Well we finally did it, we didn't bottle the semi final. This team and manager are made of sterner stuff, because I thought for a semi final against a highly determined side full of belief, we were fantastic. We played with intelligence, patience and managed to get behind a defence that sat back quite a lot during the game. From the moment Sterling missed that first chance, we were great.
I don't know why anyone would think Denmark would be an easy game - any side that reaches that stage has to be a good side, and you're never going to ease past anyone at that stage. But we showed brilliant character to come back from the setback of going a goal down, and we didn't buckle under the pressure and expectation of 60,000 fans.
Three further points. Firstly, I'm really surprised at some of the criticism for some of Southgate's decisions. I thought he got it spot on, and he took off Grealish to get the job done because he knew we didn't need to go for a third. Fans love to see the team go for the kill, but I think you need to be pragmatic in huge games like that, and often it will pay dividends like tonight. In taking Grealish off we were able to close the match down with relative ease, and at one point towards the end our ball retention for a good few minutes was superb.
England have won 11 tournament knockout games since 1966, and Gareth Southgate has led us to 5 of those. Not bad! I thought he was being too negative in the group stages, but we have really grown in to this tournament and we're actually getting better. I don't think we've hit top gear yet either, and we'll probably need to to win on Sunday.
Secondly - Raheem Sterling. Absolutely brilliant tonight. It'll be interesting to see how the Italians try to defend against him, because when in the mood he's pretty much unplayable.
Thirdly - It was never a pen. But we thoroughly deserved to win, and I can't say i'm even slightly bothered we made it via a lucky decision when we have barely had any luck for 40 years in major tournaments. Do you think Germany cared Lampard's goal wasn't given? Or Argentina cared the hand of god counted? All teams that make the latter stages of tournaments tend to get a bit of fortune along the way.
So another 90 minutes of major stress awaits, and I can't wait! Come on England!!!
