Thinking of going down to Watford next Saturday, but trains are extortionate which is putting me off.

Does anyone know of any tricks like split tickets to make tickets cheaper, or are we just stuck as it is?

Thanks

On another note I'm looking at returns from stoke for the udders game and it just says tickets not yet available (or something along those lines). ** weird as it's only like 2.5 weeks away??? Trains are fucked atm.

It’s an absolute joke. Looking at over £130 for return for 2 of us. Slightly cheaper if you book tickets from Wigan.

Not to mention the fact that trains are cancelled all over the place

Railway is on its absolute arse. No real weekend cheap tickets anymore since Covid has happened I noticed.

Tickets aren’t announced until 2 weeks out at the min due to constant ongoing threat of strike action probably. 2 weeks being minimum notice period
It should be made be a cheaper alternative to driving, with all the eco stuff going on, but it’s going up. Ridiculous

450 mile round trip so gunna be £60 in diesel for me so I’ve ended up going on the train and I’ve paid around £110, on the lash so I didn’t want to drive anyway. Going Friday to Sunday
You can get trains for £65 pp return with a 2 together railcard or similar railcard like that. Don’t think that’s too bad at all (if they run) if they don’t I’m knackered

I’ve been up a while and it appears cheapest buying singles from Blackpool North to Wigan, then to Birmingham new street then to Watford

Me and my daughter bought a duo card for £30 valid for a year and we got train travel for both of us to London and return for £120. Well worth paying the £30 for the massive discounts if you and a mate travel regularly by train
You must travel together on the duo card

I don't know how old you are, but I have a senior discount card for the railway and it saves me about 1/3 of the price on a ticket from Bradford to Blackpool return, that's when they run! I haven't even looked at the Hudders game yet as it is over two weeks away, and have been offered a lift for the Forest trip. So was a late purchaser of a ticket for the game.

The only other alternative is National Express, which arrives in Blackpool in good time around 10.30 via Manchester but leaves early at 17.15 from Bonny Street, and that is the last bus I can find.

It depends on which company you're using. I booked Leeds to King's Cross with LNER over Christmas for the Watford game. Cost me £30.

I once went by train to watch us play at Newcastle whilst I was living in Wigan. I found it far cheaper to get a day return Wigan to Preston, day return Preston to Carlisle and a day return Carlisle to Newcastle than just buy a Wigan to Newcastle ticket. That to me suggested blatant profiteering.

Wouldn't touch trains with a barge pole at mo they might be not on strike next weekend but there's a work to rule and overtime ban in place get a coach.

I assume that’s Avanti? They are absolutely dreadful before you even factor in the strikes
I can get the tickets from Stoke to crewe, but the tickets from crewe to Blackpool are the ones without pricing yet. So I assume that's Northern rail? Nhs strikes i can get behind, especially for nurses and midwives who havent had a proper pay rise for 25 years. But rail strikes, especially drivers... they're paid £65k a year on average. Its a joke. And most of their other staff are completely unqualified in any professional capacity. Every single year they want more and more and MORE.

Try the cheapest ticket to Euston (might be very early) and if the train stops at Watford get off otherwise get the tube to Watford from Euston (cheaper than the £17 return back or do the same thing as coming down

Or check National Coaches any where South from Blackpool depot

Do you drive about with a thousand lives dependent on you maintaining total focus at all times?

Completely unqualified? Which staff do you have in mind? Could you go and replace some track tomorrow?

As has been pointed out numerous times, it's completely this Government's fault that inflation has ballooned out of control. Why shouldn't people be compensated for the rise (from someone getting a massive 2% rise next July)

I wouldn’t try getting of the Euston train at Watford 😬

I think that’s probably Avanti (North/South) rather than Northern Rail (West/East). You couldn’t book tickets in advance for several weeks just before Christmas so it sounds like the same thing. That was unconnected to the strikes.

They are really dreadful regardless of industrial action. So bad they’ve been put on a temporary contract until April and if they don’t improve they’ll almost certainly lose the franchise.

I’ve had that thought too, as the Tube is comparatively very cheap. I’m happy to go down early, still crazy prices though

Yeah it's my mistake, I recently discovered its avanti just not allowing you to prebook tickets on certain dates 🙃

No I don't. But I feel they are paid rather handsomely for their pulling of a lever, and pressing of a couple of buttons, and stopping at red lights and going at green. Like I said, train drivers are on an average of £65k a year, they're not exactly skint, are they?

I'm talking about cleaners, ticket staff, conductors and them people who blow the whistle and wave that white lolly pop in the air.

None of them have been to uni. None of them are qualified. I'd even go as far as saying train drivers aren't really qualified at all. Only so much as a HGV driver. And I wouldnt say they were qualified either.

In a way they are glorified tram drivers.

Hey the 5:50 or 6:30 or 10:34 from Poulton to Milton Keynes (u could also try Leighton BuZzard) is just £34.50‘ish) but it’s a tight change but doable to Watford from there — easily the cheapest way to the game

Let's not let the facts get in the way of a good rant!
Average train driver salary is £48,500, starting salary is £30,000.

Clearly I was looking at a different source. Regardless of whichb is true, they're on a damn sight more than nurses and midwives for doing extremely little in comparison

It always makes me wonder why more people don't become train drivers?

It's apparently really easy, there is no responsibility, they apparently only press a couple of buttons and a pull a lever and yet they get paid 65k a year(they don't)

It really makes people angry at how much they get paid for doing so little, but yet nobody seems to try and apply for it.

Surely it must be a doddle to get the job with it being so easy? Surely the 20percent pass rate for the psychometric test is a lie as why would it be so hard if the job has such a small list of duties.
