CJ

Said he was still an asset and today showed what he can bring.

No one else can beat players with that pacw and no defenders can keep up with him.

He won't always get it right but a useful asset to have, especially now with Patino who will just ping a pass over the top for him.

Thats what you have to use him as, an in behind player. We never had anyone who could pick passes before really.

I said CJ to you at HT 😂 even though it may have been in jest. As long as you play a ball for him to run onto he will beat most for pace. We’ll done CJ & the whole team including Appleton.

When we first got him he was amazing and we were talking about a player who was going to e worth millions. The bad injury he got really set him back, but you don't lose that potential, I'm glad we have him in our squad.
He definitely has potential, he's another confidence player. He often looks scared on the ball and doesnt run at teams like he used to but I'm not surprised he's probably the most criticized player we have. With a few good performances under his belt and the supporters behind him he could be a completely different player

He's been so poor recently, but their high line helped him in giving him the space to run behind them and for once he sized up the situation and put in a decent ball straight to Yates who finished with aplomb.

I've always thought him as a confidence player and hopefully that gives him some.

A bit unfair to say he’s been ‘so poor recently’ when he’s only been on the pitch for 58 minutes in the league this season before today.
An average of 1.2 assists per game will do for me 👍.

Patino is the difference when he's on the pitch with CJ.
Charlie played to CJ's strengths today by sending him on runs into space, whereas the usual passes are into his feet which then ends up in CJ facing backwards with the ball - what a difference it made
Yep. It’s not rocket science. Pass it into a bit of space. He will beat most defenders in a sprint. Faced with a 50:50 challenge or urgent close control, he will invariably lose possession. His crossing is usually on the money. Pleased for him.

I saw 90 mins of him against Barrow.
He was awful then, but clearly can at times add something.

Let's face it, not a lot of good crossing happens and we're not usually clinical from the wings.

If CJ fits the game or circumstances he can add something no one else can. He can find good crosses, did the same vs Reading for Bowlers volley goal last season plus some others, set bez up in a friendly this pre season, a fantastic cross today.

Given some of the shite crosses we've seen, at times I'd rather see if he can do something. It won't always work but when does it.

We now have Patino who will put balls in behind for him and no one else is likely to get onto them or has the pace to.

It's an asset to have which we can use.

Absolutely. I hope he turns out to be brilliant for us.

Another confidence player. What he does really well is he keeps his head up when looking for the cross rather than just banging it into an area. Hope he pushes on and repays Appleton's faith in him.
He's an outlet too, if team push too far up Patino can pop one over and he'll be in.

Doesn't mean he will score always, although we've seen he can at times, or provide crosses.

Just needs a bit more consistency.

But you know what, watching our 2nd goal, the ball from Patino to him isn't the best one, it's down the line but at least stays in.

But the great things is he holds off the guy, get the ball under control and brings it back up the pitch, turns and has a little touch away from their player and drifts past him to put a great cross in.

So it's not even like he was just put in behind and ran onto it all pace and no skill, he actually created it all himself and had to show good touch, strength, awareness, speed and then hit the cross right.

That makes it more impressive.

For all the criticism he can get, how many places could that move have broken down for other players, we've seen it many times.

He's not played in a while and came on and got it all right there.

Impressive tbh.

Had a couple of other moments where we had half chances after he ran at them.

Could just be that Appleton has had plenty of time to look at the squad , assess their strengths and coach them , encourage them to play to those strengths .
Would-be refreshing to have a manager putting the square players in the square holes and the round ones in the round holes . The Pool revolution

Well yeah, another thing that improves over time.

As said on another thread, the start of the season was not us, players missing with injuries, we always seem to start slow anyway, new manager getting to know players, new players settling in, current players gelling with new ones and also all playing a new style with a depleted squad and having to play a different formation to the new one at times.

But now we're looking a lot better in the last few games, forming partnerships across the pitch.

Still had those bad spells today after we scored where we went crap, but came out 2nd half much better, Bridcutt helped.

It’s coming together.

I’m not his biggest fan, but he did well yesterday.

Great pick-out cross for the goal but if that was us defending I would be appalled. Their guy is close to him then completely drops off and leaves him so much time to cross with no pressure on the ball.

the amusing thing for me was that in the west concourse prior to the game I was talking to a guy up here on holiday who was a season ticket holder Mansfield fan. Conversation got round of course to CJ and the guy said he could be either very good or very bad and I asked what he meant by the first phrase as it's not something I've seen. Anyway, no doubt he enjoyed the game and I expect if he'd seen me after the game he'd have made me eat my words.

Anyway credit to CJ today and perhaps more importantly to Appleton too. Is there anyone who really wouldn't have thought about bringing Poveda on before CJ?

They had Gosling playing full back and he couldnt cope with CJs pace. They then made a substitution and moved a more mobile player to right back and C J left him standing as well!

Yep really bad, but CJ has just come on and the guy sticks with him at first then weirdly let's him go.

Maybe he was a bit tired and he knew CJ has the beating of him when he went past him so thought he couldn't catch him and gave up. You want your player sprinting there not casually jogging.

But who cares.
think it was because instead of running back to help out Sierralta just strolled back .
Billic was furious Sierralta ripped his shirt off and threw it at the bench lol

Having seen it again, it interesting that CJ looks up before crossing. He's done that many times before. Basic, I know, but it shows he has time and not many others in the team, if any, do that.

If some players have multiple positions, like Connelly for example, then CJ has one, and one only. Play him there or play him nowhere.

Miserable twunt
ah right, so how many games does he have to play before I'm allowed to say I don't really rate him? Just wondering! Some people seem to think every player is beyond criticism, And yep, you are one!

I've been deservedly (in my view) critical of CJ in the past and nothing would please me more for the guy to shove my words right down my gullet.
If you're a wide player with pace just pin your ears & go for it - cause mayhem - something will happen ... & the worst case will probably be a corner.

Kabasele giving up was indefensible.

I don't believe we've a single player in our team who would give up like that. We may not always play well, we may even be dreadful and totally disorganised, but we're not lazy or workshy. Can anyone imagine any one of our back four not busting a gut to get a block in?

Great to see CJ make good use of the time and space and pick out Jerry though. Hope he can get back to his best, and he could be a useful sub to bring on against tiring legs.
