OLD PICTURES OF BLACKPOOL FC

The only season we wore that kit with 2 bands on the socks was 1968/69 according to 'historical football kits' site but no Chelsea that season and Blues wore Blue/Blue/White according to the same site. I don't have my Roy Calley book at work for me to see if we scored a pen. against them that season.
Carlisle?

Anybody remember the building next to the south stand ( where the casino is/was) it was I think a timber construction but seemed to be lined with Bally photos. Was it a supporters club of sorts, I can't remember.
Yes it was a cafe/coffee bar in a wooden structure, think it was called The Picador, some of the players used to go in, went in a couple of times myself in the early 60’s. Would be interested in any other memories of this establishment.

It lost its international status when swimming converted to metres. As I recall it was 50 yards long, not 50 metres and the depths were in feet as well. 16 feet at the diving board end.

Anyone remember there were windows in the sides of the pool underwater that you could look through?
If it were there today, the adjustments to metric would be made in a couple of weeks. That was either a myth or a convenient excuse.

It’s the 1967-68 kit and we did’nt play Chelsea that season. I go for Birmingham City. Skirton pen for Blackpool in a 1-0 win September 1967.
Ingram got the goal against Birmingham, it's Skirton scoring against Boro also in September that season.

It was 55 yards long, which is 50.3 metres, and as the 50 metres is between touch panels, not a problem. Problem might have been the width. Olympic standard width is 25 metres (10 lanes) . Derby pool was 55 feet, 8 lanes, 16.7 metres. Adding 9 metres to the width would have been a major problem.

Thanks Rook, didn't know about the width problem.

The place you describe which I remember from the early 60s was called Mandy’s Snack Bar, it wasn‘t owned by Mandy Hill who played for Blackpool at the time. Very popular with the Blackpool players, especially Alan Ball, after they had finished training, got many an autograph in there.

That’s it, Mandys! Any idea were I got Picador from? Lol.

Derby was a palace compared to Cocker St where my school booked swimming classes. What a crumbling Victorian dump.

No idea where you got the Picador name from but it is much better name than Mandy’s. The Owner’s nickname who served everybody was Mandy, I think he was Italian, he was certainly from a Med country. He loved it whenever the Blackpool players came in and always gave them a first class sevice. There is a great picture on Google of a young Alan Ball having a coffee in there.

i was doing some research last year and came across mentions of this gaff i had no idea of (it was before my time). the picador/mandy's sounds like it could have been the same place. i heard it was a coffee bar, blackpool's first 'beat club' (with strippers!) and open til 4am. maybe it then got a drinks licence. i'd also heard that johnny kidd (as in the pirates) had put money into it too. fascinating stuff. check the link below.

mandy's / picador

Yes Johnny Kidd played there as did a few other groups in the early 60's. I think it was behind the old no.1 club / casino.

This article mentions a Picador Club on Bloomfield Road, so you're right that there was one. It's strange how memory works - the right answer, but in the wrong order 🤣

Cheers Grumpy, it’s imperative we get this sort of thing sorted at our age lol! I’ve found this on Facebook08F57EC5-DB78-4A0B-BCC4-AFA03E8B0470.jpegSo reckon the Picador was at the back of Mandys(long gone) and Picador is a garage I think now. Remember seeing Johnny Kidd & Pirates and Dave Berry and the Rockin’ Vicars at Sands Casino on Hawes Side Lane late 60’s, it’s all coming back to me now… I think!

Yep, the Frankitts who owned the Picador (and also manufactured ice cream) one of them did go into used car sales, probably the same building when the nightclub folded ?

Dave Tong. Is he still a taxi driver in Blackpool? Played against him years ago when he was a lad at Evington FC.
Played for Evington 1967-69 think Dave Tong joined after that still got my league and league cup winners medals for the 67/68 season

My brother used to shine the lights on the strippers at the Picador - always late out of bed to open our Fish & Chip shop on Central Drive where the Bus stop is about 50 feet from Bloomers / Central lights - I used to sell Ice Cream for Mandy on Lytham Road
