Lancaster University Concerts - Fantastic Book

Enjoyed reading this thread. There have clearly been some wonderful acts on over the years, brilliant music. Only went once and saw Camel in the 1970s whom were really good in the day. It was a very decent little venue. Reading the bands people have been to see i think i should have made more of an effort to see some of them there.

The last band I saw there was the Lancashire Hotpots.

Before that it was the Selecter, Specials, Madness tour 30 years previously.

I blagged me and four others into the 1st Slade gig I went to there.
One of the roadies let us in as I missed out on the tickets when there were released.
I showed him my Slade tattoos to prove I hadn't just jumped on the bandwagon after the had taken Reading by storm.

Just for you 😍

I tried to upload my photo, but it won’t work. I’m on I Pad, anyone know what I need to do. I’ve tried in the past with the old stadium photo thread but had the same issue. Seems to be the wrong format.

Went to loads, all great, think the last one was either Slade or The Alarm. The Ramones & The Boys gig was great. In the Golden Ball PLF having a pint, then on the bus to Lancaster with Dolly (RIP) & bus back after.

On my pc, I just copy and paste now having previously had problems and works nearly every time.

Stranglers did two gigs up there I think, Raven album and also Men in Black - another couple not mentioned yet were Bow Wow Wow and Bunnymen, both fantastic and Kid Creole

Blimey, too many to remember: Boomtown Rats / Buzzcocks / Stiff Little Fingers (twice) / The Clash / Jam / The Ramones / Siouxsie / Third World / Steel Pulse (twice) / Selector, Madness and Specials / The Beat / Blondie / Stranglers / Skids (supporting someone I think) / Tina Turner / A few others. Plenty of battles between Barrow and Blackpool. Blackpool always out numbered Barrow heavily. Was within feet of the Barrow lad who got scalped at SLF at the end of the gig.

Yeah, I know I've probably said this before but I remember my first gig at Lancaster Uni was to see 10cc in about 73. Always remember the tickets said 'the Great Hall' and when I entered I couldn't believe how small it actually was.
It was no Winter Gardens, Tower Ballroom or Opera House. We're spoilt in that sense.

If you screenshot it, that significantly reduces the file size and allows an upload.

Had a ticket to see Tina Turner at the Uni didn’t go needed to drive the Transit Van from Morecambe to Chesterfield around 18 of us. I was the only one old enough to hire a van at the time 😂😂 Friends that went to gig missed most of the concert due to being in the bar!!!! Thinking back some 40 years should of gone to the gig.😀😀🍊🍊

Surprised nobody has mentioned the two tone tour: The Specials, Madness and The Selector. All for £1. Ramones £2.50.

Looks like that Stranglers gig is the new Barnet away! 🤣🤣

I was at Leeds 81-84 some fine nights there in the Refec building. Cramps, the Clash, Stray Cats, Steel Pulse, Gregory Isaacs, The Bunnymen, Rory Gallagher, Grandmaster Flash, the list goes on.... 👍
I remember being amazed at how many Pool fans I recognised at that gig. It seemed like the Fylde had migrated for the evening.

Remember something about those from Barrow, but I wasn't involved.

Got a signed first run of the book a couple of years ago and its a fantastic read.
Saw some fantastic gigs there, wish I had kept the bootleg teeshirts that used to be outside the hall.
The Jam twice, the Rats were brilliant live, Blondie, Hazel OConnor, Undertones, Stranglers. Some great supporting acts too, Vapours, Vipers, Duran Duran but for sheer showmanship Gary Glitter was THE gig. Motorbike on stage etc.
If only we'd known then what we know now.

Also saw the Fall at New Planet City in Lancaster and the Buzzcocks at Hornby Institute.

Yeah, great venue for rock in the 70s. Saw EC, Bad Company and Rockpile (Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe). Can’t remember whether they were top of the bill or warm up band.

I work at Lancaster Uni and each day walk past a wall with huge photos celebrating the bands that played there.
I was at most of them; that makes me feel old. I don't tell my students though 😉

A member of Steel Pulse stole my brother's track suite when they shared a flat. My brother knew as he went to see them live and the bastard was wearing it !!!!

For those of a certain age and who liked live music, a trip to Lancaster Uni in the 70's and 80's was a regular feature.

A new book has been re-published - When Rock Went To College

Its a 384 page softback book with loads of concert reviews, posters, flyers and lots of other interesting stuff.

Mine arrived today, looking forward to reminiscing.

Its £30 and postage took about 2 weeks. Link below

WHEN ROCK WENT TO COLLEGE
There is another by Barry Lucas from a few years ago. really is a nostalgic read.
Brilliant time .... as far as I can remember.

Some great memories of Lancy Uni gigs, Bad Company, Clapton, bonkers barmy John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett, Buzzcocks,Stiffs tour,Two Tone tour, Steele Pulse, and loads more, but The Jam were amazing, how just 3 guys could deliver such energy and sound was unbelievable,we were sweating our cojones off! as Bottle mentioned re deafening,my ears were ringing for days after that gig! Great times!
Never heard of Hendrix ?

Stranglers, Souxsie, Human League, Dead Kennedys, PIL, Bunnymen, SLF, The Alarm so many I can’t remember them all but I’d say it was my favourite venue in the North West.

Honourable mention to the poor bloke who sang for UK Decay supporting the Dead Kennedys, he wore a purple mohair jumper which showed off perfectly the greenies that he got absolutely bombarded with🤮

Also after the Bunnymen we went to club in Morecambe and I was made to take my docs off to gain entry, borrowed a mates shoes to go the bog and kept hold of them for a while😂😂, it kicked off with Barrow in there that night as well.

Only saw a handful early eighties, had to wag school to get the bus up. The Jam setting sons tour was by far the best for me. Still had loads of concert t shirts and posters from back then, moved house and went to get them from my Mothers, only to be told "Ive thrown them out" devastated I was.
I was at the Jam's Setting Sons gig. Got backstage afterwards & still have my Harrington Jacket signed by Weller, Foxton & Buckler.

Best gig I saw at Lancaster Uni was Graham Parker & the Rumour circa 1978 or 79
Quality night including some decent action in the car park with a van full of Nobbers.

The Jam and the First Stiff Tour -Elvis Costello, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Nick Lowe and Wreckless Eric both in 1977

Graham Parker & The Rumour were ** brilliant live, saw them a few times down here in London at that time, the best being a double header at the Rainbow with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Dukes, one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Seen Southside more than anybody probably, outstanding live.

When I moved back to Blackpool in 1981 I went loads between then and 1986 when I returned down South again. It wasn't my favourite decade for music, to put it mildly but saw some odd gigs there such as Kid Creole & The Coconuts, Haircut 100, John Martyn, U2 and several others.

I lived next door to Jerry Lovell who was a Geography teacher at Collegiate and he was lead singer in Blackpool band Sensible Shoes so I used to go to loads of their gigs around Lancashire and Cumbria, anyone remember them?

I also saw the weirdest gig at the Blackpool Magic Club (WTF!!) John Ottway & Wild Willy Barrett, who were another of my favourite live bands, I had never heard of the place and never went there again. they were absolutely brilliant but the stage was tiny and when he did his forward roll playing his guitar he had to start his run up off stage on the left and disappeared off the stage to the right to complte it, it was bizarre.
