London the new Covid hotspot

Also now providing testing for all secondary school children in the worst affected boroughs to avoid going into Tier 3.

khan is a horrible man, as for London, while millions of people head into the city centre to do their Christmas shopping etc they are always going to spread viruses, cold, flu etc.

According to figures out today
Should have been placed in Tier 3 in the first place but kept out ‘ for economic reasons ‘
Quite how the Govt justify the Xmas relaxation with the capital having these rates is going to be interesting
I bet London was never out of tier three.....

It’s just the same in Spain. Madrid has all the benefits whilst they squeeze the Catalans for every cent they’ve got to fund the largesse.

They wont justify it, it will be tier 2. Stuff the North.

Except the city centre is as quiet as it's ever been.

This is very true indeed they started the Great Plague down there simply by not washing their hands after going to the toilet, and if you've been to the Hole in the Wall pub in Waterloo then you'll understand why.

Very selfish people down there who have little in the way of community spirit, any sort of personal ethics or standards, and who are often simply caricatures like the Bishop of Bath and Wells in Blackadder.

I have been to that pub, it’s disgusting !!

Dat London will launch the third wave. We all know it. 12 million reasons to be tier 3 and wait for better times but our glorious leaders bottled it.

Its a tricky one,
Probably not a popular view but London is pretty much the finance capital of Europe so its probably more important to keep it open than say Hull.
Personally i think the whole Country should be in tier 3 but im not making the decision & trying to juggle the safety v economic impact.
I actually think there is a good chance London will be placed in tier 3 next week.

The only way to seriously limit infections in winter is probably lockdown or tier 3 at best & close all unis & colleges imho.

As soon as you open up especially now in the run up to xmas unfortunately it will likely spread big time.

Can’t understand how they’re justifying any easing of the restrictions anywhere. The virus is absolutely rampant across the country. 150 cases per 100,000 is not a ‘small number’

Where I am the rate is a tenth of that. Schools, libraries, restaurants, gyms, cinemas all closed, everyone wearing masks. ‘Cause we want to beat it!

Vaccine won’t help the tens of thousands who will die because ‘it’s Christmas’

I'm mildly surprised that it hasn't been any worse here. Even now, it is mainly a problem of the outer East and outer West of the city and the East End. Where most people live most closely to each other, in fact.

But large parts of the city are around the national average and some are a good bit better. I can't speak for anywhere else, but people HAVE significantly changed their behaviour here. We are not going out as much, hardly anyone is commuting, the Tube is pretty empty outside of peak hours. The trains are just pretty empty full stop.

Like it or not, it is still the epicentre of the nation's wealth and its economic engine. I don't blame them for hesitating about changing the Tier ; with all due respect, the impact of a change here is far more significant economically than what you do in a Northern seaside resort, in the middle of winter. There is a balance to be struck, and not only is it not easy, there is no single, definitive right answer.

You can talk about the economic impact in Blackpool in winter but we had to deal with the loss of the summer season

Manchester / Leeds / Sheffield / Birmingham / Newcastle / Liverpool have all had to deal with the economic impact of Tier 3 as well

London shouldn't be treated as ' a special case ' - it leaves a sour taste

It's in the East here in Lancashire too pal but we are still in tier 3. I find your comparison of that there economy in Laaaaandan to here in good old Blackpool quite insulting actually. Kiss me quick hat sales have fallen dramatically! 😃

You will want to think back to the end of November when the decisions were made, things have gotten a lot worse rather quickly in London and other areas but that wasn't evident at the time.

We also need to avoid falling into the trap of focussing on the headline infection rate only, we know that there are 5 different metrics that the government uses to determine the tiers, patients in hospital being one of the most significant ones.

The trend in London was clear to all
Recall Hancock saying they were going to have a job on their hands to keep London out of Tier 3 on the first review which begs the question why it didn't go in when it should have done

Hospital patient numbers, compare NW with London and then tell me you can't see the difference.

Correct. You've only got to see the arrogant reaction from people who live in that verminous swamp to understand why their numbers are up. Very much the 'I'm alright Jack' attitude that's made them the economic epicentre of the UK,where wealth and resources are effectively thieved from the rest of the nation.

Its just a town full of Fagins.

TAM is correct regarding the Northern Cities. Seems clear that the decision re London was on economic grounds rather than medical grounds . As I stated somewhere else , you will see Andy Burnham on TV a lot in the next ten days if Manchester not moved from Tier 3.

This is the major issue though & without mass testing across the board there will always be more virus about than the estimated figures as those with minor or no symptoms will likely not be tested. I know of people even if showing symptoms who would not want to be tested & know if they have it.

As said some countries clampdown if recorded cases are estimated at 50 per 100k or even less.

Come on Lost
You know full well the hospital rates lag behind the contraction rates

Which gives you some head room to see which way things go.

You also know that the age profile of cases is more important than the headline rate, London seems to be driven by an outbreak in secondary school pupils, who don't generally tend to frequent pubs and bars, and who don't tend to end up in hospital with the virus.

Ah the pontificating civil servant has thrown his three pennyworth in , its not a case of being an epicentre of wealth and ‘the’ financial engine ! I’m quite sure that if certain areas outside London would have received similar investment , then they would all be ‘epicentres’ of whatever the money had been invested in . Never mind whether it’s west /east London , it’s a sort journey on the tube into other boroughs ,most certainly appears that you think that as long as that there London functions , you don’t give hoot for all the businesses outside London and people’s livelihoods !! Just typical

And that wasn't the case in Manchester albeit with university students ?

He's not a civil servant. Hasn't been for a while.
