Accrington Stanley v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 19.12.20

The pessimist in me has a bad feeling, we might have the "Champions League syndrome" where we put too much into that massive game midweek and we'll be spent on Saturday.

Maybe I'm just trying to not let myself get carried away. If we beat these it'll prove our mental resilience as well as quality in the squad, can't wait for it regardless of my pessimism! COME ON THE POOL 🍊

2 in form teams who will probably cancel each other out. Although an awesome move like our third goal vs Hull could win us the game.

Accrington 0-1 Pool

Looking at their results and they haven't really had any results against teams in the top half (bar Fleetwood and a draw against Lincoln). Not saying they've had easy games, as there is no such thing in this league but we a certainly more than capable of turning these over.

they have only beaten one decent team - Peterborough all season.
I've checked their results and you are right again. They beat Fleetwood too. But we have beaten Peterborough, Hull and Portsmouth, the top 3, and Fleetwood. And we should have beaten Lincoln and Doncaster, 4th and 6th. And Charlton, 7th, struggled against our 9 men.

We are surely a top 6 side in waiting. If we can beat the top 3 teams we are probably even better than that.

Really looking forward to this one and it will be interesting to see who we start with. Rotation maybe not as crucial with the Sunderland game off but I think Kaikai needs a break.
For what it's worth I would go with an attack minded formation today although NC may feel differently.
Maxwell
Gabriel, Ekpiteta, Gretarsson, Garbutt
Hamilton, Ward, Dougall, Anderson
Yates, Madine.

Accrington play a 3-5-2 system so got be careful not to be out manned in midfield so NC might reflect that so Yates or Madine might make way for Anderson and have Kaikai/Kemp in your 11.

I like that line up but I would like to see Garbutt given licence to attack and I'd maybe stick Husband in behind him, leaving Anderson to come off the bench. If you have Husband in there you can also adapt to a back 3 if Gabriel is attacking.

That's my thought too. Give Kaikai Christmas off and bring him back refreshed in the new year. I've said before I'd like to see a Hubby/Garby combo on the left. I see no reason to rest CJ yet, he's like the Duracell bunny. The one defensive pairing we've yet to see is Ballard and Viking but there's no reason to split up our two permanent CBs when they're playing so well together and do wonder if Ballard's going to remain as backup for the remainder if his time with us. I'd keep Dougall for this one last time before giving him a well earned rest and bring in MJ next week.

Oh and 4 4 2 please Mr Critchley. I know you set out a team for the opposition but I do think Jerry and Gary Goals give us the more potent force in the box...

Seems to have been an overnight plunge on us to win. Was 11/8 last night now even money with Bet365. Do they know something we don’t?

We have beat the current top 3 in the last few weeks, not surprising really, we will of gone in a few accas

Accrington flood the midfield so no surprise to see a 433/451

Accrington have a youthful squad full of premier league loanees doing very well. They also have players with points to prove throughout. They’re very dangerous however if we can get an early goal or dominate possession and play hopefully their confidence and youthful spirit can be broken. They have goals throughout their squad too and Dion Charles will likely up his game against us!

Hopefully it will be a decent game between 2 sides in good form. It will have been a long time since we will have gone into a game on such a good run of form so on that basis I think we will nick it.

Probably will be played on a pretty heavy pitch after all the rain this week tho.

I think when Madine came on against Hull we became more effective up front but we started to lose the midfield. With Accy playing three in the middle, I think Madine will be sacrificed again. I reckon Anderson may start.
So the lineup:
Maxwell
Garbutt
Ekpiteta
Gretarsson
Turton
Dougall
Robson
Woodburn
Anderson
Yates
Hamilton

That's not my preferred lineup, but what I think it will be. I think Critch will want to match Accy up in midfield. That front six is the one that dominated Portsmouths midfield (with the exception of Kaikai for Woodburn)

6 points from top spot with 4 games in hand and still nobody fancies Accy. I'd take their league position now ahead of any other side. Looking forward to this one.

If they play 3 at the back CJ will roast them and they’ll get nothing going down their left side as they’ll be covering him.

Yeah, memories of that night with the Jay Spearing penalty and then their keeper getting booted off after “flare-o-gate” 😀
It was a beer bottle wasn’t it?

Missed it completely at the time as too busy celebrating the penalty then the red card came out. He had actually had a good game up to that point!!

Interesting team news. Viking not involved, Virtue starting in place of Kaikai and Cole and Yorke up front.

Blackpool make three changes from the midweek win against Hull.
IN: Ballard, Virtue and Madine
OUT: Gretarsson, Robson and Kaikai
TEAM: Maxwell, Turton, Ekpiteta, Ballard, Garbutt, Dougall, Virtue, Anderson, Hamilton, Yates, Madine
