Pele

The first worldwide football icon. A little before my time but the 1970 world cup footage is there for all to see.

RIP to a truly wonderful footballer and by all accounts a very decent human being.
The 1970 World Cup was the first WC I remember, but I was just a bit too young to appreciate him legendary Brazil team properly.
But the footage is there for all to see. 3 world cups, the first one at just 17. A true legend.

RIP to the first superstar footballer I remember. Much more modest than those who followed, more in common with Sir Jim and Sir Stan than those who came later.

A sad day for all true football supporters. I had the great fortune to watch him in the 1966 and 1970 World Cups. A different type of player to both Messi and Maradonna. Pele was a striker pure and simple but from what I saw a kind and humble man.

Grainy black and white newsreel footage of Pele in the 1962 WC first started my fascination in this incredibly exciting footballer. I was 10 years old and collected everything associated with him from footy mags, and made a ‘scrap book’ with them. Always remember headlines in the soccer annuals such as ‘The black pearl’ The ‘Sun God’. Told my Dad I wanted to play for Santos and England when I was older. He was hacked to bits in the 66 WC, then triumphed in the 70 WC in that brilliant Brazil side. Great memories of a true footballing legend.

Well put Al they also captured my imagination has a youngster and it was there style of play that ignited my love for football.
We were fortunate to see him live on the t,v. and 1970 will always bring back happy memories of the great Pele and that team,

A different type of player in that he could use his right and left equally as well, plus a great header of the ball.

Both Messi and Maradona are and were very left footed.
