OLD PICTURES OF BLACKPOOL FC

Just noticed there's no Rigby Road rugby ground. When was that built? Also that the land is being used for parking. Nothing changes.
It was opened in 1963.It basically had one stand, which was actually quite impressive but not very big.Much of the rest of the ground was cinder track with some terracing.
I used to watch the Borough at the old greyhound stadium as we lived on Belvere Avenue at the time.Followed them to Rigby Road ( Princess Street) in the early days and combined it with BFC.Would watch the Boro who would usually kick off early especially in the winter months( no floodlights) and then wander across to BR ( gates opened up after half time for free)where it was usually the Reserves playing ( to avoid clashing). We would wait for the score to be put up on the board where the small stand was in the corner of the South with the first team score when playing away.
Became hooked more on the football than the Rugby so when a choice had to be made it became BFC.Always had a soft spot for the Borough though once they moved out of town to Wigan that was really the end of it.

I sold programmes there, probably around 1964, and occasionally operated the scoreboard.

Then no doubt we may well have bumped into each other there as our small group of young lads would normally be below the scoreboard.
i know when we were at the old ground we did the scoreboard there which seemed miles from the pitch with the greyhound track surrounding it.Keeping score was pretty hard when the likes of Wigan and St.Helens were in town as they usually trounced us😉.

The first Blackpool Borough game I went to Borough beat Huyton . I used to go occasionally in those days when the possession rules were different and the top sides seemed to keep the ball 90 per cent of the time. Borough were perennial strugglers though they did find a gem of a player in Tommy Bishop who went on to become a RL legend.

What a pathetic response , grow up you moron
Well you build your statue to home - he bankrupted us and got us relegated

and more or less did the same to every team he managed - he was the worst manger in his era !

that’s a statue I would not acknowledge - he had a bigger head than Brian Clough who was a manager and man of note (in comparison)

I think that’s not a moronic argument and if it is please suggest why ?

He was a World Cup winner , a Blackpool legend as a player ,not many world cup winners turned out to be brilliant managers .
However you have your own opinion , fair enough , no matter how strange that is.

yes...a definite legend...and about the 90%😉

Especially because there's nothing there now.

Yes the slope of green grass is impressive.
It’s a travesty what happened there, it at the time was a world class venue, was it owned by the council? Many a happy time spent there in my youth, get on the tram from Cleveleys , 25p at derby baths to get in, coke and a mars bar and back home
wonderful memories, then they built the slides, which were amazing as long as you didn’t mind nails in your back going down them!!!!

Message for Tony Green - Finally found the picture you will be pleased to see!

Stanley Harding Mortensen receives the Freedom of the Borough, Blackpool Town Hall 1990
You can edit out the convicted rapist lurking in the background😠
Tony Green, my biggest influence, teached me Maths at Millfield and football for a decade, A true legend.

25p!!!
I think it was about 6d when I first went. 😁

The schoolboy, Jimmy Clitheroe
No it's not Jimmy Clitheroe. Too tall and different facial features to Jimmy. I reckon it is Matthews son Stanley Junior who i have seen in a photo shoot done in the 50's at Matthews house on St. Annes Rd. It looks like the same kid.

It’s the 1967-68 kit and we didn't play Chelsea that season. I go for Birmingham City. Skirton pen for Blackpool in a 1-0 win September 1967.
The only season we wore that kit with 2 bands on the socks was 1968/69 according to 'historical football kits' site but no Chelsea that season and Blues wore Blue/Blue/White according to the same site. I don't have my Roy Calley book at work for me to see if we scored a pen. against them that season.

It lost its international status when swimming converted to metres. As I recall it was 50 yards long, not 50 metres and the depths were in feet as well. 16 feet at the diving board end.

Anyone remember there were windows in the sides of the pool underwater that you could look through?
