Derbyshire Police at it again

If they did go straight for reading them their rights then it seems to be not in line with the general advising route that police forces were adopting. What we don’t know is what was actually said by the two women when challenged....which may have led the police down this path of action.
This week on radio lancs a police representative did say that in terms of educating people who make genuine mistakes that would continue, but now we’ve been living with it for 9 months he expected these to be far and few between and for the policing to be more robust.

Don’t know where they live, but I doubt they needed to drive 5 miles for a walk. Having said that, it’s probably safer for them and others if they’re walking in the countryside.

My thoughts exactly why did they drive 5 miles to then walk? 🤔

Friend of mine works for LCC as a driver and was gritting the roads around beacon fell yesterday and said the car park was that packed people were parking on the road making his job very difficult indeed.

People shouldn’t be driving 5/10/20/30 miles just to do a walk simples.

Driving 5 miles out of the suburbs for a walk in the countryside. £400 in fines? It seems a bit draconian. Derbyshire must have a Chief Constable B’stard* in charge. You can drive 5 miles to your local supermarket, I believe?

I realise the police are targeting local beauty spots to prevent people congregating but if these two were alone it sounds overly officious. And when did a cup of coffee constitute a picnic? Whatever PC Plod decides, I suppose. Which is a problem with these rushed through regulations.

*Edit: The new Chief Con is the woman with the odd hairstyle...

Less people, less chance of spreading/catching the virus?
Fair enough but Ive edited my post now surely that can’t be right though ref beacon fell?

Was the same at Brecon Beacons on New Year’s Day people were driving as far away as London FFS. 😮

But it's not what the law says.

Instead of harassing people in numbers at car parks OUTDOOORS, why don't they have a few in supermarkets, you know, INDOORS.

The problem, as with most instructions from this government, is they are not clear. There is no definition of 'local'. I would say 5 miles is not unreasonable. 250 miles certainly is!

I Totally agree about supermarkets and for me I think that’s we’re the problem of catching the virus clearly is because where else can it be?

But the government should have made it perfectly clear what driving a short distance for shopping/exercise actually is because to some driving an hour is a short distance and like someone above has already mentioned if you live in a rural area it might be a 10/15 mile trip to a supermarket but you would still be ok as it’s classed as essential shopping but drive 10/15 to do a walk and your suddenly out of order with the old bill. 😮🤔

Agree about supermarkets, I read somewhere that they are one of the main places the virus spreads. There’s virtually no social distancing, or one way systems being adhered to now.

Agree, it's the equivalent of issuing a speeding ticket, minimal effort , maximum gain on the part of the police - keeps the stats healthy. Those two women seem very responsible citizens. There should be something tangible that people can understand, like a ten mile radius of your place of abode that you can drive to.
I would prefer to see the police at the entrance to shops questioning non-mask wearers, perhaps handing out masks to those that don't have them, this would definitely up the compliance

Sorry Lythco, I posted the same article, hadn't seen this thread. Since when did the law include 'Not in the spirit of things'?! Not to mention no legal definition of what travelling for exercise in your local areas means exactly. Utterly ridiculous and I hope they fight the fine, not a chance I'd be paying it and would fight it all the way, bell ends.

Also the police must have some shit picnics.

It was this force that gloated over fining people parked up at Stanage Edge in the last lockdown.

Aye, two shite coffees from an overpriced chain doth not make a picnic.
Seems like they've gone for soft targets to make some quick money - like I said, not a cat in hell's chance I'd pay it, plus I'd have argued the toss with them there and then before complaining to the force.

As a retired Derbyshire Plod, I do know the trials and tribulations that have been endured over lockdown, and the vast majority of officers have been sympathetic, considerate and helpful. There is always a minority who haven't, but in their defence, it has been very one sided reporting without full facts been made available.

The other problem is what distance is defined 'reasonable'? For rehabilitation purposes I need 3 long walks a week, and to do this safely, I need access to the Countryside. I only have to travel about 10 miles where I have a massive choice of walks of varying degrees, which don't compromise anyone else, with virtually no personal contact with Joe public.

My son is a serving officer in the same Force and even he cannot give me a definitive answer on this matter.

No legal policy then plus 'Not in the spirit of things' certainly has no place in law either. Police on very shaky ground, but obce again the government are to blame for not making guidelines crystal clear.

Heavy handed bullshîte from Derbyshire Police. Putting their own interpretation on the rules (which aren’t specific). I don’t think 5 miles is unreasonable. I’d still class that as local. It’s like going from Cleveleys into South Shore. Local.
These Police need re-educating. Also a complete waste of resources to be lurking in beauty spots to dish out fines. 1 outdoor exercise a day, said Boris.

You're nicked. They've driven 5 miles.

Three walks a week, sounds like you’re on the mend Bendit .

I have to agree.

However 'Heavy handed BS' is not fair as I alluded to in my previous post. The several incidents involving short journeys which resulted in Plod and Mountain Rescue turning out to rescue some of these idiots, Im sure they feel a certain justification.

5 miles is reasonable surely?
Yes, of course it's reasonable... Not that it matters.

If the reason you are out of your house is to take exercise, then you are fine.... You can't fine someone based upon "The spirit of the law"... The Scottish have clearly defined the distance you can travel from home and therefore it is perfectly possible to define the Law in absolute terms... So no need for any 'spirit of the law' just the 'actual' Law will do 👍

How far can you travel in Scotland then?

The government said the other day, no more warnings, it's immediate fines from now on.

We are in a national emergency. It's the only way people will change their behaviour. Been too soft throughout so far and paid the price in lost lives.

Well I traveled 1 1/2 miles today & had a walk. My dog may wish to have another later & he’ll get it as it’s outside & nowhere near anyone. So fuck them. I suppose I could walk him to Morrison’s 😬

At least its defined. I feel a bit sorry for the coppers here. Shouldn't be up to them to define what is reasonable.
They don't have to define what is reasonable... They simply have to determine what the purpose of you being outside your homw is.... If the purpose is to exercise, then that 'by definition' is reasonable.

Fair points. Still think the guidelines are ambiguous mind.

'THE RULES'

The BBC contacted the Cabinet Office, Home Office, College of Policing and National Police Chiefs' Council to ask for clarification over what they define as "local area" in relation to exercise. None could clarify this.
However, the College of Policing said: "In overall terms police officers across England and Wales will be using their discretion and professional judgement about whether or not someone has a reasonable excuse for travelling for exercise and being outside the place where they are living."

Fines for what though? They were following the rules.
In China, one person from a household, was allowed out once every 2 weeks, just for food. That's a lockdown.

Police said "Driving to a location - where exercise could easily have been taken closer to a person's home - is clearly not in the spirit of the national effort to reduce our travel."

What if they had a crash on the way there? We are in a national emergency where hospital beds are about to disappear. Need to get tough now or the next month death figures will be grim.
