Blackpool v Swansea Official Matchday Thread 13.08.22

Next six games coming up and I can’t see us taking many points from them, if I’m honest I’d say 5 or 6 points out of 18 potentially at best (prediction in brackets), but if we come away with less then changes have to be made.

QPR away 16/8. (L)

Burnley away 20/8. (L)

Bristol City home 27/8. (W)

Blackburn home 31/8. (D)

Huddersfield away 4/9. (D)

Boro home 10/9. (D)

I just hope I’m proved wrong 😑
I think even those draws are a bit pie in the sky based on our current form.

In defence of Bowler, Jerry had momentarily strayed offside at a crucial moment (it still should have been sorted though!)

That's as maybe but Grimshaw is the better keeper so for me that's irrelevant.
Expected something more considered from you Fess. His constant passing to defenders ended them to press and really put us under pressure. Maxwell can quickly bowl a ball out to the wingers to get a move going.

That said, he is the better keeper.

Sorry to disappoint 66 bit hot and bothered tonight ( and grumpy) after the game.

Not bothering to start a thread on it but I do not like Grimshaw's distribution. I prefer Maxwell's.
It's a fair point - but I reckon Grimmys shot stopping is way (way) ahead - and Maxwell just hoofed it out of the box, which is sometimes the best thing to do. It's Grimmy for me - but all opinions valid.

Last season too Phil.
Even a blind squirrel finds the odd nut(Bournemouth home, Stoke away)
TBF if he had a final ball he wouldn't be here but to big him up like some do is laughable.
,,,and to put him down like some do is equally laughable.

We played well today, all you negative wankers need to bore off.
There are a lot moaning some valid but mostly over reaction.
There are however some who can never see a positive at BFC and seem to get kudos from wanting owner to leave, manager sacked, and half the team dismantled.
Bowler by his own admission did not have his best game, but crucifying him on a so called fans forum is utterly unbelievable.

Yeh sorry we now not allowed to criticise someone who excites us but has very little end product
no need to apologise. But of you think one end of the spectrum is laughable then the other end is equally so. And let's face it, he's one our players, our most saleable asset so what would you rather be? A fan of one our players or a critic.

The way he played today, a critic
All he needs is a final ball, either a pass or decent shot on target.
He'll then gets the move he so desperately wants and we'll hopefully obtain enough funds to strengthen the team.

and i've been critical of him today on more than one thread. But of course you deflect. You say in your reply that today you are being a critic and that's fair enough. But if we are talking about todays game where are all these posts bigging him up which you say is laughable? Pretty much everyone has criticised him for todays performance.

Good of you to go hunting for it for us. I'd dont think I'd do the same on your forum! In fact I've never visited your forum!
Just found it odd that from all the games today it’s the only one not showing

Your welcome to join us anytime over on the Lowecomotion 🚂

Enjoyed that Matt, you put a different perspective on things when the dust settles.
I'm still pissed off with Bowler though and it seems like an eternity before Micky big arms will get his elusive runny yolk👍🏻

Put this elsewhere but here’s my take from yesterday….

First half was pretty appalling. If we’d have gone in 3-0 down at half time we could have no complaints. It was like watching a training game. Swansea had as much time as they liked to knock it about and find a pass. Fortunately the passing and finishing from Swansea wasn’t good enough to get a goal. The boos at half time were perfectly justified.

Second half was a real transformation. The high tempo and high press was incredibly effective. Thompson did brilliantly linking up with Lavery and Fiorini, Yates and Lavery were excellent pressing Swansea high up the pitch. It was noticeable in the second half that most of our attacks came down the left and Bowler wasn’t actually that heavily involved. When he was it wasn’t due to any great skill but because someone else had stolen the ball from Swansea on the break. Bowler really needs to consider signing a new contract here - he won’t play in the Premier League and he still really needs to develop his decision making skills. A move now to another club even in the Championship could destroy his career by seeing him back on the bench and playing reserve team football.

Things of note for me from the game:

Why such a slow start ? I blame the manager and tactics for the first half - it’s Appletons responsibility to ensure the players leave the dressing room with zero doubts as to the game plan and what is required from the first second to the last.

We can look very one dimensional at times when we constantly look to Bowler for our attacks. It makes us predictable and therefore very easy to defend against. It also puts a lot of pressure on arguably our most talented player and makes his life a lot harder.

Fiorini is much better suited to playing higher up the pitch than at the base of a midfield 3. Dougall brings balance to the midfield when played at CDM. Carey is yet to find his feet playing as a true CM. He’s probably better suited to playing higher up the pitch but we need someone to fill that central role - likely it will be Patino or someone we’re yet to sign as we currently look light weight in the middle.

Jerry Yates and Lavery have excellent movement. Thompson has started finding them with some great passes and Gabriel will do that too. Better decision making from Bowler and we score 2/3 goals yesterday. I’m not concerned about finding the goal but we do need the mixture of power and pace to give us more variety - a striker in the mould of Simms is a must.

Marvin looks a little unsure now he’s being asked to be the main man in defence. He’s a man mountain and top defender but maybe lacks the intelligence to compliment his brilliant physical attributes. Keogh and Marv complimented each other - Marv and Williams less so - perhaps Husband is the answer at LCB.

3 players are definitely needed, ideally 4. More if Bowler goes.

Pacey and Powerful Striker
Central Midfielder with more presence
Back Up Right Back
Another option on the wing (Rogers?)

don't know but did we even win the toss? It might not have been our choice to make.

Swansea kicked off first half so we must of decided on the changed ends ?
Seemed odd decision given that we hardly attacked much in the first half. Unless some “weather” related decision - shadow lengths / suns position ?

Appleton said in his presser last week 'we have to show Swansea respect because of the way they play' .. and sadly that's exactly what we did.

My Summary, First half we sat too far back and gave them too much respect (I was spitting feathers at the time), second half we competed and got in their faces. Some of the one touch football was wonderful. Decision making in the final 3rd cost us. really happy with the second half performance and thought Kenny looked back to his old self. MOM Dom Thompson but massive shout out to Shayne for his work rate and closing down.

Grimmy was in the shade in the first half. That's about all I could see that was different.

I thought Lavery and Yates both played petty well and the forward line will improve and goals will come as 433 beds in, unless we lose Josh of course.

The midfield isn't there yet. Fiorini has some really good attributes which need maximising - his good spells are great. Dougall is returning to his best form and we need to work out the third person. At the moment we have third person plural. Sorry.
