Can anybody recommend a good power company that is legit and will accept payment by cheque. I live overseas and my parents are elderly and cannot do direct debit. Apparently Shell have taken over the company they were with. They want to change to somebody who still accepts payment the old fashioned way.. home phone, mobile etc. All as one ?? Any help appreciated

They’ve also changed my 87 year old mothers to shell energy who can’t be contacted by phone. They’re telling her she has to pay 3 months in advance. They can bog right off. I’m ringing bt for her in the morning and see what they’re charges are She only has a landline so hopefully get a decent price with another company

Can you not open a basic bank account for them and manage it. They can pay their cheque in and then benefit from cheaper DD prices.

Shell have been awful in my experience. Wanted to put our direct debit up 200% at the time we were transferred to them after our previous supplier went bust. We were actually in credit at the time as well.

I'm in New Zealand..don't think the cheque would work.. would be happy to just pay it myself without any payment, but they won't agree to that.

I was on about overseeing the opening of a UK account and monitoring from oversees. Sure you have it covered. 👍

A lot of banks have stopped issuing Cheque books so you could have problems further down the road and unless your on pay meter can't think of a power company that doesn't accept new customers and not do DD.

No they sent a bill through from June wanting payment for June July and august
I can’t fathom out how they can do this when they do t know what her call charges are going to be. Sounds iffy to me

Could you not accept a chq from your parents and then set up a direct debit payment from your account to the company
I’d also be changing supplier
I’m gunna change my mother in laws this morning.

My 94 year old mother is with Bulb who are in administration. Her £85 DD has increased to £170, then £200 and now £230.
Any recommendations to switch or are they all the same and driven by out of control price increases?

They must have a bank account if they have a cheque book. I thought they were not valid anymore

Get the manager details of their bank, email the manager tell him the story and set up a phone call to him.

I’m sure he can advise you to set up their account online so you can make payments more easily. It’s time to get power of attorney over their affairs or it will turn to sh!t soon.

I've been transferred to Shell after goto energy went bust.
I'm trying to get a refund for £1000.00 after they estimated 2x bills even though I sent the readings in as requested.
We haven't used any gas since we have been with them, but it didn't stop them estimating we had used over £700.00 worth?
I have heard Octopus energy are ok?

Octopus are OK 👍

The should have never deregulated the domestic energy market, the whole thing is an absolute clusterfuck.... A single Public National Supplier should have been maintained for Gas & Electric.... It's hard enough for those of us who actually work within the industry to resolve some of the issues with over-payment, dodgy meter readings, supplier changes and what have you, never mind pensioners....👎

I was transferred to Octopus a few months ago. Relatively easy to speak to, seemingly efficient, easy website, and I'd go with them again.

We’re with Octopus. They’re not bad to be honest…. One of the better ones and fairly reasonable price wise.
Utilities Warehouse are pretty good too
