Carey

How it was a red card is still a bemusement. In our half - stopped the lad with a cyncical takedown (a la 6 that Stoke did at Bloomers in the first half last season)

The ref knew that it was not dangerous nor violent conduct as Maatsen managed to sprint 15 yards to charge into Carey like a 5 year old who discovers someone had licked their fruitywinder.

The quality bit from Carey was spotting the danger and making that split second judgement to 'break up play'.
In essence the Ref bottled it and will be ringing Mike Dean for the correct wording on the match report to justify the red to Carey. The foul by Carey (and it was a foul) was less cynical than when Gabriel was ploughed into from behind in the first half and the ref waved play on. (Obvs, the ref's thought may have been taking account of local custom regards the taking of sheep from behind).

Maatsen's childish throwing his finger tape and wristbands out of the pram on the walk to the tunnel was one of the most embarrassing things I've seen in a professional footballer (Even taking into account Malkin colecting his wage packet)

The Appleton effect at the end of the game was clear to see. All (most) of the team 'discussed' things with the Ref. Last season, the Aston Villa Brewmaker would have waved the players away and been all "thanks Mr Ref, sir" Appleton stood back and then briefly shook hands with the Ref - with his eyes drilling away

Was a red imo. Yes he might have taken one for the team, I would acknowledge that, but the midfield situation is absolutely dire now as a result.

Sorry, but it was serious foul play and justified the sending off. No intention of playing the ball.
No it wasn’t, he did not endanger an opponent and it wasn’t a goal scoring opportunity. The cynical fouls happen week in week out. Spurs b Chelsea last week, exact same on Son. It can only be a yellow under the laws of the game.

I can only assume its because its at a height of sort. He's sort of swiping upwards getting towards the knee and thats what has convinced the ref? Its a yellow for me.A cynical foul to stop the counter its not crunching, there is minimal contact, not much aggression about it.Its a tug of the shirt in sliding form.

With a level of respect due:
Law 12: A player is guilty of serious foul play if he uses excessive force or brutality against an opponent when challenging for the ball when it is in play. A tackle that endangers the safety of an opponent must be sanctioned as serious foul play. Maatsen was like a dancing unicorn 1 second later

It wasn,t a tackle that could or would of endangered him so therefore it was only a yellow, and i am sure it was in the burnley half near to halfway line ,only my opinion of course

Nothing surprises me with Keith Stroud and his snap decision making after he let Matt Taylor get away with trying to break Dan Ballard's neck in the play off second leg against Oxford when Robinson sent his lot out to leave a bit on ours.

I thought a yellow and a warning but we'll just have to see if the club have got word whether there's solid grounds for an appeal.

All the radio lancs commentators (including the ex Burnley player) were amazed that Carey received a red.
They all agreed the Burnley Hot Head deserved his though.

The referee bottled it and it even looked for a while he might not send the Burnley player off.

Definitely no more than a yellow. Took one for the team. If the Burnley player doesn’t retaliate and the ref doesn’t shit himself it’s only a yellow

Took one for the team for sure - debatable red - kicked him good n proper.
Good news that the idiot responded - SC should sue for assault or whiplash ;)
Agree that he spotted the danger and took action - maybe won us a point.
Get the lad a pint.

Should be fined by the Club. Has worsened an already dire situation in midfield. Discuss.

Must be on the Sangria with Spruce. What a load of crap.

It was a yellow card. He took one for the team as happens in the game and the ref completely lost his head.

Both Weller and Thommo on Lancs said it was an absolute howler from the ref.

Fcuk off you idiot!!!!

He 100% did the right thing
Never a red.
He was in the Burnley half, he wasn't the last man, it wasn't serious foul play, it was a professional foul and a yellow card.
He got sent off because the Dingle charged into him and everyone piled in so the referee lost his own head, got confused and thought it warranted a red card.
In fact he didn't even give Maatsen a red until the lino on the far side told him what had happened.
Edit to add.
It won't get over-turned if we appeal because referees aren't human and so there's no such thing as human (referee) error.

i hope you’re not being serious!

Watch it carefully, he goes to stretch for the ball, realizes he's not going to get it and then pulls out, I think the Burnley player clips his knee as he runs across him.

I'd like to see it from another angle, but I don't think it's as clear-cut as you think.

Just watched it back again. Carey made no attempt to play the ball at all. Both sendings off fully justified.
There is no rule which says not attempting to play the ball immediately equals a straight red.

These are the rules from from the FA site:
A player, substitute or substituted player who commits any of the following offences is sent off:
  • denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by a handball offence (except a goalkeeper within their penalty area)
  • denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent whose overall movement is towards the offender's goal by an offence punishable by a free kick (unless as outlined below)
  • serious foul play
  • biting or spitting at someone
  • violent conduct
  • using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or action(s)
  • receiving a second caution in the same match
  • entering the video operation room (VOR)
Clearly the only thing there you could file Carey's foul under would be "serious foul play" or "violent conduct". And as per the FA's rules both of these breaches hinge on there being "excessive force or brutality" which "endangers the safety of an opponent".

There is no ruling against cynical fouls.

Aston villa brewmaker 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Just a completely inconsistent ref. A red for Carey's challenge is the standard he is setting a professional foul. The push on bowler, when he was going through on goal merited a yellow. The straight through Gabriel challenge, studs high didn't even merit a foul, an earlier challenge on I think it was lavery as he was going through was waved away. That was one of the worst reffing performances I've seen in a long time and we've had some bad ones.
