Jake Daniels - every credit

I've worked with many gays over the years & never given it a second thought. Unfortunately with sport, especially the tribalism that encompasses football, Jake could still get plenty of chanting grief. Until he's transferred to their club, scores his first goal & becomes a hero.
Don't we all love the shallow hypocrisy of being a football fan. I'm one, no one was more tainted that Tony Ellis until he scored his first BFC goal.
Oi Mike, tudo bem?

I wonder if this has nailed Jake's future next season at Bloomfield Road rather than be sent out on loan? Am sure the club will want to look after the lad mentally and physically but should a 17 year old be thrown in to a Championship game where he could fail and be judged way too early in his career just to protect him?

Interesting question this and a proper sliding doors moment for the lad. If he hadn't come out would he have been treated differently next season in terms of his football development that if he'd not? If he was at Bamber Bridge last season then maybe he would have been loaned to a Conference side this season but now is that likely?

This is well worth a listen - especially the fact that this had been 4 months in the planning which is further credit to the football club.

Decent listen 👍 Interesting what reaction ‘the second player will get’ and actually how much interest/attention that will take away from Jake. Whilst he must be enjoying everyone from the PM to some of the biggest names in football talking about him, at the end of the day he wants to be known as a footballer and so the sooner this dies down, the better as he’s at a stage in his career where he won’t want too many distractions.

I completely agree.

He’s come out gay, if we want to normalise this and ensure players are comfortable in doing so it should be left at that. He’s come out gay, okay, it’s normal, carry on with your career.

Is this a 2nd player from Blackpool, or somewhere else?

Catching the eye of the England Manager!!

Gareth Southgate has hailed Jake Daniels' "bravery" after the Blackpool striker became the UK's first active male professional footballer to come out publicly as gay.
Daniels revealed the news in an exclusive interview with Sky Sportslast week, saying: "I feel like I am ready to tell people my story."

The 17-year-old has received support from across the football world, with Jurgen Klopp saying he was "proud" of him, and Price William, the president of the Football Association, praising his "courage".

After announcing his squad for next month's Nations League matches, England boss Southgate was asked if more players will feel comfortable coming out after Daniels did so, and said: "That has to be the hope.
"Jake has incredible support from within the game and everybody is admiring the bravery of someone so young taking that step.

"It's sad we're talking that way. Frankly, across any other walk of life, the sexuality of someone wouldn't be questioned or even a discussion. That's the bridge we all know has needed to be crossed and he has opened that possibility for everybody else now.

"It's brilliant he's done that. I hope others feel the confidence and support that they feel they can do it. It's to be proved whether there is more tolerance from the terraces, from everywhere within the game.

Two Scottish referees have now come out following Jake's news. Great that he is such an inspiration. Really hope another English footballer (should of course there be one) comes out before the start of the season.

I agree, whilst what Jake has done is incredibly brave, fantastic and will ultimately change football forever the next few months/years will define Jake’s career . If he knuckles and focuses on his football he has a fantastic chance of making a success of his career - hopefully with us for years to come. He has to guard against his career being derailed or sidelined and ultimately only being known as the first openly gay footballer whose career faded away or never really took off.

Having just read Beyly Lubala's Twitter page to see if there is any movement, I wonder how his #GlorytoGod stance stands with Jake's news?

Where do you see a connection?
As others have also pointed out, what does saying Glory to God have to do with anyone's sexuality?

There are gay vicars, there are gay Christians. Fail to see your point, unless you have seen something anti-gay from him?

Don't know what that's got to do with it, the posters worried knew that at the time.
Surely if he's in the first team and banging them in, he would be more in the limelight?

As it is he's just a youth team player who's more famous for being gay than for any footballing success

You were worried about the media circus that would happen as 'he's just getting started', not in a few years if he ever gets to that point. Such a media circus this summer hasn't happened, so I would think that would be something you're glad about.

Of course I'm glad about it, what's your point?

I think any excuse to have a pop at Jake is more likely the reality foggy. Lot's of men still really struggle with homosexuality for whatever reason.

It did happen when he first came out, the facts that he is miles away from the first team has probably slowed things down a little
It lasted for about 48 hours and proved to be neither a circus or a distraction and was just a nice wave of support and encouragement that passed as we moved on and forgot, and it's what I expected considering we all knew he was a youth team player when it happened and these concerns were being posted.

Let's hope it doesn't effect the young man's progress in football

I thought it might gain more publicity than it did to be fair.

We still have rainbows round our badge on Social media though so it’s not moved on just yet…

Surely it would be great for him if it did effect progress?
I'm sure he means hopefully not in a negative way. He seems happy and comfortable here and hopefully the dressing room is as supportive as it sounded like it was so it so far doesn't appear like it will be an issue, but I'm not naive enough to be sure of that going forward. I'm proud of how the club handled it but homophobic chanting should be banned, that's where the club needs to set a strong example. If they have the pride logo on their social media but do nothing while that chant continues they are no better than any other company wanting the positive praise of seeming to be inclusive while not doing much to actually create a safe, inclusive environment.

I'm pretty sure Jake is getting all the advice he needs from lots of well qualified people and his family
If and when that dries up I'm sure he'll be straight on here for advice.
Don't forget Jake is still only 17 and whilst he's shown enough promise to be awarded a pro-contract he's obviously not ready for the first team yet.

How can you ban chanting?

I suspect he means affect, rather than effect 😂

And yes, it would be great if the homophobic chanting would stop. Personally, I’d prefer it that our fans were big enough to recognise that change was needed, rather than the club having to intervene and police the chants.👍

How can you ban chanting?
Through existing laws? It's been illegal to chant racist or homophobic songs for decades now, although obviously not always policed. And any club has the right to issue warnings and eventually bans for chants they deem offensive.

How can you ban chanting?
Of course you can't ban chanting. It's Jake's job to become a great footballer and at least stop his own fans from homophobic chanting through their appreciation of his footballing skills. Not very well explained but hopefully you get my drift.

It's a nice thought and I would imagine there's a few people who thought you know what let's leave the chant behind, it's no big deal. But with things like this 'policing' is what gets the results. It was the efforts of introducing Kick it Out and UK laws in the 90s that stopped racist chanting primarily.

I’m not convinced about that to be honest…. That’s certainly not my experience having lived through the 80’s / 90’s.

More a case that attitudes across society have changed as well as generational changes have resulted in these things dying out.

Before my time so I could be wrong, I would prefer it your way as that seems nicer. I'm sure this has been studied and reported for answers.

I’m sure the Football Authorities would like to refer to the overwhelming success of their Kick it Out campaign (and they’ve likely paid handsomely for the studies to prove it😂), but it certainly wasn’t a prominent driving force in my football supporting experience… life generally just moved on from that kind of thing across society as a whole👍

In all honesty, it was never really that racist during the 90’s at Blackpool in any case. There were a couple of chants, which were pretty rare, that crossed the line…. and still persisted until recently really. I’ve certainly never experienced any racial abuse directed at players ever, though I’m sure it may have gone on.

Am genuinely surprised with the new season a couple of days away that no other footballer followed Jake in coming out. In many ways, I think the press thought Jake would be more of a first team starter than remaining an academy player (albeit a professional one) and so in many ways, there will probably still be a bit of a media circus if a player who is actually playing for his team week in, week out now decides to come out as well.

Putting to one side the fact that it was irrelevant I couldn't understand why he did it, part of me thinks he thought it might help his career. Tin hat on. 😬

He wouldn't be the first 17yo to become a star.
