The 'utility player'

When only one or two subs were permitted and squads were much smaller, there were players who specialised in playing as many positions as possible. It's a phrase you never hear anyone use anymore because we all buy into the idea you need two players at least for every position.

Who were the great utility players?

For us, Coidy springs to mind off the top of my head.

But the player that defines that role for me was Alan Harper. I think he player every position from 2-11 for Everton at some point and he was always on the bench because he was so versatile that he allowed the manager to change formation in almost any way.

Who else ?

I guess a lot of modern footballers should be more versatile as coaches prefer to have ball players in all positions.

Mike Davies; right wing, full back and didn't he play centre mid in the play off final v Scunthorpe? Looking at the team sheet, Dave Burgess would have been rb and Tony Rodwell rw.
