Abingdon Street Market

Used to go every Saturday morning many moons ago, pork chops from ‘The Italian Stallions” stall, frozen swordfish and tuna from the fish stall (obvs), fresh veg & fruit, and nuts and spices from the stall at the exit to Edward Street. Hope the revamp is a big success.

Hope so as well.
I used to use the book stall towards the EdwardStreet end, hope it's still there.

Will include...
  • A new 250 seating area for socialising and enjoying food and beverages purchased in the market
  • Six dedicated food outlets and two bar areas
  • A range of units providing food produce, artisan stalls and flexible retail space for independent traders
  • Café/coffee stall and bar area

Yet another cog in Blackpool Town Centre revival. Will check it out tomorrow. Really want it to be a success. Onwards and upwards!
Yep another good edition.

Covered it in the Blackpool thread on the other side, but there's...

A wood-fired pizza place.
American burger place doing hotdogs etc.
Punjabi soul food.
Smoked food like pulled pork, bbq ribs etc.
Neighbourhood subs doing NYC type subs.
Coffee place
Bar.
Cocktail bar.

If the quality of stalls is good I’m sure it will be a winner for the town. Looks very good from those photos.

Looks class. Will definitely check it out next time I'm in't Pool.

Should be very popular with tourists when there is big events on at the winter gardens.

My late Nan bought some knock off wrestling figures from in there. She said I wouldn't know the difference. I did , they were rubbish. It still pains me to this day.

Meeting up with a couple of former BGS boys for a couple of days of nostalgia in August.
Will put it on the list.
Used to be sent there by my Mum to get streaky bacon and pork pies after The Odeon Club on Saturday morning. 😁

Yup. Still got all the old singles with the centres popped out. Slade, T Rex, Wizzard etc etc👍
God that image of the centre bit missing from singles really dragged me back to the late seventies!
Why did they have the bit missing?
I remember having loads of the middle bits for that very reason

I remember the chicken stall, in the 1960's. Fresh chickens gutted as you waited. the smell was awful., but the chickens were nice. My mum used to get them for the guest house from there, and it was often my job to go and collect them.

I can't see any of the previous stalls fitting into the new concept. A haberdasher or butchers would look out of place.
The new facility provides something previously missing in town though so I wish it well.

Not forgetting the cheese stall where the stall holder would say “thanks for t’order”
Oh and the Shrewsbury and ginger biscuit stall.

They were recycled from jukeboxes
Yup - you could also get a circular plastic "middle" that sat on the spindle of your record player. I recall the lack of a centre for singles was big in northern soul where a lot of the records came from jukeboxes in the backyards of the USA?

My Grandma and Grandad used to have the old fashioned sweet stall in there. I always remember the unique smells that those sort of places had.

The Odeon. We were sent to the Ritz on the prom or the King Edward alternate Saturdays for cartoons, three stooges, laurel and Hardy etc. While my mum got on with running the boarding house on Coop Street 👍

Cold meat from the front stall and fresh baps from the bakery stall was a standard Saturday night tea for me and mine going back 20 odd years 👍
This is much needed progress though.

I personally think it will be rammed most weekends. Looks a bit like Albert Schloss now 👌 Definitely moved with the times here and an excellent addition to the town.

Thank God for that because some of the posts above make it's previous guise sound like a scene from Oliver Twist.

"We used to go to the gruel stall and then after that our nan would treat us to a nice bit of coddled pig's spleen in a dripping barm".

It's great to see and things really look like they are on the up for the town. We are definitely moving back but are waiting for my mum to fall off her perch, 98 and super glued on at the moment! Thought we were going to lose he a couple of times last winter but she's made out of girders!!

A memory of Abingdon St Market.
I would have been about 7 years old, so was during the war.
Saturday morning, as usual, I went shopping with Mum. Coming out at the top end there were 2 sets of swing doors.
As we went through the first door I noticed a purse on the ground.
I picked it up and opened it. There were 3 1£ notes and some silver. A lot of money then.
We asked the nearby stall owners if they knew who had dropped it, and they all said 'No'.
As the Police station was on our way home, South King St, we went in and gave it to the PC on the counter.
He said, 'Come back in 3 months to see if it has been claimed, if it hasn't been claimed, it's yours'.
Went back in 3 months and the purse had not been claimed.
Mum gave some extra pocket money that week.
£3 was a lot of money in those days.
I have often thought about that, it must have been owned by an elderly lady who could ill afford to lose that much.
