Transgender athlete qualifies for womens olympic weightlifting

Identifies as a woman? Has she had surgery, or is identification enough these days?

A world apart from Montreal 1976 when everyone was visually tested to confirm their gender except for Princess Anne.

It is; if I say I identify as a woman; I am one.

It's possibly the begining of the end of women's sport as we know it. It's why lots of sportswomen are speaking out over it and then getting piled on by our social media warriors.

I think the easiest way to deal with it is to create new classification of athletes like they do with the disability games.

Trans women, Trans men; and being facetious we could use Trans World sports to broadcast them. Actually, just posting that attempt at humour would be enough to get things going!

The trouble with my simple approach is that trans activists say that if you are a trans man or a trans woman, you are in fact a man or a woman irrespective.

Complicated stuff.

should of got Prince Andrew to check her.....

Massively unfair.

To quote Joan Collins from last night’s interview: “women are equal in every way, other than physical strength”

This is one of them areas in our social and cultural life I just don't get
I genuinely dont believe it is right to deny biology plus it's not fare

I have same feelings about prisons, hospital wards and toilets

Can't be easy to test a Lizard for gender with human testing :)?

It is certainly going to get messy in the coming years for womens sport. They are going to have to set rules that will be under attack from equality protestors.

How about what it says on your birth certificate stands👍🏻 Now this really pisses me off , hundreds of thousands of folk waiting for operations and people think it’s justified to change the sex they were born with Willy nilly ☹️

Reminds me a great deal of the Russian Press sisters, Tamara was one of them, Irena the other, in the 1960's? They soon disappeared once the testing came in.

Totally insane…. That’s what it is !!

A complete mockery of women’s sport and totally unfair on real female athletes
“The regulations are not aimed at any particular athlete, but are designed to preserve the integrity of the female category,” said World Athletics.
This quote was made in response to Caster Semenya’s case who was born female but cannot compete as female unless she takes testosterone reducing medication which she refuses to do. She has a recognised medical condition.
Yet this person who was born male just has to take some tablets to lower his testosterone levels and identify as female and hey presto he’s in. How on earth is this preserving the integrity of the female category.

Amazing a lot of woke folk getting their knickers in a twist., And before anyone jumps up and down about the word knickers, the original name for football shorts was knickers or knicks.

I understand this is a forum for opinions but people would not be so blatantly racist on here as they are being transphobic. Regardless of your opinion on whether she should be able to compete (which personally I see as a tricky one. I think she’s undergone treatment for levelling out hormones to the average level for other elite female athletes and that has been given time to take affect, then that mitigates then advantage) the post has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that she has transitioned so calling her him or even ‘shim’ not only is out of order and narrow minded but it’s nothing to do with the original post.

Fair comments.

Was he an elite athlete pre transitioning?

No I’m not sure SHE was. Like I said the matter of whether she should be able to compete is tricky, my main point was the post asked for opinions on that, not to openly discriminate against and poke fun at her

It’s actually not remotely ‘tricky’. This person is not a female and no amount of ‘transitioning’ can change that biological fact.

As for the fun-poking… Why should a sports cheat be shown respect? This person is openly discriminating against females and keeping more deserving athletes from competing… its contemptible from a sporting perspective

In every day life why would anyone have a problem with someone transitioning. What’s the answer then? Make somebody who is no longer male compete in a male competition? If that’s their hobby or livelihood they shouldn’t be told they can no longer compete.

Calling her a sports cheat is again narrow minded. Do you really think the reason she’s changed her whole life at 32 so she could compete professionally for a few years because that’s clearly not the case. There’s no discrimination from her she’s changed her own life outside of sport and has then managed to progress in a sports sense.

Each to there own but should not be competing in elite sport, as it’s the Olympics I presume it encompasses all sports, Audrey Harrison the first person to win men and women’s boxing gold medals?

I have no problem with anyone transitioning, though I would question exactly what it is that they transition into. It’s pretty insulting to suggest that being a Female is simply a ‘state of mind’ or for that matter a straightforward matter of reassignment surgery or hormonal modification…. They will never be biologically Male or Female, regardless.

So to that extent I don’t think it unreasonable to refuse access to competition that is currently categorised by biological sex. Whether there’s an argument to consider alternative classification for sports people I’m not sure.. One thing that I’m certain about is that we cannot simply shoehorn individuals into existing biologically determined categories and call that OK, because unfair advantage, to the point of diminishing the value of the competition and potentially excluding the highly skilled / competent female athletes from competition…. Crikey, women have fought long and hard to gain parity with their male counterparts in sport and then all of a sudden we think it’s acceptable for men to shove them to one side and essentially dominate their sport by stealth?

You mention her livelihood, yet zero recognition of the livelihood of those her inclusion affects. Female Athletes who’s achievements are based on merit as opposed to a very obvious biological advantage.

It’s also not remotely narrow minded to call ‘her’ a sports cheat. At the end of the day she is engaged in the competition in the full knowledge that she was grossly incapable of competing anywhere near this level in male competition and that under normal circumstances even her age would render competition at such a high level to be practically impossible. However such is her physical advantage (due to essentially being a biological male) she can suddenly ‘compete’ at Olympic level.🤔

The IOC only has two qualifying criteria and one is identifying as a female, the other is testosterone levels for 12 months.........if the IOC criteria is so weak then people will take advantage.

only females born as females should be able to compete in the Olympics female events
