England v Denmark Official Matchnight Thread 07.07.21

Schmeichel was superb in my opinion. Have to give him credit for that.
Schmeichel, has been superb for the majority of the tournament. Not as good as his dad but he just comes across a genuine person. Liked his comments re its coming home, brilliant.

You know, being an older cynical type who was 7 when England won the World Cup and probably spending half the game bored and playing in the alley next to Grandma and Grandad’s house on Gorton Street whilst everyone was inside, lucky enough to be able to watch on a black and white telly!

It’s easy to sneer at all the news pictures of youngsters going ape, chucking ale in the air and generally going bananas! I’m used to England promising so much and delivering very little over the years, but the youngsters don’t have that monkey on their back, this is all brand new and a brand new experience.

It’s a new world, it belongs to the young, it’s time for England to give them some great memories, so for their sake more than my frizzled soured own, come on England, lets get the job done!
I love that post, well said sir. 👍

In my hotel room reading this thread in its entirety, having just researched the match on tv. I'll skip the easy to say once it's all over platitudes and just say that we were magnificent tonight - team, fans, manager, everything came together. One country under a flag. The objective if you make a semi final is to progress, and we've done that for the first time since '66. Count those years.

In the stadium the effort, skill and togetherness of the Danes came over loud and clear. They were proper worthy opponents, never going to just lie down for us, and so it played out. Easy maybe for us all to ask why we are not cavalier enough, but Sir Gareth of Southgate is a Roundhead at heart, and ask yourself, who won that war?

So, objective achieved, and an even bigger challenge faces us on Sunday in the shape of the Italians, the best team in the tournament ....... so far. A classic final in the making.

As td53 would say - onward! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

The best team won on the night whatever debates anyone has about the penalty, so England fully deserve to be in the Final. The other semi-final was different though imo. Yes Italy have been very good throughout this tournament but were extremely lucky to beat Spain with only 30% possession. England will need to sharpen up their finishing in the Final, as they missed several opportunities against Denmark - particularly the Sterling miss, which at the highest level you need to put away. Italy's defence is very good but were exposed on a number of occasions by Spain who's variety in play would have undone Italy, had their finishing been better. England are capable of the same but again, the finishing will be the key on Sunday.

I agree with all that. And despite the things I've said, I thought GS got the selection right last night. That midfield works pretty well, I like Mount, he's the best we have got in that position I think, and Kane and Sterling have to start. Saka deserves his place too on recent showings, ahead of Sancho. We can use Foden, Grealish and Sancho to change things around, a great luxury. As we have done. Austria took Italy to extra time and almost went ahead in added time, narrow off side. And they weren't playing at home. It will be a tough game against a team that will use everything to win, but we are at home, and don't lose at Wembley very often.

Weird how opinions differ. I can't see what Mount brings to the team at all, and I can't believe we don't have a better defensive midfielder than Rice. Foden I see as an impact player (and a good one), and I like Saka, he's an intelligent kid.

For all that we have kept all these clean sheets, I still think the jury is out on our two centre halves. They are very good at what they do, but they will find the exam they get from Italy's front three a real toughie.

Who would you play instead of Mount.

Over the course of last season, Mount got better whereas prior I was still unsure about him. In the system we play where it's really all about our wide players he's not done as much as I thought. He's good but personally, I'd still prefer Grealish in there instead of him. Think he has that extra touch of magic that Mount doesn't. Won't happen though as Mount is a shoe in and I've no problem with that.

Magical night last night, what being a football fan is all about

Just 90 minutes away from an even more special night. COME ON ENGLAND

It’s just obligatory now, they have to have women on. Positive discrimination etc.
The woke BBC don't for England games.

Unless one of Lineker, Shearer, Ferdinand, Jenas, Lampard and Klinsmann or that generic commentator fella is a very convincing sex change.

My money is on Jenas fwiw.

Women surely don’t have a place in top men’s football, my wife fell asleep during extra time 😂😂😂😂 backing up my theory 😬

I'm in the minority and too have struggled to work out his selection. He won't create anything as he has no flair and seems to play the ball simple all the time. What he doesn't give you is 7/10 in any position - I believe he could probably play deeper too. Going into the tournament, I'd have probably played maybe Grealish there. Reminds me of David Platt without the goals ;)

Re Kane's penalty, he and Schmeichel were at Leicester together in 2013. Keepers will know the tells from training together.
I remember Harry Kane playing for Leicester at Bloomfield Rd. I don't think scored but he did stand out. Similarly, a very young Rio Ferdinand playing on-loan for Bournemouth as well, he ran virtually the full length of the pitch with the ball looking to score.
