Because I've been there and seen it, plus everything in the media deplores our Victorian infrastructure, especially in the North.

Well I've travelled extensively in France and Spain on the train. And a little bit in Italy. I didn't find much
difference to here in the service. In Spain though it was definitely worse.
The only country I've done rail travel in which was far superior is Japan. But it was also more expensive.
