are available who could be serious assets to a squad of 18 players. Simon are you in it to win it or to just take part. I’ve always backed you but time is running out. A couple of weeks ago a serious soccer pundit when asked about out potential said we lack that extra player who can turn a game and we have a soft underbelly. I have to say IMO that ain’t far wrong. The new stand and training ground will fall in significance to putting a team out every Saturday afternoon who could bring the club success. Over to you.

I disagree, 'fitting in' is hugely important in building team spirit. Without that you can have a world class side and get no where. Ask a Man U fan.
