Lyons off

Where's this news come from TM?
If it's accurate, I would imagine that MA will be very unhappy. Are we expecting players to be given to us, when we have the Critchley money in the bank?
Update: Thanks Ste for the twitter link ... this isn't good news, I hope we have a couple of backup names

When Appleton came in I was sure the board would get some signings in to get fans on side. For whatever reason they’ve struggled and it’s likely that we’ll start the season with more or less the same squad as last season with a less popular manager.

Shame.

Due to injury problems at Rovers.
SeasideHoop (?) posted that by Irish standards they're a well-off club, so in these new circumstances they're keeping hold for now.

"The Seasiders are understood to have offered £250k plus add-ons for the full back with hopes that a deal could be wrapped up this week ahead of the Championship season but Rovers' tight options at the back, following another injury to a Rovers defender this weekend, have seen that deal taken off the table.

Rovers centre half Pico Lopes ruptured his achilles in the draw against Drogheda on Saturday and Rovers are already tight on defensive options with Sean Gannon having to play out of position at times to aid their defensive efforts. Lopes is expected to be out for a number of months and for now that has seen the deal for Lyons to head to Bloomfield Road shelved."

Looks like the answer to that is yes !
We want 6 million for Gabriel and Bowler and are arseing about over 100,000 to sign a player.
Learnt absolutely nothing from last seasons start, once is a mistake twice it's obviously the way we work.

Very very disappointing, definitely think it is fair to put the blame on Mansford for this.

We come in with an offer of 100k two weeks ago, negotiations seemingly took place (Shamrock Rovers surely would have told us their price at that point), we come back with 200k last week and it's rejected. We re-enter negotiations closer to the weekend, probably looking to seal the deal, but then on Saturday they get an injury to a player and now it's completely off.

Can't help but feel that this wouldn't have happened if two weeks ago (when Shamrock Rovers would have told us what their price) we had just met their going price.

I am all for making sure that the players who are brought in, are brought in for the right amount and are the right signing to make, but can't help but feel that not offering a larger sum up front earlier on would have seen us avoid this.

And sometimes the going rate that some clubs put up for players is way too high and negotiations are necessary, but with all due respect, Shamrock Rovers is a LOI club, they wouldn't have wanted more than 400k-500k for the player and haggling over a couple thousand pounds, especially for a player the club really wanted, just seems completely misguided.

It's quite obvious we wanted him and he was high on our list of potential signings. We play hardball to get full whack for outgoings and want to pay peanuts for incomings......starting to feel a bit deja vu

Disappointing news, but not surprising I suppose, particularly with their injuries.
Looks like Garbutt at LB and perhaps Moore at RB (love Connolly but not at RB) v Reading
I hope it's more than "likely now look elsewhere" for FB reinforcement. Very worrying.

We should be trying to avoid playing square pegs in round holes like we did last season at the start.

Was watching the game with Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles today, they both reckoned we need a RB and LB!!

I bet Lyons is delighted having agreed personal terms.

It doesn't sound right to me unless Lyons isn't really that bothered. You can't really keep a player at a club if he wants to move on.

He is contracted up to Nov 30th, 2023.

Maybe if he has a release clause, it could still happen, but the club probably wouldn't pay it anyways.

this is turning into old pool again with major disappointments happing
we had our honeymoon, went up via Wembley, stay up , beat them lot , but now snake has been poached ,get a coach , let’s be honest majority of us never wanted players rumours to be leaving and we can’t sign anyone as fees are looking to high , this is second deal now collapsed in a week

it makes fans like me very nervous, especially as we can all see this team needs major strengthing
not looking good at moment is it 😔 🧡

Big chance for Jack Moore, I do not remember him doing anything wrong in any of the matches he has played. Agree with other posters love Connolly but not at RB.
As one door closes another one opens, everyone is raving about how upset they are that Lyons is not joining us yet, but I have seen Jack Moore play and I rate him, no disrespect to Lyons but I have not seen him play.
Might need to go 3 at the back to give full backs the extra support.

Oh come on. We're talking about funding a Championship standard player - supposedly. It's a negligible amount.
An Irish League full back is definitely Championship standard? I don't know and I suspect none of us do either.

Reality Check:
What standard is the Irish League ? I don’t know, but would suppose that is L2/ National League. Would we seriously pay more than £250k for a player from that standard. I think that Ben Mansfield is correct to pull out.

The player either is or isn't someone we want though. Surely? It's obvious that RB is the single biggest priority as we currently don't have one. We're playing probably the best option to play in CDM (arguably the most crucial position on the pitch if we want to play 433 type football) to plug a gap elsewhere.

So - if we aren't sure Lyons is good enough, why have bothered at all - we clearly need a player who can play now. The league he plays in is irrelevant in terms of the value he has to us. If we think he's only '200k good' - then why are we chasing him?

And Jamie vardy wasn’t good enough for us and was to expensive when he was at fleetwood then he went to Leicester and won the prem and played in the champions league and won a golden boot.

Totally agree.

Just like we didn’t want to pay what Brannagan was worth & wasted two windows trying to get him.

It will be a critical week if we want to start the season well.
We're going to need all the points we can get.

It's all been a bit of a shambles so far this window.

In reality we were told we had a bigger budget than last year and we've got 2 loan signings 6 days before the season starts.

As much as I didn't want Appleton I actually feel sorry for him. Got to be hard not having even the basics of a starting 11, 6 days before the start of the season.

Probably get called negative for this but its the truth right now.

He’s got a starting 11 plus a full bench …. Or do we just write off the squad from last season then ??????

I am cured of this shit.

We have gone from a post Oystains club that conducts its business with dignity and behind closed doors, to a shithouse club that makes offers, agrees terms and then pulls out of the deal at the last minute in the full glare of social media.

Not sure who is to blame but we are becoming a joke club again.

As Karren Brady once said to Karl : "people with no money shouldn't go shopping".
