Blackpool v Everton Matchday Thread 24.07.22

Defence hopeless. Like they weren't concentrating and still on holiday. They were so slow, they looked like the action replay for at least two of their goals.
And don't anyone start talking about how many players we were missing. The law of averages, together with Sods Law of course, means it's likely that we won't have all of our first choice players in the team for any single game.
The squad needs strengthening.

Virtue had another decent game. Carey struggled but got into it in the final half-hour.

Kenny has to be careful. That pivot position needs to be used to get the ball forward in this formation and he's got a mindset of square and back atm. I don't think we're struggling in midfield though, there's more pressing problems elsewhere.
Watching a different game to me. Virtue was anonymous, did nothing either going forward or defensively in the first half. Not his fault he’s not good enough, far far too slow. He looks like he runs with concrete boots on. Name another championship team he would get in

Good work out. Lots of positives - Sonny, Moore, Thornily, Virtue, Bowler all playing well. Think with Sonny and the City lad (who's name escapes me 🙈) in the centre that's the creativity sorted. Thought Connolly was superb again. Must be a starter
I thought Connolly was head and shoulders better than any other defender today, even when he had two to mark at the back post. Otherwise, the defence looked all over the place.

If we get stuck in with intelligence, mix it with the best of them, and don't give anyone too much respect ... and play the attacking aggressive football that MA said - then I think we'll be ok. We could do with a couple more additions ... and Moore and Apter look up to it.

Played some good stuff after the first 20 mins, but defensively we were very naïve and they were clinical. The starting line up for next Saturday is looking like it’s taking shape but we all know where the weaknesses are.

Bowler wins so many corners free kicks throw ins from dangerous areas he’s irreplaceable

He can take the ball from our box into theirs quickly completely altering the state of play

He’s got his flaws he sometimes gives it away in dangerous areas but he creates so much

He was on his game today

Yep in defence, midfield and up front

I'd be happy with Husband when we need to play more defensively and Garbutt when we're playing teams that don't pose as much of a threat wide. But I don't want to spend the season praying that Husband stays healthy. We need cover there.

Quite clear we need full backs on both sides but Moore didn’t look out of place and Gabriel will be back soon.

Think we can only afford one of Carey/Fiorini otherwise the midfield is too fragile. Id give Carey the nod there as Fiorini hasn’t shown me anything to tell me he’s going to make it in the Championship - wasted some good opportunities today when others found him. I thought Virtue looked decent again today - gives the midfield plenty of energy and is the only midfielder who is truly box-to-box. I’d play him with one of Connolly/Dougall/Stewart.

Left wing is a vacancy up for grabs really. Could do with a new signing there. Madine has a role to play but I don’t think he should be plan A.

I’d be looking for a full back for each side, another box-to-box midfielder and a left winger.

Different opinions innit. Let's see how it plays out over the course of the season.

What makes you say Fiorini isn't box-to-box? He's got some settling in to do and maybe shouldn't be starting week 1, but the creative passing and confident defending are both there. He looks more willing to get back to defend than Carey does.

I think Fiorini looks promising and at least he’s willing to have a dig. I’d play Dougall, Fiorini and Carey.

Bowler was great, Anderson disappointing. I’d be interested to see Jerry play on the left of a three if we’re going to play Madine up top.

Some of the defending was atrocious but we’re operating with a makeshift defence, hopefully that won’t be the case for too long.

Garbutt is getting pelters again despite a) only just getting over an injury and b) being in the exact same situation as at the start of the previous season where we’re playing without a RWB and as a result are lop sided yet again. Garbutt is at his best when playing in the same squad as Gabriel. Tactics and teams require balance in order to be effective. We’re not in that position yet.
When Garbutt is fully fit, match fit and playing regularly he is not good enough. Thought he was average in League1 when he was playing every game.

Wasn’t too bad. First half we looked like we were struggling with the formation. Defending was awful tho which highlights the issue at full back.

Wouldn’t pick Williams over Keogh or Virtue over Dougall. Bowler and Keshi I would like to see further forward. Not sure we have the players for the formation just yet.

Well 2 things to get sorted out:
A RB and a LB.
High press. Critch had a well drilled high pressing system, despite the infamous defensive aproach of a 4-4-2. Those 3 upfront need to provoke errors more often.
Appy said something on the line of "we're working on attacking and having possesion but Leeds, rangers, and Everton Will not let us have it" but You need to be able to win the ball back pretty often if You want to play attacking possesion football.
No we can cover both till Gabriel and Hubbie are back, no point buying a, squad filler

I was watching same game as Kip
Considering the quality of the opposition I thought Virtue did well and hopefully will play a big part this season.
Virtue was trying to push us forward while still playing DM, when replaced by Dougall who I rate highly the sideways and backward passes increased.
Some games will suit Virtue and some Dougall

For me Keshi plays whether that's on the left or in the middle as he does offer something even if he frustrates at times aswell. Ideally I'd have him I the middle and bring in another winger for the left. It's hard to judge with players missing or settling in though and I don't think Garbutt helped much but again just coming back from injury.
I think we need a striker though

Hes not quick enough to be on the left

I know Dougall only had a 10 min run out, but consistently played with his back to goal meaning his only route was back passing.

Liking the young lad Moore, but he needs to sit in a room with Bowler and together work out when and where to pass to each other, as I think they are onto a decent partnership if they can sync their thoughts.

Connoly, as per usual played with grit , he’s going to be our Mr. Dependable this season.

Getting Marv back in the back four is an absolute must.
pre season or not we looked over exposed and shaky at the back and all at sea at times.

Being on the wrong side of 50 now, I cannot stand a full season of living on the edge every time the opposition stream forward.

Many have said, some positives to be taken, but still , a little worryingly several more negatives floating around.
Totally agree with everything you have said.

Nah, Garbutt has consistently fallen short at Championship level throughout his career, he was third choice under Critchley. We need better as we don't know how many games Husband will be available for this season.
I don’t think he was third choice. He was first choice until he was injured or we lacked a RWB through injuries and therefore playing with a LB and RB was preferred.

I know my opinion is becoming less and less widely shared but I think Garbutt is our best LWB and I think we’re a much better team with him in it - BUT that does also require is to also be playing with a proper RWB too.

My take after sitting down with a few pints. There were two teams on the pitch and Everton had better players than us.
First half we looked absolutely clueless and not at the races. Garbutt was absolutely awful, never mind a right back, the quicker we get Husband back the better. Having said that he got precious help from Anderson, whose seemed to be auditioning for the role as The Invisible Man. Bowler, where on earth was he playing in the first half ? Almost as if he was told at half time, forget defending and get on the ball, without him as things stand we are goosed.
Virtue not good enough, Kenny came on and still prefers going backwards. Fiorini only his second match i'll reserve judgement.
A blind man can see Yates is a better option in a 433 than Madine, who in my opinion should have been gone.
Two full backs, another midfielder and someone with a goal threat as a bare minimum and that's if Bowler stays. Other than that there is a seriously long season ahead.
So Ben Mansford, get your finger out your arse and get the players we need in now.

You talk a lot about the first half. What about the second? Bowler was excellent. Carey played his part and overall we tightened up and played well.

I think I mentioned that Bowler may have been given a different role second half. Think I mentioned that without Bowler's creativity we are goosed.
Other than that spot on.
Edit to add , think all 4 goals came from Garbutt's side, so hecertainly didn't improve, but Moore could be a player.

I think they just played crap so the scout from Reading gives them all the wrong information.
Next week we'll play totally different
