My concern is that, just like the Prem, the Championship is being segregated into groups of clubs with similar prospects... such as those trying to avoid relegation, those happy with a mid-table finish as long as they do not spend too much, those trying to buy promotion and, lastly, those with parachute payments who are becoming the yo-yo elite.
This latter category includes clubs like Norwich, Watford and West Brom. So the attraction for a player like Yates in joining WBA is not only the increase in wages but, if he does well, the possible chance of playing in the Prem in a season’s time. While it’s unlikely that an established Prem club would directly buy him now, getting promoted with a club like WBA increases the chances of that happening sooner, and he is young enough to factor that into his most optimistic career plan.
Of course, the way to prevent that is for the Pool to dominate the division straight away and be promoted to the Prem as champions.
