Colby Bishop

So if he sign him who are the forwards making way ? At a guess Yates or Madine ! I've got a feeling Bishop will be a good signing and will be Hungry to do well

It'd be pure guesswork (sorry to state the obvious but I can't think of another way of starting).
MA knows our strikers from previous seasons, and since taking over, from the training sessions / friendlies / Scottish week. He will have formed strong opinions of them all, based on their attitude, fitness, application, contribution and skill. The only ones who will be aware of his thoughts are his coaches and maybe the board.
I'm sure we'll soon find out who MA thinks is time to loan out or move on.
Edit: After that game, Shane looks most in jeopardy but Gaz is too static & Jerry can't play the lone striker role.

Not to overreact to one pre-season friendly, but it's hard to see how Lavery has a role in this team, assuming Appleton's tied to a 4-3-3. He's not quite up to the standard of our other forwards in terms of link-up play. It's a shame because in the box he's probably the best of the bunch.

Bolton?

If this happens then why didn't we cut out the middle man in January and just sign him instead of Jake Beesley?

Bishop a good lad. Not a goal machine but more prolific and mobile than the one we already have. Anticipation needs to be there in a centre forward I think rather than doing the link up bit and then not being there for the finish.

I think it will be Beesley, know he's injured but he should be back before the end of the transfer window and can see him going out on loan to a League 1 club towards the end of August. Bishop is a big lad physical lad, so I would think that it would be either Madine or Beesley and Beesley is the obvious choice out of thoes.

Accrington turned down a £1.2m bid from Peterborough for him in January. Seem like we went in late for him after hearing that he was now alot cheaper.

Wouldn't shock me at all if it was Beesley. We've seen him trying to crowbar Lavery into another position though and he can't have liked the results so far.

Lavery is an odd one. He struggles with link play. He really never clicked with a partner last year either. I'd have thought Appleton would fancy him in the middle and Yates wider but he obviously likes the fact Jerry can really play and thus goes with him central.

It's still odd though as on paper alone, I'd have put Lavery down as the player to start on his own up front of all of our forwards as he's more bullish than Yates and if he'd not fall over quite so much, I think he'd cause problems.

Ah, that would explain it. Yep wouldn't be surprised to see Beesley maybe go the other way.

Who knows. Yet to see clear logic this window apart from the one Appleton sorted out himself.

Lavery has a lot more fire in his belly that Yates who's always on the lash.

Bishop - hopefully some goals
Lavery - that last 20 mins when defenders are tired
Beesley - looked like a more pacy Madine
Madine - knows where the net is even if he can't run

Is he completely over his injury? Is he fit enough? Is it his confidence?
If he was a trialist, on that performance you’d have to say “No thanks.”

Are we getting Colby or not? Various media outlets differ.

He'd be mad not to come to us. Shop window for the Premier League.

Appleton confirmed to the Gazette after the match that if a striker is signed then one will leave to make room.

Genuinely don't know who it could be;

Yates will definitely stay
Madine doesn't fit the system but offers something different
Lavery has been very poor so I would assume it might be him
Beesley would be harsh due to his injury and the fact that he finished last year so well

Think it will honestly be Lavery, MA doesn't see him as someone who can play down the middle and if Morgan Rogers comes in than that's our LW sorted for the season.

Not read the whole thread but I agree about Lavery.
He looked superb with his work on the edge of the box, winning lost causes, and like any good striker he has a knack of being in the right place a lot of the time.
Sadly though (and bizarrely) his finishing let’s him down, and his link up play just seems to involve him making darting runs between the oppositions full back and centre back.
He misses sitters, and as much as I think making chances is the only way to score a goal, it’s frustrating to see this happen to him as prior to his injury, he was class.
I thought Yates looked out of form but he’s still got great footwork. I really don’t understand what’s happened to Lavery.
I think selling him would be a bad idea, send him on loan to a league one club, I think he just needs to get a refresher.

I'd still give Lavery time, personally, don't know what's going on but he was deadly for 5-10 games early season and I can't give up on him.

It's a tough one because they all potentially offer something, would have to be Beesley I suppose, especially since Bishop has a bit of height. Madine looks fit and motivated to me from the training videos and although I definitely don't want to see him starting as a lone striker he's a handy player to have + experience + team morale.

Yeh Madine has become a bit of a fan favourite. It’s odd coz he doesn’t exactly to cruyff turns or rabonas, but he is very good in the air and a punt upfield will often be won by him, for players to feed off. Long term I hope Beesley gets a good chance, he had a bit of instinct about him last season. Can’t really coach that.
I remember Liverpool fans said Fowler was shit, but he could score for toffees (against them too 😂) Took him a few years to develop his game. Both Jake and Shayne have potential.

Lavery is the only striker we have with pace and takes a far higher proportion of his chances than Jerry. Yet he doesn’t seem fit Appleton’s system …

Lavery had two good chances last night but failed to take them. If the new man (to be) had been presented with them
would he have scored ? There are ifs & buts for all our strikers, one or two may leave from the five we have at the moment.

The Shayne loving is weird, he’s shite
Some people have very short memories.
He was our top goalscorer last season, and his minutes per goal ratio was better than any other player and that’s without taking any penalties. He has also impressed for Northern Ireland.
He’s clearly out of form at the moment but that’s no reason to give up on him in my opinion.

Unless Jerry is being sold (as some stories have suggested) I would assume either Bez or Lavery would go out on loan.

It certainly sounds like there will be one out if Bishop signs.

Yates - will more than likely stay, he's on a long contract so will cost someone a bob or two. In my opinion he's the best we've got and has to stay.
Madine - again, likely to stay, not prolific by any standard, but offers something different.
Beesley - currently injured so unlikely to move at the moment, someone I'd like to see more of if I'm honest.
Lavery - well off at the moment, a loan might be the answer to try and regain his confidence/fitness.
Lubala - could leave for me, he seems to have done ok in pre-season but I'm not sure he's up to Championship level.

A front three of Bowler, Yates and Bishop may be interesting.

I think Appleton is looking to emulate Ollie and play a front 3 like Campbell, GTF and Brett. Not out and out wingers but forwards interchanging. Wouldn't be surprised to see CJ and Lavery moved on. Although Bowler is an out and out winger I'd play him as 1 of the 3 for his ability to beat a man. Having him roaming would make it hard for teams to double up on him.

I wouldn't describe Bowler, Lavery or CJ as out and out wingers. They all come inside the majority of the time, and none of them can cross a ball!

Errr No................

EXCLUSIVE: The Colby Bishop transfer saga has taken another twist - Blackpool’s move for the striker is now OFF. A fee and personal terms had been agreed, but The Gazette understands the Seasiders have decided not to pursue the move.
he guessed the away shirt would be white though 🤣

Bowler always looks good to me when he drifts into the centre. He picked up a few goals last season when he did so.
I also noticed in his cameo last night that he picked 2 or 3 nice passes through again from the 10 position.

Food for thought?

Our transfer dealings are pathetic. We nauls up this guy’s transfer to Portsmouth, then change our mind. We’re being led a dance by Shamrock Rovers over a full back nobody had heard of and missed out on other players we supposedly had an interest in. Meanwhile the players we do have prove in pre match friendlies that the majority of them aren’t good enough.

Not a good summer.
