Stoke City 0, Blackpool 1

Stoke top of the table unbeaten at home in 17 with 14 wins.

Blackpool 2 away wins all season.

Neil Bailey playing.

Last minute Trevor Sinclair is put through one on one against Bruce Grobbelaar and the rest is history.

Their fans voted that goal the best celebrated at the Victoria Ground that season.

Definitely in my top 10 for away games.

Remember the Stoke fans throwing coins at the Blackpool fans afterwards, which was the cause of the Staffordshire recession.

Table before the game.

I had a newspaper cutting on my wall that said 'Super Surfing Seasiders Sink Sorry Stoke' for years from that game

Bailey and Briggs were brilliant that day. I think Bailey was the youth coach (?)
As you say, one of the best away games in my experience. We were in danger of relegation, but the 1-0 win (89th minute winner) helped keep us up.
Preston played there a couple of weeks later and lost 1-0 - didn't they go down that year?
Glad the coins all missed us though - we were standing on the Blackpool right near the Stoke penalty area - probably about 1200 of us from memory?

I was at that game in the Stoke end behind the goal where Tricky Trev scored having gone as a guest of a Stokie . I have never none celebrated a goal like that in my life . Until I got back in the car that is !

I have a certain admiration for Stoke , the grit of them.
But yeah , great result, wasn’t at the game.

yep , my first visit to the Victoria Ground.
Sat in the seats by the corner flag. They lobbed loads of coins.

Trev nearly lobbed Grobbelaar from 40+ yards in the first half.

Our end went mental when Trev scored in the last minute. Shame the turnout was affected by Stoke's off field behaviour in the weeks prior.

I was 11 years old. A proper smash and grab with a real feeling of danger about it all. We were locked in for a bit after the game too.

Absolutely 100% one of my favourite ever games as a Seasider!

One of my favourite ever away games too. On paper we had no chance. I remember the ball seeming to take an age to hit the net. I was beaming all the way back to Birmingham where I was in my first year at Uni.

Ayre - from memory I wouldn't call it a traditional smash and grab (al a 1-0 against Billy Davis's Forest in the league game at Forest years later)
We looked composed and comfortable with Bailey and Briggs handling almost everything.
The ball broke to Trev , he nut-megged their centre backs (who were playing very high line at the half way line) and had clear run to Grobbelaar who came out of his goal as usual. The ball seemed to take an age to roll into the corner (as already posted).
Brilliant ending to a brilliant game

One of my favourite memories of following Blackpool too. I was in the seats in the corner. Stoke had battered us all game until Trev scored the winner. Went mental and then the game was over. The Stokies were not a happy bunch and proceeded to pelt us with coins. I was cut on the head & scrambled over the seats to get away. An officer told me to return to my seat & my reply wasn't polite. Mounted police were needed to clear them & the journey back to the car was lively.

My Dad is from Stoke & a massive fan. He was in the executive boxes with my bro. My bro decided to treat him after the home game in the previous November. We had taken him into the South Stand and Stoke were everywhere. A group of four sat immediately behind us were sussed and pulled up their shirts to reveal Stoke tops & a ton of Stoke tattoos, egging the Pool fans on. My dad grabbed the biggest by the throat and told him to fuck off away, as he was frightening a kid on our row. I thought I was in for a proper punch up, but the Stokies apologised before running straight into Q Block's finest. They didn't last long, but fair play for their boldness.

That was one of my favourite away days - not only did they throw coins there was a shoe and a pie thrown! We were kept in for ages. I know some people were saying they have videos of old goals/games - would love to experience that game again. Nice one Southport 👍

Trev’s goal was on a video tape of his playing highlights that the club put together when there was a lot of interest in him from other clubs. It was used to show his skills and set to tunes like ‘Simply the Best’. I got a copy and dug it out hoping to digitise it but it had degraded and was unplayable...much like TT at times.

My most distinct memory of the tape was a goal he got at Brighton when they had their deck chair shirts: it was unbelievable.

Been discussed a fair bit on the old AVFTT. I'm with Dave62 in that it was far from a smash and grab.

I thought we played really well that day and as the away team near the bottom of the league we raised our game. Don't think they hammered us at all.
