Why is Sunak addressing the nation at 5.40pm uk?

Listened to an interview yesterday on radio 4 with Dave Fishwick of bank of Dave fame. What a bloody fantastic fella. The passion he spoke with about how banks should work and be run. It's people like him and Martin Lewis that should be running this country.

Conflating the protests with Islamist hate marches while also trying to make this a culture war issue.

Patriotic Brits versus (woke/muslim/Islamists) who hate the West and want to do this country down.

I think the hope is to show Tories on the right he's tough enough to stop them joining Reform...and drag Labour to a position where they get attacked from both sides.

Galloway and the MP's Starmer kicked out of the party will be hammering Labour for not calling for a cease fire and being Tory-lite.
Conservatives will go after Starmer for representing terrorist groups when he was a lawyer, not knowing what a woman is...etc.

Not sure if it'll work but it's not the worst idea strategically.

Edit: Sky cuts straight to Galloway for his reaction and an extended interview. He's going to get an insane amount of air time between now and the election.

Edit: That was brilliant by Galloway. Tore the reporter and both Starmer and Sunak to pieces for 10 minutes, 2 applause breaks and then told the reporter he had other people to talk to.
Odious self-serving man but plays the game masterfully.

Dear me, who on earth is advising him? If that was a bid for the moral high ground, I don't think it is going to work. In fact all he's done is to draw attention to Galloway, one of the most wretched and hate-filled people ever to be elected in this country. Rather than rising above him, he's chosen to get down in the gutter with him, and it will be our democratic rights - to free speech, and peaceful protest - that suffer.

I think he missed a trick by not wearing a Union Jack around his shoulders. But he did get one thing right when he said that there was a small group of people who were trying to systematically undermine our values and our democracy. The trouble is that you could argue that he was referring to the card-carrying Members of the Conservative Party, who keep electing Leaders who are woefully ill-equipped for the job that we need them to do.

I think that's what he wants. Galloway doing well takes votes away from Labour, nobody is on the fence over whether to vote Conservative or The Workers Party.

That was an awful listen. Sunak whining like a child about how “it’s not fair” and “be nice everyone”. If ever there was a sign of weakness that was it; the country is going to the dogs and all he can do is bleat like a sheep.

Tomorrow, I would not be surprised if Braverman repeated similar messages but upped the ante, demanding preventative detention for “extremist protesters”.

Sunak reminded me of nobody more than Ted Heath who, as PM, pathetically asking the electorate “Who runs the country?” in 1974. They soon answered “Obviously not you, chum”.

Could you explain exactly what he is right on?

He seemed to be rolling the pitch for something, but I couldn`t quite make out exactly what it was, and what he was going to do about it...
No point as we won't agree / can't be arsed 👍

Whatever you think of the PM, he's right on this.
He's being deliberately evocative. The world is in a difficult place at the moment. But leaders in 1st world countries could do to be a tad more circumspect. The thing about democracy is that there's no reason why good people must win. It's rule by the vote of the people. In Rochdale Galloway won. He's a self-serving rabble rouser. But he won. As AVFTT would say, end of.

Some on here would rather pretend there's no issues.

Only have to look at some of what weve seen at marches and what reform faced in the Rochdale by election.

Said as much on the Lee Anderson thread. Turns out this is starting sooner than expected. The GE is going to be fun. 😬

Maybe it’s about dodgy postal votes ,or threats to other candidates or hastling people outside the polling station which is against the law or maybe it’s about threats to firebomb peoples businesses who are opposition supporters ???

As we were told after Brexit, when a pro Remain MP was shot and stabbed to death just down the road from me, you lost, get over it. Tice is whinging because his good results a couple of weeks ago weren't replicated in Rochdale.

There were a unique set of circumstances here with 3 ex Labour MPs standing and very specific local issues and concerns.

It won't be replicated elsewhere.

Actually I bet there’s footage of him behind the door at 10 collecting £20 notes and screaming “you all frigging dared me to!!”

Hope not.

That's a really sad post that.

People say get over the vote not condoning any extreme violence.

Yet you have basically just said... we'll it happened this way so it's OK the other way.

Threats of violence and intimidation on any side should be called out, but you failed to do so.

Tice is just whinging? So as expected you're completely dismissing the very serious allegations. Not even allegations, I posted the link on another thread of an extremists calling their candidate a bald white devil and saying he'd put one in his head.

Yep nothing to see here.

Threatened to firebomb a burger van that had reform leaflets in it apparently.

Surely that’s the stuff that should be saved for a party political broadcast. Not a ‘breaking news address the country’ type of announcement.
Yep, address the country is Johnson announcing Covid restrictions.

This was just hyperbole designed to provide him with some kind of statesman aura, instead he came across as rattled and out of his depth.

The only danger is from a man trying to curb protests.

My girls thought we were going to war when they announced the announcement 😳 Ridiculous waste of air time that.

`Nothing screams "Don`t panic! Don`t panic!" like a hastily arranged Downing Street announcement at 5.45 on a Friday night.`

Can anyone explain exactly what Sunak is actually going to do?

You are correct but they ae now conflating the best interests of the Tory Party with those of the country. They are allowed to broadcast all the propaganda they like on GBnews with our toothless regulator, so now they have uped it to the National Media.

Said it a couple of days ago, the end game worries me.

No, that happened years ago when woefully liberal twerps wouldn’t admit what motivated them

Yep, luckily they're running out of time.

I see my reply to this post has gone, despite as I always am, being very careful with my words. Reported as apparent racist undertones by some 🙄 For stating a fact about the voting patterns, as mentioned in that article, all voting in unison, and questioning integration if so. If 4 million people voting along religious grounds doesn't show a lack of integration what would?

Absolutely ridiculous.

I don't believe them, that's why. Last night he was saying there was a big mob outside the counting hall. The pictures showed maybe 20 people, most of whom were journalists on their phones.

Crying wolf, like Sunak.

Look, no one wants to see intimidation during an election. If it's proved, then I'll hold my hand up, but there's a history of electoral losers claiming all kinds of things that don't come to anything.

Farage (who is the owner of Reform, don't forget) is a past master of it, along with his bestie Trump.
