Accrington Stanley v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 19.12.20

Feels like Oxford again, different but the same, in that we have nullified our threat with the selection. Ward is desperately needed, with him and Dougall we’d have greater control.

Accy play schoolboy football bang it forward and see what happens.
Frustrating to watch but it's working for them this season.
I know which team I'd rather support

I think they've played some very nice football in and around the area. Furthermore we've played our own amount of hoofball at times.

Pitch and conditions are garbage, especially for us really negates all our strengths.

This is going to be won by one goal, which ever team goes long ball and just puts bodies inthe box will get that goal.

Some times you just have to play the conditions, today isn’t the game for neat and tidy one and two touch passing Accy are closing down well.

After a couple of scary early moments the defending has been very very good. Happy to say I was completely wrong about Big Marv.

Plenty of space behind them
Anderson or CJ will get in one on one at some point.
Fairly even but I think we look like scoring more
Accy look like they are used to bullying teams out of the game
State of the pitch doesn't help passing teams like us either

They will tire playing like they do, especially Mark Hughes and Terry Butcher how old are they!?
these games showing why we can’t just play 442 every week. Chit pitch not helping, few tactical changes we should win this, we are clearly the better side again so far

They're pressing is better than ours, but they'll run out of energy before we do. CJ will get more balls to him and run their socks off. Virtue needs to improve his passing - he's not looking fully match sharp yet.

Its been a scrappy battle on a poor pitch, they have been all over us giving us kittle room but we have improved as the half went on.

I think Critch will be pretty happy with that and I expect us to come out the better side in the second half with the chance for a change of tactics and some fresh legs. I'm quite happy with that.
Downhill second half

Passing accuracy 55 percent. I'm not usually too bothered about stats but that needs to be improved second half. I expect it will be.

Dougall has been a bit sloppy today. Still worth having on though, just wonder how his energy levels are with no rest games.

We've done ok on a poor surface. We've had the best chances and should be ahead probably. Virtue is playing some loose passes, but everybody is. He's been out for a long time and making his first league start I think? I think we'd have more compusure and threat going forward with Ward in his position.

We've opened them up a few times despite the problems.

Scrappy that, but it's clear why Accy are doing well.

I thought we just shaded the first half, and showed that little extra bit of quality they're lacking in creating the chances that we did.

The inevitable wrist slitting if we don't win this will be another over reaction; picking up a point here isn't the end of the world.

They are an old fashioned league 1 team, some massive units with a couple of flair players.

We need to put the back 3 under pressure even if it means going long, Yates and CJ will scare them to death.

Defended well but not much creativity .Too many misplaced passes when opportunities to open them up arose. The lino clearly flagged before we hit the post, possibly for a foul by CJ.

Brett's having his quietest game for a while. No real Brettisms yet that I noticed.

On the pitch we will grow stronger as the second half goes on. One goal will probably do it as we are very solid at the back

Accy looking the better team but overall it’s a poor game. Pitch & weather don’t seem to helping either side.
Disagree we have come close to scoring 3 times and they have hardly threatened. It is a tight pitch so our wingers are struggling and a lot of long punts are running out of play, on our pitch they would be perfectly weighted

a bit helter skelter again, too many misplaced passes. Accy look a decent side, but so far our back four have held out. we look a bit stretched in midfield, probably need to slow the game down a bit and play a bit of tiki taka and wear down their midfield a bit. Nottinghams had a decent game but you do get the feeling that he has a mistake in him.

It won't help CJ playing down the muddy side 2nd half.
Perhaps try and get Keshi in the game.
As everyone has spotted the passing has been sloppy and that's not just Virtue.

Hes not got tangled in his wires yet, split his brew or dropped his twirl.

He may though have parked his car in an area hard to locate, only time will tell.

This was always going to be a tough game, they are on a decent run, play to their strengths and the pitch is nearly always rough. Big second half coming up, come on Pool!

Virtue has been picked because we've viewed this as likely to be a battle rather than ideal keep ball conditions or opposition. And we've been right. I don't expect much will change second half and as many have said, one goal will probably decide it.

Conditions suit Accy
We are outnumbered in midfield
We need to change formation to match them up in there or trust they will run out of steam and we will start to exploit gaps behind their wing backs

Why TF would you want to transfer to Boris whilst watching the match hoping that just radio

No, not that one. Later on Madine hit a shot wide when clearly onside. When we hit the post the lino was flagging for a free kick to us but ref played on and we hit post..

You can see why they dont score all that many at home...too busy with chuntering, claiming for fouls that were never there and putting the ref under pressure. It only takes a moment if individual brilliance to change these kinds of games.

This ref is getting more and more fussy and the players as a result are playing up to it knowing he'll give a foul.
