Would Critch come back?

Simon has made it clear he would ‘Welcome Neil back with open arms’ - I cannot see any reason why he wouldn’t pick up the phone and at least ask the question…which then leads to the ultimate question…would Neil say yes?

Neil has had a rough few months, after failing at QPR his options appear to be either a struggling Championship side or a league one team - he knows the players here and got results with them, especially in league one where we thrived in the second half of the season, arguably being the best side in the league.

Would he swallow his pride and come back with his tail between his legs?

I dont hold any grudges, just a disappointment of not acknowledging the fans when he left. Ultimately, with the mess we are currently in, I would take him back and move forward in the interest of the club.
 
I would ask the question. It may be that he wants to step back into the shadows and not have such a high profile role. He would probably walk into a coaching role with one of the England youth teams.
 
I think, after the gaffers we have seemingly turned down since Critch left, its more of a case of who will want the job. Critch did well in League 1 with us, so there are worse appointments out there, but would he even want it?

What Simon said from recollection is that NC would always be welcome back at Bloomfield Road.

He did not say in what capacity but I don't think he was committing to re employing him - more likely to watch a game and perhaps partake in a prawn sandwich.

NC would be a strong candidate possibly the best candidate on paper.

However my concern is that we need a bit of a rebuild. The new manager will need to be given time by the fans. Everyone would need to buy into it. I would.

There is also the fact that our recent history with re employing managers has not worked .

I think we've just been lucky with this and wouldnt necessarily mean that it would be the same with every ex manager.

Its a real shame that NC didnt address the fans directly why he left and thank for the terrific support he and his team were given. Had he done so a way back would have been much easier.

That being said a new recruitment process for a manager may find someone better in any event.
 
Realistically, you'd hope there are enough potential managers out there who don't need the support of others to succeed. You'd never take NC without a perm No 2 (not a 'till something better comes along' bloke) which begs the question with him; which is the most important, him or the No 2?.

If he thinks he can get the fans back onboard, then maybe, he took the job in the first place and his reputation hasn't been improved by what's happened since he left.
 
Looking at the names banded about as options and those not managing at the moment, I cannot see many better options than Critchley?

Unless there’s a hot overseas talent that wants to manage Div 1 (doubt that) then it’s either someone from Div 2 or conference that’s ready for a chance, an academy manager again (if so then might as well be Critch) or we get another failed manager we don’t know in.

Are there any lesser club Div 1 managers performing well we could buy (effectively that’s what we have to do) - can’t think of any at present.
 
It would be a difficult one for the fans to accept after the manner in which he left and it could very quickly turn toxic if results started to go badly. I'm not saying I wouldn't take him back but it would be a very short honeymoon period and we know how well that worked with Appleton.

Paul Simpson would be my first choice, perhaps Critchley could come as his assistant? 😉
 
Seriously why would we want him back ! On his departure he treated the fans like shit .
Have we learned nothing from the Grayson and Appleton debacles ?
 
I think he would love to have an owner like Sadler gain who showed him respect and gave him time.

However, I'm not sure if Sadler would appoint him again after what happened with Appleton. Appointing a manager that isn't popular with a large section of the fanbase is very risky. I would be less annoyed with Critchley than I was with Appleton but some are extremely against him.

And we finished the season like a relegation team with 2 wins in 10, including a thrashing by Posh & being humiliated last home game V Derby.
NC left like a Judas rat, he won't want to return & I think there are far better managers out there (don't ask me who, it's pointless, as I have no say in the matter).

Would I welcome I’m back? Yes, due to the fact that he did more than his two successors.
And which is why, for the same reasons, I would welcome Olly back with open arms.
I don’t care what anyone says about him but he was the one person who really created a great atmosphere around the place and played entertaining football (albeit with a hung ho attitude).
Just imagine if Appleton and McCarthy had adopted that attitude then maybe we wouldn’t even be in this predicament.
 
Sadler has admitted he wouldn't have appointed Appleton if he'd have known there'd have been the backlash there was, whilst it wouldn't be as negative as that, there'd still be a backlash given the way Critchley left.

Personally I think we'll go for someone completely new and try to start an entirely new 'long term project' A'la Critchley

I think that is what is going to happen. For me its more of a risk but i dont think they have any other option.
 
What is the matter with you all??? He started to disintegrate with us towards the end of that season, left us for a job that was never going to last more than 9 months and then was terrible at QPR.

I give up!
 
I would consider our new manager in Division 1 could be Charle Adam providing he has an experienced No2. Charlie would galvanise
the fan base and bring a lot of exitement and interest to the club 'Bums on seats' etc. The reason I suggest this is because I think the Board are in a difficult position and will not want to get it wrong again. I think CA would be welcomed by the fans and it could be good appointment if he has a good assistant alongside him who has the experience to hit the ground running in Division 1 next season. With the Coventry Boys in place and if they can add some quality it would'nt surprise me if the Board went for this kind of appointment. I dont know what qualification CA has but I'm sure he would be interested. At present he is at Burnley coaching the under 21. Or they go for a young coach with all the badges bit like Critchley ?

He did a terrific job for us, much of it due to the bond he created between him, the players and the fans. I don't think the fans would treat him the same after he left us in the lurch so close to the start of the season.

He was in a difficult position, the reason he left was to become de facto manager of Villa, but with Gerrard there as figurehead he couldn't say that publicly.

The Villa job was never going to last, Gerrard was going to get potted, It was only about 4 months wasn't it? I think 9 months was very generous.
 
Are we just gonna get stuck in a feedback loop of appointing old managers? After Critchley fucks us off again they'll reappoint Grayson due to his success in India
 
I’d have NC back personally - doubtless our best manager post-Holloway, & someone who could put the footballing side of ‘the business’ back on course.

The manner of his departure undoubtedly left a seriously sour taste however, & whether he could overcome that & win back the supporters is a major doubt.

Both sides would need to swallow their pride for the greater good - I certainly can’t see him badge-thumping/fist-pumping the North for a good few games tho’….

That’s why ex players and ex managers are getting put forward as suggestions. Give me an option that is better than Critch

I absolutely agree . It’s all about timing , and our timing hasn’t been good in recent times . Personally I would have liked Liam Manning I think Oxford could do well with him . The only other that stands out for me is Evatt and we’ve no chance there. But this is why we have a recruitment team . We’ve got to get it right eventually ?

Going back rarely works out in football and life in general. Leave the past in the past and look forward and find the next NC or the first whoever. BTW though NC did a very good job for us
