People in Portugal moaning about it now being in amber

Thick as mince for me. It’s hardly a surprise is it? The situation is changing weekly and in different countries or regions.

If you travel abroad for work or pleasure, there is always a risk of this happening. Do it with open eyes but know the risk and then don’t complain when the risk occurs.
Buyer beware and all that.

We’re all desperate for a sunshine break but did they really need to go so quickly. Daft.

Madness to go abroad with all this uncertainty
I have very little sympathy
That said apparently the airport testing revealed only 6 positive tests out of 100k taken and the Portuguese increase was centred on Lisbon so it does seem strange they didn't give a longer warning period - compare and contrast with India

No forthcoming trade deal with Portugal as we said at the time. Following the science, my arse...

Should’ve just gone Bolton or Blackburn with Darwen, it’s been sunny there and there’s no travel restrictions.

Kent ( my holiday destination ) was cracking the flags last week

Had a great holiday

Obviously you can't guarantee the weather but Whit week is normally pretty reliable

Thought last weekend when Manchester Airport seemed a heck of lot busier than it has been( anything flying due South taking off towards Stockport invariably flies almost over the top of the house sometimes and always nearby so it was very very noticeable) that they were no doubt off to the Algave or Madeira and thought this decision could easily backfire and as said it was not as if they weren’t aware things could easily change....so not much sympathy from me either as they must have known they were taking a chance.

ok ....some of the flights on Friday and Saturday were probably off to Porto to watch City but they were almost certainly going to return within a few hours not a holiday week or fortnight so little chance of being as affected.

At least they've saved a few quid in fines for taking the little darlings out of school.

Yep thick as mince
We love our holidays have at least 2 proper holidays abroad each year and two mini ones 4/5 nights abroad
Missing my hols since January 2020. Not booking anything at all this year but will probably book may next year nearer the time depending on the covid situation

Some people now just want to believe it's all over whether it is or isn't.
And who can blame them really. I think a lot of us feel like that - especially if we've been double vaccinated. Human nature. And personally, I praise them for that attitude rather than the "My life is in ruins, it'll never be like it was before" brigade. Even if life doesn't ever return totally to the previous "normal", it'll still be a hell of a lot better for the vast majority of people in the UK than it would have been for 99% of human history on Earth. Think about that for a minute everyone 🙂

Unfortunately, a thread like this always encourages vitriol and a smug sense of "Well, I made the correct decision in not going abroad just yet didn't I"...
At the end of the day, some of the recent Portugal visitors have been lucky, some not. It was a gamble. They knew it. We all knew it - but have a bit of sympathy for those who gambled and lost - even if you didn't, I say 👍

Add to that the profiteering by the staycation vendors.

My 3 weeks in Mexico is now a week in Wales later this month @ 1,160 for the week for 2 of us. Self catering one bed chalet. 😬

We usually go abroad a couple of times a year but won’t be this year. We’ll be staying at home and I mean home . We won’t be holidaying in rip off Britain.

Same here OL, my overseas holiday funding has been spent on season tickets and will be used for overnight stays for next seasons away matches. Roll on 24th June when the fixtures are out so l can start booking hotels.

Just checking out a work / pleasure week in Cornwall and Somerset in early July when schools are still open and no hols
I am genuinely stunned by the hotel prices - I know I can put against expenses but they’re 4 times higher than in 2019 and that’s non peak.
I get they need to claw back the cash but jeez that stings

I had a drive up to the trough of Bowland and then on to beacon fell Sunday. Lovely little break and non of this traffic light and testing nonce sense
We went up Nicky Nook and a wander past the reservoir last week, bloody heaving.

The next day we had a stroll up Arnside Knott and it was empty.

What pisses me off is the term staycation when in fact you're holidaying in the UK. A staycation is staying at home and having days out.

No sympathy from me, they knew green could change to amber while they were away, so “furious” as some have apparently said at the change doesn’t cut it.

They made a decision on the green light, it back fired on them unfortunately.
I’d not call them selfish though, they were told Portugal was good.
I have sympathy for them and understand why there winging over cost to get back.
It is what it is most people would moan if you have to shell out another £500 to get home.

These cocks charging the earth for holidaying in the uk are bad uns.
Yeh, they've lost money during the pandemic but Joe public haven't made any more more money in that time. Whether on furlough or still in employment they haven't got the money these B&Bs hotels etc are now charging.

A self catering chalet in Cornwall for a week before the pandemic was £800, the same chalet now is the thick end of £1300. When the owner rang my workmate to ask if he was going this year, as he had for the last 5 years, he told him to shove it.

A slight increase you can understand but they're taking the piss😡

Hence why I won’t holiday in the UK. I’ll wait.

Not all UK accommodation is taking the piss just paid for Cornwall in September no increase and was in Scotland bank Holiday(reebooked October)the same.

I've four golf trips booked so far ranging from 5 days to 2.

There are some really cheap deals hotel wise if you look out for them and book early.
