Manager Shortlist

Lots of rumours doing the rounds than we've agreed a £500K compensation deal with Stockport for Challinor. Probably and hopefully bollocks as I don't feel he is the right fit or pedigree for us.

His actual words were 'The club won't be splashing out big transfer fees whilst there are these investments to make' (training ground etc).
Also 're the team, 'We need to keep improving year on year on the pitch, as we have done to date. We need to maintain our position in the Championship (then push on if the opportunity arises_ this last bit paraphrased)
This hardly screams, 'theres nowt left for any new players'. Think we need to keep things in perspective.
This comment from SS has been taken totally out of context for me, my take is 1. We won’t be paying 2m or 3m for a player while we still have the training ground and stand to build. 2. There will be some money (aside from anything that comes in from sales and not the Critchley compo) for new players probably in the half a million bracket for maybe 2 or 3 players at most. Sadler knows we have to stay in the championship and by all account John Stephenson - head of football operations - is a master at finding players to buy cheap or on a free who can be developed. The squad has to be improved - Sadler knows that and it will happen in one form or another I have no doubt, another fresh set of eyes in the form of a new coach looking at what we have and what we need might in the long run not be a bad thing.

Would not be a bad shout for me, did a cracking job at Stockport albeit they basically bought their way to the title, did a great job at Hartlepool with little money, is ambitious, highly regarded and plays good football. What I don’t know - as I don’t know enough about him - is the youth development side, does he bring youngsters through and develop them?

Evatt still favourite.
Challinor joint 3rd favourite with Robinson.

For some weird reason, Grayson is still 2nd favourite.
I don’t see Evo wanting to come, he is heavily invested in Bolton and the ‘project’ there, we passed him over last time - didn’t respond to his application apparently - and I am not sure he will forget that. Bolton have a good chance of going up this year and granted do play really good football, the lad Adofolian - think that’s how you spell it - looks to be a real talent Evo is developing.

Tam Courts is a name that hasn't been mentioned a lot that I think would be in the same tier as Warburton or Manning (i.e. He'd be absolutely class).

He's taken Dundee United from relegation fodder in the SPL to Europe in one season, seeing massive improvements in the squad while being hailed for integrating the youth.

Very young, but has been managing for a while now (albeit in leagues that are less overall quality than the Championship).

I see Michael Jackson being touted for the job.
I wonder why? He wasn’t successful in his managerial career and took a job as a coach. You can’t hire someone just because they played for you and were in a successful team.

In contrast Michael Duff also has experience of coaching at Burnley (under 18 and under 23) but has made a great success of his first managerial job at Cheltenham.

He also knows league 1 and league 2, which is where we look to pick up future players from.
His win record is bad just looked it up, surprised at that

Wasn’t Critchley heavily invested in our project 🤔?

I think he has all the credentials that we are looking for to be honest. May stick a little wager on this myself.

Would be quite happy if he were appointed.

Was he??? After recent events clearly he was not!! Lol 😂 Whereas Evo I feel genuinely is invested at Bolton and will be difficult to prise away. I also think the club will stear well clear from the ‘old boys’ route. I think we will go after Liam Manning at MK Dons

Don't think we'll get Evo, the circumstances that were present the last time he interviewed for the job are not present now.

He would have been coming from the National League to League 1 (a massive step up) whereas now he'd be coming from League 1 to the Championship (not *that* big of a step up considering that Bolton will be favorites for Promotion).

Don't think we'll be favourites, but do think Evatt will want to finish his project, and go for playoffs

Has Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank been mentioned? Saw his name on the Gazette list.
He comes across as very erudite and spoke well of us as a play off pundit

For me I would tier the list of potential managers like this-

S (the best possible appointment we could hope for)- Mark Warburton
A (fantastic appointment that would show a great deal of ambition)- Liam Manning, Ian Evatt, Tam Courts
B (a decent appointment that has a few drawbacks, but could be good)- Karl Robinson, Michael Duff, Tony Mowbray, Joey Barton
C (would be disappointed if we hired, but could see it turning out O.K.)- Dave Challinor, Michael Carrick, Michael Appleton
F (awful, terrible, no chance the appointment would work out)- Mike Garrity, Phil, Sol Campbell

Not a bad list. I’d probably move Duff and Carrick up a tier, and Barton would be on the F-level.

I’m not one for going for someone due to the love the fans have for them, like some are suggesting above. However for what we are trying to do in regards to the type of football and players we are signing, Evatt sticks out for me more now than he did last time.

Has the league experience he lacked previously, done well with Barrow and Bolton now. Plays the football Simon wanted when he took over, that we are yet to see. The more I think about it the more he’s the man for the job.

I’ve never been convinced by Garrity to be honest, and I have always had the feeling it was a job for a friend on Critch’s part. Get him gone along with this new fella that has come in.

Thommo would be ideal now for assistant with Evatt. This is not based on our history but what we require for now.
Plus they wouldn’t leave us at the drop of a hat .

You’d like to think not but if he comes in and does well, there will always be a bigger club after him. The main constant however would be Thommo.

I seem to remember Simon Sadler saying he wants a footballing team in place and a style of football so that if the manager does change, the upheaval would be less of an impact as long as the new manager was of the same mindset. Adding Thommo to the staff as assistant is in line with that and would create that stability regardless of what happens with the manager.

I think Evo and Thommo would be a great set up and would really excite me for the season ahead.

See that Duncan Ferguson odd have been cut today. Wouldn't mind him, doesn't take shit, always seems to have a good relationship with the players and gives us an in with Everton. I'd prefer someone more experienced if I'm honest, but I wouldn't be angry with Big Dunc.

Warburton had an alleged falling out with some of the football management at his first job, at the time John Stephenson was head of football operations. So not sure if they get on well together. Warburton's record at QPR isn't great and is independently wealthy from being a trader of 20years where he was responsible for dealing 11/2 - 2 billion in trades per day. I just cannot see him coming to Blackpool.

Was just reading how Les Ferdinand said QPR appointed their manager this time. Says based on detailed studies of managers using data , their recruitment criteria etc. Had list of 25 and interviewed 8. Doubtful whether we will have the luxury of doing it that way.
Why do you think we won't do it that way? I'm pretty sure the club will use data analysis.

Saying pretty much what we already knew, we'll go for someone young and who integrates young players.

Good to hear actual names though, feel we will start to hear much more this week as I think the club will try to bring someone in before the transfer window opens.

Duff wouldn't be a bad hire, but we could definitely do better.

His accomplishments with a small budget at Cheltenham have been very impressive and I'd like to see what he can do with better players and a bigger budget, but he isn't exactly the attacking football genius that Evatt or Manning would be.

In Cheltenham's title winning season in 2020-2021 they scored only 61 goals conceding 39.

Yeah Duff plays with a back 5, well we certainly have enough CH for that.

Dean Holden sits on top of a coach in protest against the O's and now he's up for the managers job?...With Grimshaw in nets aswell its just a matter of time before we pick up a centre forward named raggazino and a defender called Afroman.
