Missed opportunity

I’ve just listened to the crowd at The Oval singing ‘God Save the King’ and the pure emotion that followed it. I understand the rationale that it’s a mark of respect to call football off at all levels, but it’s also an opportunity missed for football fans around the country to be able to release the emotion of the last couple of days.

A lot of people will have spent Friday watching it on TV, absorbing it and letting it all sink in.
Today should have been a day for us to come together and pay our respects with friends and family. Yes we could all go to church today but not many will do that. It would have been “our” way to pay our respects. And I feel that has been took away. And if that wasn’t enough they’ve decided kids can’t play their first game of the season at grassroots level either.

I think it's an awful decision for the reasons given above.
I also think it says everything of the way football fans are thought of by The FA, EPL and EFL. Not just the minority of idiots who go to football but all of the fans as one. It sounds a bit OTT to say this but quite honestly for me the FA, EPL and the EFL (already) can get to fcuk from now on. They don't represent football communities or football and I won't give any of them the time of day.
FCUK THE EFL
FCUK THE EPL
FCUK THE FA.

The best way for people to mourn is together, surely? Don’t get me wrong, it feels like the end of an era and I’m very sad for our loss. The Queen was an inspiration and a symbol of hope for many.

But football does so, so much for our nations working people... for families and friends to bond and to understand the journey of life together... football is the backdrop to therapeutic conversation, dinner, drinks, laughter. I cannot speak for her majesty but I believe that she would have wanted us to keep calm and carry on.

And no doubt they'll cancel next Saturday's games as well even though the funeral is likely to be two days later

Reading the posts regarding having been able to pay our respects today, and having had time to sleep on it, I have had a change of heart.
On Thursday and Friday I was against games going ahead.......as a mark of respect.
Now, having begun the grieving process of the passing of an incredible lady and our monarch in my own private way I do now feel that today, as has been said before in this thread, would have been a remarkable day of emotions and we would have all come together to pay our respects with our friends and family.

As with the passing of anyone who is revered and loved, nobody really knows what to do in an instant.
Feelings of sadness, emptiness and loss take over ones emotions.
A decision was made, I'm absolutely sure, with the best of intentions at it's heart and we shall now stand by it.
It won't change so as we British do, we shall keep calm and carry on.

I blame the ECHR. Having to watch the nobbers has been classed as cruel and unusal punishment by the human rights brigade and the government used this as an excuse to find more time to negociate. It is barbaric when you think about it.

The fact that one of the reasons was the fear of the minority is very insulting to fans of the national sport.
Throw in fear of falling the wrong side of Daily Mail and Daily Express opinion aswell.
A gutless, clueless decision to postpone when a better tribute would've been to go ahead with a minutes silence and the National Anthem at every game.
Same old story in this country too many arse kissing idiots get into positions of responsibility and authority.

Keep calm and carry on allows the same old clowns to keep making the same stupid decisions, sometimes we should be a bit more like the French and call out the idiots in charge with words and actions if they are getting it wrong.

Go on then, what are you going to do about it apart from keeping calm and carrying on?
Shout a bit then do nothing!

Other sports should have followed suit. The last few days have been an opportunity to reflect and look back on the life of the Queen.

I’m not quite sure how that would be enhanced by a load of pissed uo football fans churning out “God Save The King” really.

It sounds to me like a pretty lame excuse just to carry on as normal and a lack of willingness to make a fairly limited sacrifice for someone who dedicated their life to serving her country.

The reason for the postponement was made absolutely and singularly clear… It was done as “A MARK OF RESPECT”

We’ve now got the absolute plums at the FSA seeking “compensation” for supporters who happen to have been inconvenienced by the decision (Seriously Fuck Off you embarrassing bunch of traitorous wankers) Not in my name 👎

I think the reaction from football fans tells its own story really.

For once wind your collective necks in shut the fuck up and pay your respects.

It’s not about YOU!

Well said BFC. 👍
Football and other sports were always going to be cancelled this weekend as a mark of respect it’s our Queen FFS.
We’re talking about one game for Christ's sake so get over it you moaning shower of so and so’s.

So all the other sports played yesterday and being played today are disrespectful 🙄

It's done now, but many, like me, believe it to be wrong.

To postpone something as a ‘mark of respect’ doesn’t automatically mean that going ahead with it would have been disrespectful.

The point is that football has chosen to mark her passing and show our respects, by saying that we valued your service highly enough to forego our football in your honour.

Unfortunately we’ve now got clowns like Gobby Neville leading the media charge and football fans taking to Social Media and Twitter to demonstrate their collective Knob Headedness.

And that really is disrespectful!!

Just like it was when Trevor Sinclair did the same thing.

Many fans would have liked the opportunity to pay respects as part of the football family, we won't get that now.

I'll be there Wednesday but the majority of our fanbase won't be.

We arent going to agree here. 👍

You think kicking up a big stink about it all is acceptable?

It’s a disgrace 👎

How respectful of the elite few who would have definitely driven the decision to consider that the fans choice of how to pay their respects is irrelevant and they, the good folk of the global free market dictate how the commoners should best mourn...

I for one thank FSG, UAE and all the other truly British institutions for their wisdom at this time.

Shut up legacy fans. Potential brand damage limitation is the ultimate form of respect.

😜

The left turn it into a debate about the class war, whilst the right focus on the appeasement of minorities.

I wonder if we’ll manage to squeeze a minutes silence in between somewhere.

A minutes bickering would be apt for the modern age ...

The test match had a day of cancellation on Friday so I’ve no issues the game continued Saturday same with horse racing.
Like the great north run today it’s going ahead can’t see cancelling it would have been the right decision as it’s a yearly event.
Football is played over 46 games (EFL) and over a 10 month period hence I just can’t see what all the fuss is about calling off ONE GAME.

A mark of respect is a positive, but voluntary action, not the avoidance of disrespect.
Yesterday was more a day of celebration with King Charles and most of the Royal family out on the streets shaking hands and greeting people.

The Coldstream Guards band, the Guards company with 3 cheers for King plus all the gun salutes etc

The Government also said there was no need to cancel sports and entertainment events yesterday but of course the PL and EFL know better 🙄

It’s not about “knowing better” it’s simply about making a choice. It wouldn’t be a gesture if Government had said games had to be called off… That would be compliance (not respect).

There is no ‘right or wrong’

Personally I think it’s a nice gesture from football and a real shame that has been tarnished by the usual smacked arse response.

Essentially football has said… “We realise we don’t have to cancel our program this weekend, but we’d like to make an exceptional gesture in honour of an exceptional individual”

If people don’t agree then fine… but to kick up a big stink at a time of National Mourning… nah that’s a wankers trick 👎

I’m not kicking up a fuss. I’m pointing out that after yesterday it was even more clear that there was no need to cancel “football”. A decision made by a bloke at the PL and a bloke at the EFL with no thought going into that decision.

The shops didn’t close, the train drivers and postmen have called off their strikes to go to work, cricket carried on etc etc but not football 🙄

You wearing black socks with your sandals?

I’m not talking about you personally mate… I’m on about the knob heads taking to Twitter, kicking off in the media and demanding that fans are ‘compensated’.

Unfortunately, across Great Britain we have victim rats such as Liverpool, Celtic and a minority of Swansea & Cardiff fans that would boo the national anthem and probably use it to celebrate her majesty’s passing.

It’s a shame, but her name and passing shouldn’t be tarnished by some in denial football fans with b*llsh*t agendas against her and her family.

To be fair Daz they do have a point.

Thousands of fans across the UK have spent money on tickets and travel arrangements etc to attend football matches but they had to stay at home and watch the Test Match on the tele.

The PL, FA and EFL don't give a f2ck about the fans, they never have and never will. They have not thought about fitting the matches into the schedule, new tickets etc etc and they defiantly not considered the fans at all. They still have not confirmed the midweek matches or next Saturday and Sunday games.

That’s a sweeping statement. I don’t disagree about the knobs on Social Media moaning and demanding things 24/7, I stay well away from that because it would drive me mad.
But if you’re Boro fan who’s paid for travel and accommodation, and that’s a big slice of your disposable income you’re entitled to be disappointed.
Remember although this is a period of ‘National Mourning’ not everyone is in mourning, and certainly not for 10 days. Some are actively anti Royal, some don’t have a strong opinion either way, and many are upset but also want to carry on with the things that make life worth living (like the football). That should have been a personal choice. If you’re too grief stricken to want to go to the match, nobody is forcing you to attend.
For what it’s worth I think football would have paid a fantastic tribute yesterday and today, just by all those people being together, organically. None of choreographed nonsense grieving we’re being subjected to

A decision has been made…So “I want, I want, I want” should take precedence?

The FSA and others have jumped on an opportunity to push an agenda and stir shit.

That at a time when political rivals have managed to come together and put that sort of mischief to one side.

And it’s nothing to do with being “grief stricken” just respecting what is.

As I acknowledged at the top, I’ve no truck with the ‘I want’ brigade.
But my point is that the initial decision was wrong (in my opinion), people are allowed to articulate that.
And let’s not congratulate politicians for actually behaving like grown ups for once in a lifetime. For most of them it’s just virtue signalling anyway. After the funeral they’ll be back to their childish, cheating, selfish back stabbing ways.
