Oxford United v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 21.10.23

Keep them at arms length first half (which we did - they scored a good goal) and then turn the screw last 30. 1-1 away to a team that has won 9 in 11 and are bang in form is a great result. Oxford sat back last 20 minutes hence why we had the lions share of the ball. They would not have done earlier on. Great point and on to Tuesday

I reckon Dale and CJ as wing-backs are starting to work. Both were mixed today but still carried a threat. CJ is surely the most improved player in the squad and starting to have the confidence he needs - good on him. We missed Norburn. Carey not so good. Even Shayne did well. It's a marathon not a sprint. Onward and upward.

You’d hope as the games go on, we’re more and more on the front foot against any team as we were the last 20 minutes. If we can do it away at a top team, we can do it against anyone. C’mon Neil, let the shackles off!
Brilliant away point - we’re definitely building now 👍🍊
Agreed, I was calling for a bit of swagger and arrogance before a ball was kicked this season. I think we’ve shown enough now to be showing up anywhere with a belief that we can win any game.

Critchley is a bit too cautious but as you say let’s hope he adoptes a more confident approach in the future.

No issue with the first half and keeping things right away from home. If we pick up good away points like today and win the vast majority of home games we’ll be near the top at the end of the season.
As you say, particularly at home, play with confidence and go after teams.

It doesn't. Feels like two points dropped in a way. We would have won that maybe if we actually showed some attacking in the first 70 mins.

Certainly didn't for us fans in the away end today. Brilliant in the last 20 and great scenes when we scored (and subsequently could have nicked it).

Fairly even apart from one good move by them. We weren't at it in the first half but Rhodes could have had 3 today.

Onwards!

I’ve just watched the whole game on a flight over to America, I’ve got noise cancelling headphones on and I must have cheered louder than I thought when that Rhodes goal went in…. I looked up to see people staring at me thinking wtf 😂
When you land, please tell them it's Football NOT Soccer

Oh I can imagine. That last 20 mins would have masked over the inept first 60 or so minutes. Irrespective of what happened prior, you can't beat a last minute equaliser.

After the first 60 minutes, I didn't the team were capable but fair play to the players who came on. It lifted the other players who then also went into another gear.

Great point, but I wish we hadn't waited until the last 10 mins to really go for it. We look so much better when we play on the front foot and take the game to the opposition. Dembele is a must start on Tuesday.

I can’t say I found the first half or the first 60 frustrating. It was just a case of two sides cancelling each other out.

You don’t just come away to a side second in the league and shoot your load in the first 20 minutes.

This is professional football, not Sunday League.
We couldn’t put a few passes together in what the part of the first half I managed to stay awake. Their goal was the only bit of slick passing I saw. Pleased we got a point of course shame we didn’t go for it earlier.

What a load of bollocks

You’d think the senior players would be saying to Critchley, we think we could have won this if we’d gone for it a bit earlier.

Maybe mates, but I reckon Oxford’s plan was to wait for us to do so then try and catch us short at the back on the break. We were patient and took our final chance.

Lavery sub over Dembele offered a bit more muscle for me. I’m more pleased than disappointed today.

Yep Oxford are up there with the best sides and tbh they created very little.

We didn't get going until later on but when we did we could have scored a few.

Take the point considering and how we started, but nothing to fear in this league.

Why Dembele doesn’t start in front of Carey is a mystery
One point he is not the best tackler so can’t track back, 2nd point he was used as a super sub at his last club so He’s not yet match fit for 90 mins. It’s coming though and what a difference his Messi esque passes will make

I have just watched the extended highlights and cannot understand why the ref didn't give a penalty for the assault in the box on Lavery. Unbelievable. Even the one card that was shown seemed to me to be a 50/50 ball and little contact. I Heard the TTV coverage of the whole game yesterday and both commentators were scathing of the referees performance. Where do thy find these clowns?

When you consider we had 5 yellow cards and therefore had five players walking tightropes , that was a great result and makes up somewhat for the late draw at the Valley.

had a massive FIFTY pence on a draw . return of 1.65. Just stay unbeaten as long as possible . the next two are definite six points. Will be at the Peterborough game with my son. utmp.

You've got to say that was a great goal, Morgan picking out the run from Hubby and then Rhodes getting in front of his marker to steer his header wide of the goalkeeper. I don't know if Oxford had players missing or were still under the weather but they didn't look anything special and I think we will get better as the season progresses. We've got to find a way of keeping Rhodes he could be the difference!
