Villa v United

Surely VAR has to reverse the decision?

Might as well kick a defender and fall over because you will be given a pen if that decision is anything to go by.

I agree. The more I see it the more I am aghast that decision has stood. He's gone to do a fancy spin / step over and lost his balance, stamped on the Villa defender's ankle and been given a penalty! Absurd.

And Gary "biased as fcuk" Neville declaring "IT IS A PENTALTY. He's been clever and won that". No, he cheated Gary.

And Keane declares he has been "clever, every credit". Wow. Imagine Keane's reaction if he'd have been the defender there?

Manchester United have been awarded 13 penalties this season. The joint highest number of any team for any season with 4 games to play.

Interestingly, Blackpool were 2nd highest for season 2010/11 with 9. Should have been 10 🤬. Manchester United were awarded 5 that season.

It's a simple case of umpires call.
The ref gave the penalty and there was no clear and obvious reason to overturn it.
If the ref had said no penalty then var wouldn't have overturned that decision either.
It was a soft penalty and I wouldn't have awarded it. That is pretty much what all the pundits said - including Keane and Neville.
Ten years ago Peter Walton was just a soft arse who should have given pool a penalty and sent Rafael off.

That's the theory but again it's subject to opinion.
I watched the Spurs game where the ref didn't give a penalty when a defender ran straight in to Kane from behind as he was going for the ball. The VAR ref didn't give it maybe because he didn't think it was a clear and obvious error too. But the watching guests said it should have been a penalty so if they are saying that then in their view it's a clear and obvious error. So again it's not about VAR it's about people controlling it and is all about opinions. Just like the UTD one, some say yes and some say no.
So to me something is wrong with the system and that imo is the over reliance of the VAR ref. The ref on the pitch should be alertedon these types of incidents and much more use needs to be made of the pitch side monitor by the actual refs.
I am in favour of VAR because the actual system is good. It's the refs who are making it look bad.

In the good old days, the ref gave a decision and that was that.
Maradona's handball was clear and obvious and would be spotted these days by VAR and the goal disallowed.
Lampard's goal against Germany was miles over the line and these days would have been allowed. Likewise the one that Roy Carroll let in against Spurs.
Technology has made sure that horrendous decisions like those are a thing of the past.
We are now debating the minutiae after watching from 6 angles in super slow motion.
The ref gives the decisions and if there is a clear and obvious error as per the above examples then the decision is reversed.
People discussing problems with VAR decisions need to give their heads a wobble.

Just seen the Kane one from today and a penalty should definitely have been awarded. However, that was not the fault of VAR or the rules - it was the fault of the VAR official. He can and should have alerted the ref.
As Patrice Evra just said on Sky "who was in charge of VAR tonight - Ray Charles?"

I’m more amazed that Bournemouth’s ground is full of banners etc. Declaring Red Army Red Army when their kit is predominantly Black! - Football without fans truly is nothing innit!

Three pen decisions last night from 3 different games and all of them wrong.
VAR was brought in to get things correct but proven again they should just leave it to the man in the middle like they did in the world cup on a screen off the pitch it worked this doesn't.

It's clear we're still pissed off with Peter Walton after 10 years, mainly because at 3-0 United would never have come back and effectively we'd have stayed up.
Corrupt git.

I see the PL have stated the VAR officials got the decisions wrong. Their admittance surely means a clear and obvious error.
United shouldn't have had a penalty and Spurs should have.
The problem isn't VAR it's the referees.

Has anybody got a link to that 'non' penalty? I've been trying to find one to show my mate but only found the fans view from behind the goal.
