Desperate times ahead for a lot of people this winter and desperate people do desperate things to keep themselves and family warm and to put food on the table!

I don't know how pensioners etc are going to pay the bills forget the heating for one minute there's not a lot you can do about washing, cooking, lighting & TV for example which takes up the majority of your usage.

Indeed and those with medical conditions etc etc

And pensioners are proportionally at home more often, therefore utilising heat and light more often.

Plus my mother in law has the thermostat set at around 25 degrees.

I don’t get how ofgem are allowing this to happen. The increase is almost half of my husbands dwp pension absolutely scandalous.
How do they expect people to pay this amount of money every month? Going up again in January aswell ( every three months)
Pensioners etc are going to be too frightened to put their heating on in winter they’re gonna end up freezing to death. Bloody disgusting

Meanwhile France (who own EDF and other energy companies) have a price cap of 0%, and Norway have said they'll pay 90% of bills.

In effect, our price rises to EDF will subsidise the French bill payers.

Comes down to the will of politicians, and this lot don't give a stuff.

Yet we still get plenty defending them on here, blaming world conditions etc etc. Do they not apply in other countries, just here?

I think the price cap only applies to domestic consumers?

Businesses are probably going to have to pay higher, with a high possibility of businesses closing down, resulting in job losses. It's becoming a very vicious circle. The government just haven't got a grip at all, kicking the can down the road until a new PM is appointed is making matters worse.

I saw on the news that an estimated 7/10 pubs might close in the winter because opening is no longer viable!!
So it's already starting to hit businesses plans now.

Then up again in January as posted already. Jeez, we're paying 340 pm now.

They govern for the people not profit. Norway saved their North Sea oil windfall to invest into their country and for a rainy day. We used our windfall to cut taxes. Clearly Norway are those loony lefty sorts that deserve all the derision they get.

My wife’s cousins pub will be one of them, he’s struggling before this hike! Fuck-ofgem. Outrageous!

Are we not protecting the old and vulnerable anymore then?

Struggling to keep up with it.

Small and independent businesses in the shit again, call me cynical but…

I think Tory voters should pay mine, it's their fault after all.

That's if they haven't spent all their cash on flags and laminated photos of Thatcher.
Now I know you like a good wind up Lytham, but who’s going to fix this ? Genuine question.

The man on the street needs to wise up and demand better. These says most people don't give a shit about anyone but themselves, that's been a political objective since the 70s. Its worked so far but I sense a tipping point.

Norway are not reliant on gas as they produce most of their energy from hydro electricity, so the high price of world gas is great for the Norwegian economy. Sorry to piss on your chips.

It’s time for me to start my price comparisons. Contract up with e.on at end of Sept. (Evidently, I’m £200+ In credit for the last 11 months @ £196/mth.)
I’ll let you know how I get on.

Very expensive fish n chips and beer though in Oslo.🍺

Good luck, because the comparison websites I did all said stick with what you have.

No idea, we elect people for the sole reason of coming up with solutions, someone must be able to, unfortunately they're not in the piss poor excuse of the current government.

We're getting shafted while the Tory party has another civil war and genuinely doesn't seem to give a fuck.

I don’t believe parliamentary democracy has worked so far.
Our 1000year Parliament is nothing of the sort. It’s only about 100 years since everyone could vote. The first half of that period was kind of okay and largely taken with defeating totalitarian and fascist states and recovering from the consequences. But the 50 years since have led us to a failed system.

Where are the flag wavers this morning? Things will only get worse in the UK over the next 20 years. As long as we continue on a road of strangling our own economy, there isn't really much hope for any improvement. We are too small to take Global knocks like these on our own.
All parties are guilty of not having a robust energy policy. The fact that governments can change every 5 years means that long term planning is kicked down the road. Same is true for rail, health etc.
Nationalisation unfortunately led to power mad trade union officials who delighted in holding the country to ransom. That led to a mass of privatisation which was not the answer.

Except Truss will just cut some taxes, get the media on her side and people will do what they're told. When was the last time The Sun backed a losing candidate?

No harm in trying. I’m not too lazy to scratch around.
Our semi may only be three bedrooms but it’s 1,400 sq ft. I’ll get the prices and post them. Folk can then make their comparison against their property size.
I believe there are other companies out there beyond the comparison websites. I’ll say no more on that ‘til I have proper quotes next month.
PS: I’m on holiday at the moment.

Yeah, good luck, sorry, my reply wasn't supposed to sound sarcastic.

Sorry to piss on your chips, read the attached and see how Norway dealt with it's oil money and what the UK did. Its tragic....

I don’t believe any of the current shower of shite waiting in the wings has for the first clue how to fix this. I find that just as much as a concern as the useless bunch in power.

It's a good point and I agree about the current opposition, Corbyn had actual plans and saw it coming, although I realise you're not going to agree 😀

We were happy to find billions to pay businesses for 18 months. A winter of no price increases would cost far less. As it is, no doubt there will be another windfall tax at some point and some will be delighted to get 5% of their own money back, while the companies see it as barely a dent in their profits.

Was it the Shell boss who said they had that big a profit they didn't know what to do with it?

The French can do it. Why can't we?

But he's an enemy of the state, a commie who hates this country. Fuck me how easy was it for people to believe that bollocks, communities with zero hope voting for a bunch of Etonions who give out lucrative contracts to their mates, blamed the EU for the countries woes. No wonder poor areas get less funding for schools and education, keep them down and whip up an immigration/woke frenzy. Divide and rule is too easy and yet there are vast swathes of poor people in the country still think socialist principles aren't in their interest.

Yeah, that much of a commie he was best mates with Putin...oh wait, he was right again...

Literally no-one has a solution for this, because the solution should have been put into place 20-25 years ago, but successive governments have focused on privatisation of anything they could privatise; the regulatory frameworks have been massacred in order to protect those privatisations. Ofgen even state that many of the things they put in place are to protect energy companies from going bankrupt (which in some perverse way protects the consumer (but it doesn’t)).

Even the plans by Starmer which are about as thorough as any political plan: first of all assist the wealthy more than those in actual need, and secondly are a rather simplistic short term solution.

The whole method of billing for energy needs to be looked at, from consumers to industry. There is something wrong in an energy system where the biggest users get the cheapest prices. That might tally with typical supply and demand curves but it doesn’t work with energy and other utilities. Not if you want a system that functions in the future.

Whatever solution is arrived at has to be looking 20 to 30 years ahead, because energy has to be transitioned from where we are now, to something that that will function at that point in the future – and beyond.

Pushback from the energy companies (and the finance markets) is massive because whatever plans are put forward will have to effectively break the current system / methodology/ orthodoxy and necessitate a rebuild from the ground up, and no government at the moment is prepared to think beyond the next 100 days and no financial system is prepared to consider much beyond the next quarter.

It fails to point out the oil and gas was not needed to prop up the Norwegian energy sector. So revenue was mainly exports.
Do you not think investing in stocks and shares is a very capitalist approach.
Norway did well that cannot be denied, and shows a nationalised industry can be a good thing if those pesky trade union officials do not screw it up.
