So the World is shut

Apart from good old Blighty. Business as usual.

Whilst Rome burns Boris and his cronies fumble about blustering about following science resulting in them contradicting everything WHO have asked. Absolute disgrace.

maybe they're giving due consideration to the implications of shutting up shop. The effects will be significant and long lasting. Many businesses wont recover.

I must admit I've been gobsmacked at the lengths that governments and organisations are going to to contain this.

It genuinely makes you wonder how serious this could be when actions are being taken which will be costing billions of pounds/dollars in lost trade & expenditure.

Well we are doing very little as it stands. Just basically told to do what we have been told to do already. At least the match will go ahead Saturday

The press conference said:

1. Anyone with a new persistent cough or high temperature should self-isolate for seven days.

2. From Friday, school trips abroad will be banned.

3. Older people and those with pre-existing health conditions have been told not to go on cruises.

4. The number of cases will "rise sharply". The peak numbers will be 10 to 14 weeks away.

5. The suspension of major public events such as sporting fixtures is under consideration, but this would be a measure primarily to protect public services. You are less likely to catch or spread the virus in a stadium than in enclosed spaces like a pub.

Take it you are a medical professional?

We don’t want the ‘cure’ to be worse than the disease, but I do think we should have done something more about the people coming in from Northern Italy. We have known about this ‘hotspot’ for quite a while, and I know some friends who flew back from the region on Saturday, who were not screened, advised, sanitised or anything. Surely that pathway has been an open goal into this country for the virus. We were quick enough stopping flights from China after all.

Some good news from the World Health Organisation - they have confirmed that dogs are immune to the virus and dogs that have been quarantined can now be released. So ..........

WHO let the dogs out !

Because of the attention span of the average member of the public, bringing in measures too early will lead to them being ignored.

The average Facebook user is swinging between panic buying bog rolls, and sharing info graphics which say it's no more big a deal than regular flu.

I hope they become infected first.

You genuinely think the government have made this decision without independent expert advice?
Regardless - they have made a decision contrary to the rest of Europe. I'd like to know why given the horrific goings on in Italy. Why not try and prevent this? Ireland has 1 recorded victim and has shut down schools and colleges. Why would social distancing from the early days NOT be a good idea? Why is our government doing different to others? How can Boris stand and say how grave the situation is yet simply say continue to wash your hands and we'll review stuff? Surely the time is now?

I certainly don’t understand why flights from Italy haven’t been stopped, however, the impact of closing schools etc., would be massive for those who work and have kids at school, and would it make any difference? Parents wouldn’t be able to keep their kids in the house 24/7, so would inevitably mix with others.

How about parents who work in the NHS, what are they going to do at a time when we need them most.

I’m attending a meeting tomorrow morning of key personnel to divvy up responsibilities and cell management under our catastrophic event plan.

“9.30am tomorrow all key managers will gather In the boardroom”. I really don’t think they’ve thought this through properly!!!!!

The dog released in HK died two days later!!

Seems the panic about shutting schools turned out to be unfounded. There was no way we were going to let health workers struggle with childcare nor were we going to let the most vulnerable to their own devices 24 hours a day.

I stand by my reply.

The implications of this effective shutdown are massive and will be felt for a generation. It remains to be seen whether it was wholly necessary.

I did'nt and still dont understand what was the thing about panic buying of bog rolls. 😟

Just wondering if Old Laytonian is ok after ignoring me?

Bumbling fumbling Old Etonions and their bladdy good chap science mates have cost thousands of lives.

March 13th should have been a full shut down and ANY required trip wearing a facemask.

Over a month later and over 18,000 deaths (minus the tragedy of carehomes) - and still absolutely nothing. Not enough PPE, no serious lockdown and utter clowns running the show.

What a mess.

The curve is flattening, there are thousands of extra beds, more ventilators, tons of ppe and a greater knowledge and understanding than we have had. Now is the time to stop the lockdown and revert to herd immunity. If not now when and how, we can’t carry on like this for ever, in this situation with millions of unaffected people there will be a spike. It’s inevitable so let’s just get on with it, the sooner we’re all out there the sooner we all gain immunity and it goes away. Answers on a post card please.

Are you going to start your own public protest? Get on the steps of the town hall.
If we go back to normal it won't be long before ALL those beds are taken up and ALL those ventilators are used. They will only begin to ease the lockdown or the last five weeks will be for nothing.

I'm not an expert. I can only go off what I can see other countries doing and the emphasis appears to be limiting the R transmission to below 1 and to gently ease restrictions so as not to cause a tsunami of second wave cases. That policy is one of containment and limitation. From what you seem to be implying, you appear to want everything open and we all take our chances.
Not sure there's a health service globally that would cope with that.
Can I ask what your occupation is?

Put it this way I’m still working, was the idea not to flatten the curve to give the NHS time to get their act together ? We have done this and are now much more prepared to cope with an influx of patients.
there isn’t a never ending money tree and I’m pretty sure the damage to people’s lives will be massive if we have to lock down for months, the economic loss to people’s lives will be felt for decades. Don’t get me wrong this isn’t just about the economy but we need to get people through the immunity phase otherwise this will just go on and on. Would it not be better to push for a test that tells us if you have had the virus that way people could get on with life wearing say. Green bracelet so people know they have an immunity. The figures world wide are seriously distorted and too many people are putting too much faith in figures from other countries.

Scara. Whilst the NHS seems to have coped with the first wave it’s wrong to suggest it’ll now be able to cope with whatever is thrown at it. There’s still a massive shortage of PPE and ventilators and, just as important, medical staff. The new Nightingale Hospital is turning away covid patients as it doesn’t have enough nurses.

That said, I totally agree about the damage the lockdown is causing to the economy.

And no, I don’t know what the answer is or how we square the circle.

Funny how you never suggest that for Cat who seems to have far more issues than Scara. Just saying that for balance of course. 😉
I wasn’t aware I had issues, but thanks for letting me know 🤔

Just thinking about the anti lockdown protests in the States. Scara seems to share the same beliefs. There could be two protests...whilst both maintaining social distance.
